Works well for Nest Home with legacy bell wiring

I used this to restore wiring that had been cut in my 1989 home. I was able to reuse the one pair of speaker wire that had been run for a Nutone intercom system. The device powers the Nest Home adequately. The Nest software says the device is receiving 17.9 volts, which is just in spec. My cable run is probably 25-30ft. The device *does* fit in an outlet junction box, but it's a tight fit. The junction box I was fitting it into had been spliced, too, so I had to deal with fitting two solid core mains cables and this device in one box. Rest assured, it can be done! The holes at the top/botom of the device can be used to sandwich it between the outlet box and a standard blank outlet faceplate, to good cosmetic effect. I also liked that the yellow 16 VAC wires can be run through a hole on the front and wired externally, as I don't like the idea of putting bell wires in a mains outlet box. Wiring everything in the drywall and running the low voltage wires between the outlet box and the faceplate seemed a lot safer.

Nice

Does what is says. Not for RING PRO DOORBELL, though. You need the 16 Volt, 30VA to power a chime and the camera. RING PRO literature finally list that you need a transformer with more Volt AMPS (WATTS) that just a 16 volt transformer with 20 VA.

Replacement Transformer for Ring Doorbell Pro

This transformer was purchased to replace my old one. I needed this in order to install a Ring Pro Doorbell. The voltage using the 16V terminals measured about 18.5V. I have read some concern from others that such a voltage exceeds the 16V so would be a problem. This is not the case. I have an electrical engineering background and the voltage measured at the transformer terminals without any load connected should read greater than the 16V specified. When a load is connected it will be reduced. Also, AC transformers have a tolerance associated with them so the voltage indicated is not exact. With variable voltage in your home the voltage at the transformer will also vary. I would estimate that any voltage from about 16.5V to 19.5V would be satisfactory and compatible with most mechanical doorbells and definitely the Ring Pro Doorbell. I choose this transformer for the 16V output as well as the current handling ability of 20VA (many other transformers only handle 10VA). I feel that a rating of 20VA is more appropriate for a mechanical doorbell used in conjunction with the Ring Doorbell Pro. Mine works great!

Compulsory re-purchase.

After less then a year the doorbell malfunctioned. I tested its low voltage output and the coil must have failed. Not sure why, heat was not an issue. There is no alternative to this unit. It’s not code to install inside of a gang box but it having its own enclosure works for me. I’ll be buying another and hope I get a winner this time. Coils have no moving parts and shouldn’t fail if properly installed and aren’t exposed to excessive heat.

It just works

This was the third transformer I tried for adding a new chime and video doorbell. I have learned the hard way that the stuff at the Home Repair big box stores is not any good. The original chime and transformer in our home was 10V and 5VA. The new chimes all say they need 16V and 10VA. Tried one from a large chain home repair store and it was buzzing like a wasp next even without the Video doorbell connected. Tried a second one and it buzzed and got VERY hot after the video doorbell was connected. This transformer worked perfectly. It is silent and runs at normal temps. Lesson learned- get more VA and a better transformer if you are adding a Video Doorbell or even just upgrading your chime.

I replaced a Nu Tone 16v 10va transformer with this one (16v 20va) and my Ring Video Pro doorbell finally works much better. If someone activates the doorbell the iPhone Ring app. opens immediately without a long delay. Even motion activation in front of the Ring doorbell has much improved with notices on the iPhone coming quicker. So if you have been on the phone with Ring customer service multiple times and seen very little performance improvement with all their suggestions (addition of a chime, poor wifi, replacing the unit, etc) I would recommend you get this stronger transformer. In fact, early on with my Ring research, there was no second guessing with needing a stronger transformer. For some reason, this thought has changed at Ring and the customer service people do not bring it up.

BIG Disappointment

I purchased a Ring doorbell cam (2020 Release) only to learn that the internal rechargeable battery doesn't last long and that the entire doorbell needs to be removed in order to recharge the device from the back. (Stupid engineering and no Ring warning!) Without existing doorbell wiring, I installed wiring and acquired a Broan-NuTone C915 Doorbell Transformer as my Ring doorbell cam can be powered from the back. The C915 transformer is recommended for my Ring model. After a simple installation and the powering of the transformer, about ten minutes later I was about 20-feet away when I heard an unusual pop sound. When I investigated, I immediately smelled a burning electrical odor. I de-energized the transformer which was EXTREMELY hot. The transformer had been properly wired and not enclosed. My Ring doorbell does not appear to have been damaged. The Broan-NuTone C915 Doorbell Transformer is being returned. My time and frustration uncompensated.

Great for Ring doorbell

Easy to install. I had a DC doorbell transformer and chime all in one unit installed in my new house which would not power my new ring doorbell. It was installed in a double gang box above the door. This was the only power transformer I could find that would go into the double gang box. I then had to also install a new AC doorbell to cover the box on the wall but it is very straightforward. Just be sure to shut off the breaker that powers your doorbell, you are working with 110v on the back side of this unit, and 16v on the chime side. Match the colored wires and follow the instructions that came with your doorbell.

Great option for different styles of installation.

We use these to install doorbells in locations where standard transformers are impractical. Pair them with a standard junction box and they work wonderfully.

It solved my issue with a video doorbell

I used it to upgrade from a 16VAC 10VA transformer with a Nutone Doorchime kit is being used with an RCA HSDB2 doorbell where the chime was not going off consistently and wasn't very loud. This transformer at 20VA provides enough power so that it works every time and the chime is now nice and loud. As a bonus, the new transformer fits exactly in the same spot as the old one. The new one is a little wider, but still fit perfectly.

Does not hum, easier more robust method of installation than big box store Healthkit version

Use this for a doorbell. Initially bought one at a big box store for 15 dollars less, and it hummed loudly enough to make anyone crazy. Read a review of this one from someone who had a similar experience. Took their advice and spent the extra 15 dollars. What a difference - totally silent. And as an added bonus it has a much more robust way of attaching to a box and porting the house voltage out of the box to it. Easier to install too. Good value.
