This little guy operates differently than rain chains with cups.
I used this rain chain to serve a roof with an area of 150 sf. I shortened the chain to about 5 ft., so splashover is not an issue. Surface tension against the leaves keeps the water against or near the chain. Leaf positioning is crucial for those wanting to keep splashover to a minimum.. all of my rain chains are copper, and they develop a nice patina in fairly short order. Here in New England, these chains will need to be removed temporarily to avoid icing damage. Update after one year of service: the rings to which the pairs of brass leaves are attached benefit IMO with being squeezed a bit to make them slightly oval instead of completely round. With that, the leaves hang more naturally and are less likely to splash or scatter rain runoff more broadly. To me, that's a plus.

It came the next day and I had ordered the 8.5' and the extra 3'. Surprising, they were both 8.5'. So, now I will use the extra length for another down. I also added a LED rope light along side of it. It looks great. Thursday's forecast calls for rain and I can't wait to see the effect.

Absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!!
When I first saw these I was skeptical because there were no great pictures of the quality and I didn’t want them to look cheap. Boy was I wrong! These things are gorgeous! Definitely worth the money! They are the perfect touch to make your porch stand out. We are receiving compliments on them all the time! Great buy!

A Beautiful Decorative Rainy Day Water Feature. Not a downspout replacement.
No one should ever buy a rain chain unless they know what it is and what it does. A rain chain does not replace a downspout. It is primarily a decorative item that provides a soothing effect while watching the rain dribble down the links--or, in this case, beautiful copper leaves. This "chain" requires a bit more attention than standard link chains in that the leaves must be kept as vertical as possible to avoid unwanted splashing. This is easily done during installation by simple centering the loops from which the leaves hang, and perhaps bending the tab on the leaf to assure it remains vertical. I strongly suggest purchasing theStanwood Rain Chain Copper Gutter Adaptor for Rain Chain Installation to assure that the flow of water draining from the area above your chain is captured as completely as possible and directed down the chain. For the most part, small chains like this will not be effective in a downpour and are meant to direct a light to medium flow of water. If your chain will be subject to affects of the wind, I would further recommend theStanwood Rain Chain Copper Basin Bowl for Rain Chain , which adds weight to the bottom of the chain and can also help to avoid erosion of the soil if that is a potential problem. Finally, if you are worried about returning defective or problematic merchandise, always look for "Ships from and sold by Amazon.com." I've never had a problem yet.

Very pretty and practical
I have two other copper rain chains that are more of the bucket style. As with a plain chain, expect more splash with this kind and place it accordingly. The leaves are very pretty and guide the water and make a pleasant sound. This chain is in a bushy area so the splashing is no issue. The copper takes awhile to change color and develop the patina and thats part of the pleasure of having it. I elected to use the copper gutter adapter with this one instead of the V hook it came with. Bought it "new-used" and the condition was perfect and enjoyed the discount.

This is very nice to look at but doesn’t really work as a rain chain. The water splashes everywhere off of the chain and doesn’t move downwards like a rain chain should channel the water. Not a replacement for a downspout at all
