Tips and tricks and info about de-clawing options
Some cats will hate these more than others... And yeah, many will chew them off right away.... but diligence is key in the beginning: If your cat has half a brain then simply checking EVERY day after application and replacing any chewed off caps will cause the cat to eventually realize that this is a fight it simply will not win and *it will stop chewing the off* (again assuming it has a minimum level of intelligence ;-). Also, the caps do NOT go all the way to the soft toe... doing this will cause the cap to get glued to the skin and that will be VERY painful as the nail grows... Oftentimes I find that I need to cut the cap shorter to prevent this from happening. As for having to hold the cap for 5 minutes (as some reviews state), this is incorrect. Instead you need to apply the glue inside the cap (four or five of them at a time) and wait if necessary for the glue to begin to tack. Too much glue makes this whole process worse... you need only the a little glue... it is an art to find the right amount and wait time before applying, but a few tries and you will get it. Often the process of filling 5 caps takes long enough for the glue to tack, but if you have really steady hands and great eyesight then you may simply be filling the so fast that the glue needs an extra minute or two to tack (before attempting to apply it). When the final tow is complete you need to simply pet the cat for 5 minutes. TIP: If you find it trying to chew the tips right away take some hairball medicine or some other sticky substance the cat enjoys and spread a little on the cats BACK paws... it will then spend 5 minutes licking the back paw and that will give the glue time to set further. Again, check each day and re-apply any missing caps RIGHT AWAY... it is a war of persistence and if you are diligent your cat will accept the caps within a week or two. (Yeah you'll go thru alot of them initially but once the cat gives up a single set off ten can last for MONTHS... and with 40 in a pack, you have plenty to get past the adoption period). One last thought about de-clawing: Many people feel that de-clawing is cruel, but please remember that there are TWO methods for de-clawing a cat and one is FAR more preferable than the other. The common method (call it method 1) is to cut the entire tip of the tow off (imagine someone cutting of your finger from the last knuckle.... OUCH!). This method takes well over 4 weeks of recovery and is prone to infection (from cat liter). The second (less common, but more expensive method) is done via a laser an simply kills the root of the nail and then only the nail is removed (yeah, still traumatic but far less so than method one). The recovery time for the laser version is only about 7 to 10 days and far less prone to infection. However, please be aware that there is a small chance that the whole root may not have been removed for a given toe (in which case the procedure must be repeated for that toe). The vet should cover the cost if a followup procedure is needed, but discuss this before the initial procedure and at least expect to get a significant discount in that instance. (It is not common, but it does happen). The difference in cost between the two methods is approx. $100 more for the laser method (and is well worth it in my opinion). The hard part is finding a vet that offers the laser service. But the more people ask for it, the more likely a given vet will be inclined to get the training and equipment to offer the less traumatic laser surgery method... so call around and ASK local vets... (consider it a way to help cats worldwide ;-) Lastly, if going the de-clawing route, make sure to decide as early as possible. Losing claws later in life is far more psychologically traumatic for a cat than losing them early in life. (Many vets will not even perform the surgery on older cats for this very reason). In summary these caps are very useful, but it is important to check the caps daily and to only apply to the very tip. Also watch for claws (often the thumb) that may grow so long that the added length of the cap causing the cap/nail to grow 180 degrees in which case the cap start to dig into the cats paw. If this looks like it is starting to happen make sure to clip the cap end off and wait for the rest of the cap to fall off over time (then make sure to use a smaller tip next time on that toe). This is rare but it can happen if along cap is used on an untrimmed (long) nail.

Will they work long term? Will they stay on?
The sizing and glue issues are what dropped two stars on this rating. I purchased Soft Claws kitten size, which includes kitten and small size caps in the package. I also had previously purchased Soft Claws small caps in a local store, and I purchased a cheapo variety from Amazon called Dadiii. Overall I like the caps while they are on our kitten and not falling off. Hightlights and Comparisons: Soft Claws Kitten / Small size: $15-16 for 20 Kitten caps and 20 Small caps OR $13 for 40 small size caps with CLS Includes dried out glue (see reviews) All caps (kitten and small) seem to be the same size. The caps that are slightly bigger in the kitten pack seem to be the biggest out of both packages but appear to have no CLS*. The "Cheapo" variety (I bought Dadiii) $10-12 for 120 Nail caps Glue WORKED No CLS* If you want more wordy info: *CLS, or Cleat Lock System, defines the interior of each cap, which has a step design to keep the cap from falling off as easily. The step design also holds glue well and seems to aide in holding the cap to the cat's nail. I haven't seen this design idea with anybody other than Soft Claws ( I did look) The Kitten size arrived later than the Small size variety, since I picked up the size Small at a local store. I was very disappointed in the Kitten size - it looks EXACTLY the same in sizing (width, length, and diameter intended for the nail). I can see no difference. In fact, the kitten sized nail caps included both kitten and small sizing (assuming you wouldn't need kitten size caps for long I guess). The size smalls included with the kitten pack were very slightly bigger than the other size smalls I had previously purchased. I was also VERY displeased to note that the kitten/small caps package did not include their Cleat Lock System (CLS) on what I assume is supposed to be the size small caps. So CLS for kittens, but not for small cats? My other pack of Soft Claws included ALL CLS style caps. I'm confused why this was changed with the kitten package. The ones without CLS look super cheap (I did better with the cheapo package I bought) I can only conclude that Soft Claws is phasing out their kitten caps and working on S, M, and L only. But I am very displeased at having spent extra just to get the smaller caps, hoping they would fit better and stay on better. The kitten caps were more expensive, and I already had the other size, so I felt like I wasted money on this. A chart of the TRUE sizes would have been beneficial. Also, I cannot get these to stay on my cat. Granted, she is persistence itself - she gets many off in the first night after an evening application. She worries them and chews them and can't leave them alone -- so I can assume I will have to continue applying them until she gets used to them. I may also have to trim the caps to make them a little shorter (maybe more comfortable?). Perhaps they won't stay on due to the glue - the first pack I used, I didn't know what to expect. The glue was incredibly difficult to get out (it was partially dried out I later realized). The cheapo pack included glue, so when it came in, I grabbed their glue and tried to apply the missing caps to my kitten. Marvelous. it worked. This glue smells like super glue. I will have to look it up and see if it is the same. Since the cheapo pack included many more nail caps, and fresh glue that worked and wasn't dried out (many other reviewers have complained of this) then I can say that Soft Claws' glue has issues. The first application might've gone better if the glue had worked and not taught my kitten that she could get these off. More caps stayed on with my second application with fresh glue. Application wasn't too hard, all things considered - I have been working with our kitten to be handled and have her nails filed since we got her. We still had to use a towel- she doesn't like the feeling of these caps beeing pressed on the end of her nails. She was pretty calm through trimming her nails, etc until we started pressing nails on. All of these annoyances stated: these caps are marvelous while they are on. Nobody gets scratched, it is training the cat not to scratch us, the furniture, or use her nails to climb furniture or mattresses. I love the training element and I love not getting scratched. The cat is young, perhaps she will grow out of some of the problems we've had with her claws, since most of the issue is playtime (or the cat imagines it's playtime). But if these caps don't start shaping up, I have wasted about $40 on various types. They better work long term... if they do I will love them. If they don't I will be angry at money and time wasted...
