Good thermometer but don't put it in the dish

I am a professional and use this daily. I calibrated this a couple times.. works fine but I wish it were a bit more waterproof. Especially when the dishwasher keeps forgetting not to put in dishwater! I have water inside mine and its still pretty accurate. I make caramels and other sugar candies all the time and have been through a plethora of thermometers. I'm getting a second one of these and trying a waterproof one.. review to follow

A Real Candy Thermometer

I had previously bought a digital display thermometer. DO NOT buy any plastic, digital thermometers. They cannot withstand active heat, so when you are heating your candy in the pot on the stove they will start melting and shutting off and you can't attach it onto the pot. This thermometer is perfect for making candy. It goes past the 305ºF that you need for making hard candy. It doesn't roll around on your countertop as easily because of its interesting shape. It has an adjustable metal clip that you adjust by pinching it in so that the probe tip is right above the bottom of the pot. The clip fits great on the pot edge. Cleaned easily and only had to put it in a pot of very hot water for a little bit to get the hard candy residue off. I don't know what else you would want from a candy thermometer. I found this because of its very positive Amazon reviews. And, this is a case where I am very appreciative of Amazon's review system.

Easy to read!

The thermometer arrived promptly. My previous thermometer was a tube shaped glass one with tiny markings that inevitably became obscured by condensation as whatever I was cooking heated up. This one has large, clear markings on a dial that stays above and faces away from the rising the water vapor. The clip is not very strong, so the thermometer moves around a bit as you stir stuff, but my old glass one flipped around, too. I would definitely buy this again and I would recommend it to friends.

Can’t wait to try ...hoping it’s a good replacement for my last one that lasted for decades.

I would have given this 5 stars if I had used it, but this purchase was a replacement for a similar thermometer that I have used for years. This style is very difficult to find. Purchased a glass tube thermometer and first round of English Toffee and that one broke. I had to resort to old original thermometer ( which temp is off) after researching, I found this one.couldnt order it fast enough, I can’t wait for next holiday season. Hoping it works as well as original.

Excellent for making candy or taking food temperature.

I bought this so that I could make hand rolled taffy, as you have to heat your mixture to a certain degree and then mold it as it cools to get it to take a certain consistency. Good product for the price, and my taffy turned out tasty.

Very old school, very easy

What I like about this is simply the simple construction of it. Mostly metal, easy to read, and pretty accurate. Most of these thermometers these days have been over engineered and made out of frail materials. You have to be too careful with them and they are, in my opinion, a little over priced. Not worth the price tag on them. They are food thermometers, not full kitchen appliances. I like the brands that have been around for decades. Norpro has and I can see why.
