Nice Watch (try number 2)!
Update (July 5th, 2010 - back to 4 Stars): AMAZON rocks for fast turn around returns!!! Sent in the return notice to Amazon and received the replacement watch the next day. So far the new watch is performing well and I am very pleased with it. Each half wind still equals an hour to wind up and everything about it seems tighter. Time keeping is still good, has not stopped yet and I still like the watch! ---- Update (July 02, 2010 - dropped to 3 stars): Returning the watch. Maybe it was just mine, not sure since no one has posted other reviews. The watch just kept stopping, sometimes after a few hours, sometimes a few minutes. A watch that needs another watch so you can tell time is useless. Returning today for a replacement. Hope it is just this watch because it really is exactly what I was looking for in a pocket watch. ---- Update (July 01, 2010 - dropped to 4 stars, not quite perfect): I have used the watch for a little over a week now and still like the look and feel of it. There are some things that I have noticed: 1. Each half turn seems to equal about an hour of operation and I wind this every morning at around the same time and it takes about 24 half turns until I feel tension in the spring. The first time I wound it up it took about 40. 2. The watch has stopped twice for some reason. I am treating it like a $76 timepiece so I am not throwing it around or doing anything other than keeping it in my pocket until I want to know the time. Both times the watch was still wound pretty good (once after 17 hours of operation, the other around 7 - still with plenty of tension in the spring). I feel that a $76 timepiece should not stop within a week of ownership. If it happens much more then I will have to look at my alternatives. 3. No way to set the second hand. 4. It is keeping pretty good time with my other clocks ... whenever I reset it. 5. The covers are a little off. The front cover more so than the back. I can actually push it to the right a little and the cover pops open (I fixed this by sliding the lock a little since there is some space to do that). Not completely centered (nit-picky yes, but remember $76). If I wanted it to be poorly machined, I would have bought a "dollar watch". So, with everything said and done it retails for $114 (says so in the box). It is functioning pretty good and I still like it. I can deal with things being a little off (it is not really a high-end watch) and winding every day it is part of owning a mechanical timepiece, but if it keeps stopping then it is worthless. I will probably do one more update and it will say: "Still working!" or "Returned because it stopped working." ---- Original post (June 23, 2010): This pocket watch fit my needs perfectly. Just wanted to have one and it is nice to have the skeleton type just to see though it and see all the inner workings of a timepiece like this. I also have gotten use to not wearing a wrist watch so this is nice to have in my pocket (and I don't keep looking at my cell phone to get the time). Is it the best one out there? No, but for $76 it has a nice look and feel to it. Keeps good time and makes me want to check the clock more often. If you are just looking to get into pocket watches, perhaps a quartz or cheaper watch is a good start. It takes getting used to. You just can't flip your wrist over and check the time, instead you have to reach in your pocket and pull the watch out (plus the chain takes some getting used to as well) and either look through the little window (as this watch has) or open it and take a look. But if it is something you have always wanted then this is a nice watch to do that with. Image does not show it but it comes with a curb chain.

A little pricy for the internals it offers, but offers a good case and comes with good customer support
Like many other brand-new pocket watch fans (I would presume) I passed a watch kiosk at a mall that had a few simple mechanical watches that caught my eye (not CH, but the same basic idea). I did a little online research and chose the CH brand because their website was professional and their watches are very attractive to a new-comer's eye. I chose this particular model because I wanted a skeleton with an open back (double-hunter) and a windowed front (semi-hunter). After buying it, and continuing my research, I quickly learned how to recognize the most common watch movements. This one (and all of CH's lower-end watches, i.e., below $150) use the infamous Chinese 2650 movement. This movement is ubiquitous in watches below $50 and dominates the offerings below $100 (there are a few other movements in this range, but not many). In fact, watches with the 2650 movement can be had for as little as $10 on ebay or possibly at SteamPunk conferences in an economy bin or something like that...so by comparison, CH's are quite expensive. However, CH cases their watches very nicely. The case is tight, the hinges are tight -- overall the watch looks great so long as you don't aim a non-amateur gaze at the clearly recognizable 2650 (anyone you flash this watch at who doesn't know anything about watches is going to be super impressed). More seriously, the first watch I received started failing within about a month or two. It would simply stop running and the problem got worse. First it would run for a few hours, then a few minutes. It became totally unreliable. However, to CH's credit, they waived the stated required paid-return-shipping on the warranty and fixed the watch and shipped it back for free. I only had to pay for the shipping to send it to them. They said they lubricated the movement. Based on before/after hi-res photos of the surface grain in the satin finish I can verify they did in fact return the same watch I purchased; they didn't replace it...and it has work perfectly ever since, for several more months now. It is in my daily rotation of mechanical pocket watches and I trust it to work as well as my other watches, some of which have significantly higher quality parts. If you want a mechanical watch that tells time to reasonable accuracy and which will look slick to any nonwatch-afficionado who sees it, the CHs with 2650 movements aren't a bad choice at all. They cost more than watches with the same movement that you can grab on ebay or at SteamPunk conference in the economy bins, but I believe they are more solidly built and have much classier casing than the cheapo options...and they come with a warranty that actually paid off in my case...and I suppose they may use higher quality 2650 stock...I don't really know. I certainly think CH and similar brands offering similar watches are the best way to buy a cheap Chinese movement mechanical watch, better than getting one for $10-$20 that dies quickly and becomes jewelry. Despite the higher price over the cheaper options, you actually get a watch (and warranty) you can trust to work, which is to say you can actually use it as a watch!

This is the pocketwatch to get!
I absolutely love this pocketwatch! It's a beautiful design, it is functional, and after having it a week, the time has been dead on accurate. I find myself just holding the watch and looking at it at times because its design is so beautiful. I love the fact that with a small press of the button the front opens, and with a firm press, the back opens to reveal the inner workings. Even better, you don't have to open the casing at all to see the time because of the small window in front that reveals the clock hands. There are roman numerals also beautifully etched in the front design. If there is only one drawback is that you have to wind it every few days, so if you put it away for a while without use, it will stop... but I think that is pretty much standard for any mechanical pocket watch. The watch was well crafted and you can feel its sturdy design and high quality workmanship when you are holding it. I was deciding between getting this one or the Akribos XXIV, and I am very glad that I went with this watch. My friend has the Akribos and although it's a very neat design, it does not have the elegance and beauty that this one has. I really liked the kickstand feature on the Akribos for standing it up on your desk, but as it turns out, you can acheive that with this watch as well by opening both the front and back and standing it up. Also this watch has a lifetime warranty through Charles-Hubert, which I think is great. If you are wavering between which pocketwatch to get (as I was), you can rest assured that you will be happy by chosing this one. I fully researched pocketwatches before I bought and am very happy with my decision.
