Works well; not easy to install
This device can work well, but installing it was problematic until I modified the approach from that called for in the instructions. For one thing, it includes an installation template to be cut from the included instruction sheet. Those instructions are on very thin paper that is multiply folded, all of which makes for a floppy and inaccurate template. I recommend tracing it onto something firmer. More importantly, two pieces are called for to be installed: the piston onto the sliding door, which I'll call the "door mount," and a receiver strip to be fit within the door's track. The door mount installs fairly easily. On the other hand, I found exactly placing and installing the receiver to be very difficult. In the end, I installed two of these door guardians, abandoning the use of the receiver strips entirely, doing the following instead: 1) Within the door mount, the piston can be seated in different positions. I placed it at its most extended position. 2) With the piston retracted, I secured the door mount to the door using only the adjustable screw slots so the top of the retracted piston was ±3/32" (a bit less than 1/8") below the door track. Once I was satisfied that the door would then operate fully without interference, I added the two screws in the door mount's fixed-position holes. 3) With the door fully closed, I released the piston so it pressed up against the door track, and I marked that position with a pencil. 4) With the door opened 3", I repeated that, again marking where the piston met the door track. 5) I then removed the door mount entirely, and using the approximate centers of those two marked points of piston contact, I used a 5/8" bit (larger than what's called for in the instructions) to drill holes through the door track at those two points to a depth of 1/2"+. 6) I re-mounted the door mount. The guardian now works perfectly using the holes in the door track to either prevent the door from being opened or to hold it open at 3".

Best patio door lock I've found
Well built, easy to install, looks good. Only thing to be aware of is accidentally locking yourself out.

Instructions poor but product apparently works as it should (First review)
I have a swimming pool, a temporary pool fence and don't normally have little kids around. I hate putting up the pool fence, plus my dogs damaged it some and it needs repairs. I have two mischievous toddler nieces coming this weekend and looking for a way to prevent them from getting into the backyard where the pool is. I looked at what Home Depot, Lowes and Babies 'R Us had locally and nothing really seemed quite right (solutions that may work for SOME sliding glass doors but not ours). This product looked promising so I ordered it for next day arrival here on Amazon. It arrived about 14 hours later. I read through all the instructions and got the gist of most of it. I cut out the template like it says and found the template to be ABSOLUTELY WORTHLESS! After a bit, I ended up throwing away all the instructions and making my own instructions. I put the pin in the bracket with the pin cover like the instructions mentioned, but slid the entire assembly up until the pin just touching the top of the door jam when pin extended fully. I then drilled wholes in the sliding door mid-way in each of the adjustable screw slots. I loosely put the "Keeper Plate" in position and drilled the screw holes. I then removed the bracket assembly as I put the long screws in to hold the Keeper Plate snugly to the top door track. I then placed the bracket in place and put short screws into the previously pre-drilled holes. I made tested the entire operation of the locking system before pre-drilling the remaining two non-adjustable screw points and putting in the remaining short screws. I put the screw cover plate on and so far, it seems to work well. Under normal circumstances, like all the "baby-proof" drawers and cupboard doors, the mechanism will be set to be out of the way... I pulled the pin down and twisted it. I can now open and shut the sliding glass door like before anything was done. I then pull and twist it and it will lock. I can open the door a couple inches and it will lock there, or pull again and open it all the way. In this position, I have to be careful myself when *I* go out that I understand the door can lock behind me if I shut the door. The big test will be this weekend when the nieces are here.

Toddler proof
I got this lock to keep my 3 year old from going outside on his own. It is definitely toddler proof as they aren't tall enough to reach it to unlock the door. Only downside is if you do go outside and shut the door, you are unable to get back in as it locks. Unless I installed it incorrectly.

No directions included
This lock seems to work great so far, but it did not come with any directions or template. It was not hard to install with the instructional video in the description. I am a little bit concerned with the plastic catch on top not being secure enough for intruders, but it will definitely work for a child. It looks really nice and the bolt is sturdy metal.

Spring action is useless and not strong enough! Very inconvenient
The product broke within first month. Spring loaded pull down function is annoying hard to hold and difficult to operate. It may be good for anyone who just want to close it and forget for long time but we open our door everyday for fresh air to get in. Every time you want to open, you have to pull it down and rotate it 90 degrees, hoping it would stay there and won't be pulled back by spring action. There is not enough grasp and you have to hope everytime that you are rotating it to get length. The spring broke on me when I pulled it down one day and its useless now. Waste of money!!

Does the trick!
I installed this with the purpose of keeping our 18 month old out of the backyard where our pool is. Install was quick and easy. Please make sure your door is compatible before driving holes in to the vinyl!

Great and easy to install.
Had to replace our old safety lock which broke. This was identical and husband installed in 10 minutes! Hopefully it lasts as long as our old one did, almost 10 years.
