Nice book ends
It should be known the figure just out of view on the right in the product photo is also a female and not in fact a male. bummer.

Playful and unusual set of bookends, very well detailed.
I love this unusual set of bookends. The set depicts a pair of children playing hide and seek, one hiding, one seeking. They are nicely detailed, from the hair styles right down to the toenails. I especially like the detailing of the eyes. The seeker's eyes are open, even the pupils are evident. The hider's eyes look different, even a little odd, depending on the angle, but head on you can see that her eyes are closed. Perfect! The bookends are made of crushed stone and resin, but you would never guess just by looking at them. They are finished in a bronze glaze, which gives the bookends the look of actual bronze. These are lighter in weight than bronze, but still heavy enough for each girl to hold up her end of a row of books. They look best with a row of books about a foot long or less. Toscano makes a wide array of stone and resin sculptures, in many sizes, from the adorable to the bizarre. They come at a price, but for me, this set of bookends was well worth it.

Adorable and nice weight
I’m surprised at the lower stars. The bookends I received look just like the photo and are so cute. Whimsical and sturdy.

Not strong enough
I thought these might be weighty enough to hold up books but they're really not. Maybe a few would work, but overall I'm disappointed.

ENDS IN THEMSELVES
Are these bookends really art deco? I’ll take the word of the experts for that, and it also perhaps explains the price-tags that I am currently seeing. Disregarding names and titles, what I find is a pair of brass-effect ends for a bookshelf, made from a combination of hardened resin plus ground stone, that I would have had difficulty valuing in the absence of such labels. They are not quite as heavy as pure metal would have been, and while they are not exactly fragile they are not as proof against chipping and cracks either. Bookends fall into both functional and ornamental categories. How these rate as ornaments I will not venture to say, but as useful small pieces of furniture I am finding them very handy in relieving the pressure on my book-storage shelving capacity. I am having to use yet another open-ended shelf for the purpose, and the new bookends are just right for the job, so far at least. I got them from the UK Vine, but I would certainly suggest that any purchaser acquiring them at market rate for their aesthetic value should first consider whether that really outweighs the price-premium over items that would do the job at least as well. They are also a new addition to a series of similar art deco products by an established firm, so there could be potential to attract collectors as well. I don’t collect this sort of art, and I have the pieces for their usefulness more or less to the exclusion of their putative artistic value. Taking all these factors together, I suppose I can stretch to four stars as a guide to future purchasers.

A Little Disappointing
I have some larger bronze-finished resin statues of a boy and girl playing that I love, so was immediately attracted to these bookends. Maybe if I didn't have the other, very detailed, statues I wouldn't be as critical of these, but I have to say that I'm a little disappointed. These bookends appear to be made well and have a cute design with the little girls peeking and hiding in their individual poses. The only really detailed areas are their faces, which makes their bodies look a bit stiff and robot-like to me ( think Orson Wells here). I think that the shadowing and lighting make them look better in Amazon's picture than they actually look in person. This said, they may be perfect for a special spot in your little girl's room or somewhere else in your home, and you may just love them, but I think that they need a bit more detail and/or contrast. That's the thing about art. It's entirely personal. There's nothing wrong with these bookends. I just can't get excited about them. If I'd seen them in person at the current price of around $50, I would have passed them by. They were packed carefully and arrived undamaged.

Attractive, Playful and Thoughtful
I got these for my fireplace mantel. They are lighter than expected and so I cannot use them for more than decoration. I'll set a few books between them, but nothing heavy or large. The backs aren't perfectly perpendicular to the base. Visually, I only noticed when they were side-by-side. Otherwise, they are attractive, playful and thoughtful. --Brockeim

Cute little bookends.
These are very cute! The figures are young, so it is appropriate for kids' books as well as any other book. I actually have mine facing forward near my door to hold mail. Most mail is short enough that I can see the front of the forward facing one and the little face of the other. I don't really have figural sculptures around my house, they either seem tacky or their faces are off somehow unless they are more abstract. These are fine. They look bronze-ish, but are really some sort of resin that is plaster-like, I would recommend putting them somewhere where they would get knocked over, they would likely chip.

Not as described
First of all these are not brass, as described in the product heading. They are made of resin with a bronze finish and though weighty enough for bookends, they are not a heavy as the metal and care needs to be taken to avoid chipping. That said, they are cute and would be particularly pleasing for a child's book collection. The details on the subjects faces are cute so for some reason, their bodies to me look a little awkward. But would I pay £50+ for them? No.

these book ends are a nice weight. but am dissapointed by the lack of any detail..they say it's an art deco style..but i don't see that..the lil girls faces are blank and the outfit's have no detail either. not very happy with them.
