Work & Fragile
We somehow broke the first one we bought. They work great but you have to be very careful with them they can easily break.

not the best I've used
It doesn't sit on the pot good so the temperature accuracy is poor. Do not suggest this purchase to anyone

Works as expected
I've used this thermometer only twice so far and it does the job. The dial type of candy thermometers that I used before require several inches of syrup depth in order for the thermometer to get a reading; their thermosensors were actually a couple inches above the tip of the probe. Since many candy recipes have only a few cups of sugar syrup being cooked, you'll need a good thermometer with the sensor at the tip. I checked the accuracy of the CDN candy thermometer with boiling water and it was accurate to within one or two degrees. Unlike other reviewers, I had no problem reading the numbers on the thermometer while it was hooked on the pot; there are settings for it to tilt back and forth. I agree with the other reviewers that you'll need a pot without a lip for the thermometer to stay put on the side. A straight sided pot is also better. I bought such a stainless steel 2 quart pot from Walmart for $30 and its perfect for most of those candy recipes. I read the complaint from other reviews about the lack of an off button. But fudge recipes require at least an hour to an hour and a half for the cool down to 110 degrees; this thermometer is meant to stay on in the pot to monitor this. It doesn't bother me that there is no alarm for the cool down. It will turn off automatically when the temperature stays below 104 degrees for one hour. I also like that you could set ANY target temperature and it would alert three degrees below; great for deep frying. It could also do a good job as a meat thermometer; the sensor at the tip makes it easier to place the probe right where you need it at the exact center of the food unlike other meat thermometers where the sensor is somewhere above the tip and you could get a false reading that the food is done. The only negative I see would be to find the replacement of the tiny batteries.

Great thermometer for deep frying
Used on Thanksgiving to deep fry a turkey. Works well, although wish the instruction manual was provided in the box (although quickly found the manual after a quick internet search). I compared this digital thermometer accuracy with a different analog thermometer and this digital thermometer seemed to be spot on for accuracy. My only minor complaints would be it would be nice if the display and temperature reading was larger so you could see from more than a few feet away and would prefer the probe to be slightly longer than the current ~8” length (would be nice if prove was near 10” length).

This is a replacement for a replacement
This is a replacement for a replacement. My wife washed one it died, not the thermometer's fault. The last one stopped working correctly so I purchased a new one. I mainly use it to make Ice Cream.

Worked great for 4 years, then quit
Bought in 2018 and used only 6-10 times at Xmas. My sample read 2 degrees low but was consistent. I always used the round heat shield. Worked great until this year when the display froze & buttons stopped working. Removing & re-installing the batteries didn't solve the problem. Re-ordering because it's the best candy thermometer I've found.

CDN DTC450 Candy Thermometer - A Keeper!
I finally decided to replace my "paddle" style candy thermometer that hasn't worked right from the get go. That one was difficult to read and inaccurate. It resulted in my first negative review of a product purchased on Amazon. I decided to go digital and ordered this one from Amazon. I received it on Friday Dec. 14, 2018 and sent it back on Friday Dec 14, 2018. I tried testing it in boiling water, which boils at 210F here in Phoenix. The thermometer readings/screen turned to all "8"s and then went black before it even reached 210F. So, back it went. I decided to re-order it and, I'm glad I did because this 2nd one works as expected. I first tested it in boiling water. Right on the money. I recommend knowing your boiling point where you live for greater accuracy. Today, I made a batch of pecan brittle and this thermometer was a joy to use. I preset it to the desired stage, the red light flashed and beeped when I was 3 degrees below my target temperature (250F). I then finished cooking it to the final stage (300F) and again, it was nice to easily read the temperature and also respond to the alarm's red light and beeps. I really like the alarm going off when the temperature is 3 degrees below the target temperature. There is such a range between what the temperatures for any stage when you're making candy. I make candy once a year, so I can only hope that this thermometer works next year. I'll test it in boiling water before using again. I ruined multiple batches of candy with my old paddle type because it was wildly inaccurate and the devil to read those little lines. I can't yet rate the durability of this CDN unit, but it is easy to set up and use, once you have the instructions. I printed out user instructions I found online because none came with the thermometer. It's not easy to clean, but no candy thermometer is. You just have to be careful and mindful to avoid getting anything other than the probe wet. What I don't like is that I can't manually turn this unit off. It stays on for an hour and shuts itself off if not in use. That drains the battery. Unlike other reviewers, I did not find the steam guard ring or the pan clip to be hard to install or use.

Not the greatest
This candy thermometer is working for me but I don’t think it is calibrated correctly my fudge usually turns out a bit crumbly which it never did before. Also it’s a little hard to read you have to tilt it sideways to see it and the alarm settings are hard to set. It usual goes off at a different temperature than I tried to set it for. I would not buy this again and I’m looking for something better.

why only 4 stars?
Thermometer works great. The part that clips onto the pot is kind of wobbly. No biggie. Just a surprise the first time I used it.

Can't fault it, seems solidly build and the temperature presets make life easy
I wanted a digital thermometer to experiment with making confectionery, and this has ticked all my boxes. -Construction The thermometer seems sturdy, I have used it a couple of times now and it can definitely stand the heat. As the clip is not fixed to the thermometer, it clips comfortably to any sized pan, and the guard provided keeps any splashes away from the electronics. -Preset Temperatures The thermometer is preset with the temperatures you want for working with sugar, and you can scroll through these by just pressing one button ('mode'). This makes life easy, no programming required and you don't have to remember the temperature of the stages (soft ball, hard ball, etc.). It starts to beep as the set temperature is reached, so you can take your eye off the gauge safely without burning the sugar. -Conclusion If you are looking for a reliable, well priced candy/sugar thermometer, this comes highly recommended! It did take a while to get here from America though, and the tracking number provided didn't work. This wasn't a problem for me, and it came within the (generous) time window given, but if you need something urgently then this might be worth bearing in mind.

Needs a few tweaks and would be just right!!!!!!
A very good thermometer if the parts it came with lasted. The thermometer itself is very good with an easy selection of the type of fudge, toffee etc you are making with a nice alert when it’s getting close to temperature and another when it reaches it. However the metal clip snapped within a month and the chrome protector which protects the thermometer from the heat will not stay in place without the clip. Also when the clip wasn’t broken still found it hard to keep it in a low enough position for it to keep the temperature gauge from touching the bottom of the pan.

Great product. No problems at all.
Did temperature test in boiling water. Temp set to 212. Warning went off as it should at 209 degrees. Mine does not screech loudly as another reviewer said and it flashes red light as it should. My sauce pan has a lip and the clamp held fast..no movement. Screen did not go black at this temperature (212). Haven't gone higher. Screen is small for those of us with not so good eye sight. I just turn this around so I can see the screen better. I think this works better in a little taller pan. TIP: If the probe slips in the holder just bend in the part underneath where the teeth are that holds the probe. It tightens it right back up. Then push the probe back in to the holder. Now it's nice and tight. Pulling the probe in and out when cooking/cleaning stretches the teeth part. Easy fix!!
