ONE OF THE BEST POWER TOOLS I OWN!
(Review for "Bosch 11255VSR BULLDOG Xtreme 1-Inch SDS-plus D-Handle Rotary Hammer", Purchased on Amazon June 2013.) 2-1/2 years later this tool has held up to the test of time, durability, and performance (and abuse!). It has so far easily chiseled through 600sqft of floor tile and thinset laid over concrete slab, broken apart portions of 4" concrete slab (after drilling holes into it first), and drilled many dozens of vertical holes into existing reinforced concrete foundation wall, ranging from 5/8" to 3/4" diameter holes down to 8" to 12" deep. As expected it has no problem with all of the various SDS-Plus bits and attachments, of which I have 6 different SDS-Plus concrete drilling bits, each 18" long, and 3 different chisel bits. The tool often gets covered in concrete dust after drilling yet does not impact performance and quick blast from an air compressors will easily clear the dust. I am impressed with its longterm durability, especially after weeks or sometimes months of no use while sitting in my toolboxes - it's been stored in my S.Texas garage or truck toolbox, exposed to S.Texas summer heat and humidity (but I've never allowed it to be directly exposed to wind-driven dirt, or to rain/water). I rarely use the case. [The case it ships with is terrific for storing the tool with its D-Handle and almost a dozen SDS-Plus bits (depending on length and tip), but it occupies too much space for my needs, and so it is stored in a mobile toolbox along with other power tools. The case is sturdy, of durable plastic, with good locking latches - I believe the case over time will not crack or become brittle as the plastic material appears to be the same as for other cases from Bosch, Dewalt, etc.] The metal bracket on the handle comes in extremely handy - pull the metal bracket out and the tool can be easily hung on any horizontal pipe, scaffold member, etc. - just like the Bosch Nail Guns. The tool's settings for forward-reverse (a slide switch) and for drill-combo-hammer (a dial) stays in place, and after more than a 100+ hours of (intermittent) use over 2-1/2 years, the dial and slide switch settings have never vibrated out of setting, unlike some other lesser (non-SDS) rotary hammers I've had. I have found that the reverse setting (counterclockwise rotation) is just as powerful as the forward (clockwise) rotation both in terms of speed and torque - an 18" long 3/4" diameter SDS-Plus drill bit will often get stuck on it's way to 8" to 12" deep, especially when it encounters rebar or some really hard stone aggregate...and as the tool description says, it disengages the torque when it detects the bit is stuck. Getting unstuck is as easy as throwing the hammer/drill into reverse. It almost instantly gets unstuck, ready to go at it again. The large red trigger (on/off) button on the handle has so far been great - I can fit 1-2 fingers to hold it down for those long drills into concrete (I have not complaints on the trigger-pull as I do on one of my handguns :)). The best part is that this trigger appears to accurately and proportionately control the variable speed rotation of the drill (in either forward or reverse) - you can go from zero to full speed rotation fast or control the drill/hammer speed as precisely as needed, which is fantastic when first starting off a drill bit. In my opinion, this SDS-Plus hammer-drill is powerful - with the right SDS-Plus concrete drill bit, most of the 8" to 12" deep holes in concrete take only several minutes. (IF you need a more powerful hammer-drill for concrete and hard stone, well...get the bigger cousin.) Bit changing is fantastic with the SDS-Plus format and the tool's quick-change chuck - the chuck is a solid design. Once the SDS-Plus bit is locked in, it doesn't come off or come loose, and the only times that it does is because the bit wasn't properly/fully inserted. The D-Handle is in my opinion adequately designed and does the job well - I've never removed it, always using the D-Handle on every use without a problem whatsoever. The only issue I have had is the depth gauge, but nothing worth dinging any stars from the core tool itself...whatever metal it's made of (aluminum?) is flimsy and it bends way too easily. Sure I can unbend it but it's a bother trying to really straighten it out. It is also short for my needs, although I think most users will be happy with it. [FYI - 18" long SDS-Plus drill bits have 4-6" of empty shank and the depth gauge is barely long enough when drilling down to only 6"-8". I have no comparisons to other hammer-drills of the SDS-Plus class so I do not have adequate perspective to share. I bought the tool based on the reviews on Amazon and research of SDS, SDS-Plus, and SDS-Max hammer drills. Even with my own [limited] abuse, I think this is one of the best quality, most powerful and most durable power tools I will ever own. In a few weeks, I'll be using this tool to pound 5/8" and 3/4" by 8 foot long ground rods into rocky soil...I have no hesitation that it'll do a great job fast.

BITS GET STUCK: BIG PRICE JUMP UP TO THE SDS MAX;
3 Stars instead of 5 because of the stuck-bit /clutch-slip problem and the fact that after about 2 1/2 years of only little use, the front part just stopped holding bits & fell out (tool receiver). I could not put it back in -- looks like it requires a press to reinstall. This Bulldog bites & won't let go! -- Rather, it gets bit and can't get loose! Right now I have stopped my concrete driveway drilling to hunt for a vicegrip because the bit is stuck and no shaking would make the bit come loose and this drill resume drilling. They should include a vicegrip with the drill! The Bulldog tends to jam the bit in concrete holes and then the slip-clutch refuses to turn the bit. So for me it had recurring STUCK BIT problem. Once the bit sticks, you can't force it out with drill power, either forward or reverse. I usually got the bit loose by wiggling the drill around until today. I've got to try a vice grip on the bit now. As a comparison, when I drilled with the Ryobi hammer drill (chuck key system) I don't recall ever having a bit so difficult to unstick, but the Ryobi could give you quite a kick with the drill spinning rather than the bit if you got a stuck bit. However, the quick insertion & quick release system on the SDS Plus may be a big time saver when you are progressively reaming the hole larger & larger with bigger bits. Yet if you follow the instructions to the letter, you would be lubricating the insertion end of your bit every time you put another bit into the jaw. That would be time consuming. As my Bulldog came packed with grease in the jaw, I did not do any additional lubrication during the couple of hours that I used the Bulldog one day. I just bought this (December, 2013) and used it to drill some holes in concrete. And at first I was satisfied with the performance using Bosch bits. It went pretty quick for 6 inches deep by starting with small bits and tapering up in size gradually, keeping the holes wet with water. Since the jaw is quick release and quick insert (instead of use a chuck key), it went pretty quick (I did not lube each bit on insertion.) One thing that slowed down the drilling was that bits frequently stuck in the holes with the Bulldog going into slip-clutch, not turning the bit. Then it was somewhat difficult to get the bit free. I found I was having to rev-up the Bulldog and enter the hole at high velocity to discourage the hole grabbing the bit with slip-clutch activation. The slip-clutch is a safety feature for not breaking your wrist or having your arm twisted or having the drill go around instead of the bit & whacking your nose or whatever. But it seems to me that it goes into slip-clutch too easily -- I am no Hercules or Popeye, but I could withstand more torque without the slip-clutch going into operation so easily. I did not find any way to adjust the slip-clutch in the instructions. I also did not see any speed / mechanical advantage adjustment. (If you could set the drill to have a slower speed but more torque due to geared mechanical advantage, could that not make the bit less likely to get stuck and your arm not getting as much backlash?) This hammer drill has 3 settings: 1) drill only, 2) hammer-only, 3) hammer-drill. From what I have read, the hammer-only is meant only for small, light chiseling, not heavy-duty bludgeoning. I found the hammer-only useful for chiseling a bit of week-old concrete. But for heavy-duty hammering, one is directed to the SDS Max, which has a different bit system (not compatible). SDS & SDS Plus are interchangeable as to bits. But SDS-Max is not compatible. Max uses a different insertion system. IMHO: After doing some searching: There does appear to be more accessories available for the SDS Max, which is also more powerful. I had preferred the Max, but the price jump is huge (unless you go to Harbor Freight & its brands, which I did not think of trying). So the Max was maxed out of my price range. The bits are expensive as sold by Bosch (or other name brands). However, I note now (after buying a large set of name brand bits) that Harbor Freight has SDS bits cheap. One doesn't expect high quality so incredibly cheap; but I think since they are so cheap, they are worth trying. I mean if you buy a set of SDS bits for $5, you won't cry if they are no good. Now I note that for about $190 Harbor Freight sells an SDS Max. I have no idea about the quality. But I think if I had it to do over, I would have tried the Harbor Freight SDS Max, though I do like my Bosch SDS Plus aside from the stuck bit routine. Incidentally, it appears that the SDS Max bits are more abundant and common than bits for the SDS Plus. There is commonly sold a converter attachment that let's one use SDS Plus bits in an SDS Max. But the only place I have seen a converter that lets one use Max bits in SDS-Plus is on Ebay. I presume that it is thought that a rugged Max bit for a Max use would not be appropriate in an SDS Plus, as not powerful enough a hammer. Perhaps if you try heavy chiseling or hammering with the SDS-Plus Bulldog, you will break the Bulldog? I think if you want to do much large hole drilling in concrete using a hole saw, you are likely to find better bits made for the SDS Max than for the SDS Plus. Then you might save time with the Max by using 1 hole saw in the Max, instead of 7 sizes of SDS Plus bits, reaming it wider & wider! I did try a couple of diamond hole-saw drill bits made for a chuck-key-jaw in a Ryobi hammer drill, but I found that slow go. As of now I have bought the over $40 chuck-key-jaw attachment for the SDS-Plus and found that it has a little learning curve. It came with an admonition to read the manual carefully first, but I found no manual with the attachment. BTW, I am a home-owner, not a professional concrete driller. The Beast
Bosch Bulldog Xtreme is so fun to use that you might ask your neighbors if they have any old tile they want to rip out. Fast and efficient! With that said, I must warn the cleanup will take hours to days, depending on your level of OCD (: I am a (Queenager) who had to fight with a 30-year-old male for my turn to use the tool.

Packs a punch, gets the job done
Bought this when my Ryobi hammer drill wasn't up to the task of drilling 1/2" anchor holes in concrete. With this drill it's no problem. You have to buy the special concrete bits for its chuck. I also bought the 3 jaw chuck attachment and it's been my go-to for hole sawing and boring wall stud penetrations. Only issue I've found is when boring larger than 1" holes the over-torque limiter sometimes kicks in. Wish there was a way to adjust that. But all in all very happy with it.

Ideal for drilling holes to break up concrete floor for a trench
This Bosch SDS Rotary hammer drill was just the tool needed to drill holes in my 3 inch concrete floor to create a one foot wide trench for new 4 inch PVC piping to a sewer connection. The tool driiled hundreds of 1/2" holes using a Bosch 1/2" carbide tip drill bit in about 30 seconds each. I drilled the holes 2 inches apart and then using a sledge I broke out sections I could carry in a bucket out of the basement. No messy dust from saws and jack hammers that I would have to rent costing more than this tool. The little pile of dust similar to an ant hill was sucked up by my shop vac. Sweeping would also work. This is a great tool.

Amazing
This drill is a beast! This was my first big name brand tool purchase, and I was hesitant it would do the job I needed drilling into solid granite. It has not disappointed me, it is well made, well worth the price, arrived sooner than expected, and this baby has drilled so many holes, I lost count. I feel very comfortable recommending this drill to others. One point I would like to make, to get the best out of the drill and bits, let the weight of the drill be all the pressure you apply, don't force, this drills solid granite without batting an eyelash, and barely breaks a sweat

Best investment!
I'm very happy with this tool. I purchased it to replace my corded hammer drill that's equipped with a regular Jacob's chuck. The Bosch rotary hammer drill is very easy to use. It is also much less tiring to use than my older corded hammer drill. It produces less vibrations and much less noise when drilling through concrete. Over the last few months, I have drilled hundreds of holes with this new tool and I have nothing bad to say about it. The carrying case is simple and well build (it's far from a pelican case, but it does the job). So far, the biggest holes I've drilled in concrete with this tool were 1/2"x8" for mechanical anchors. It felt like I was drilling through butter! I have also tried the hammer function to chip concrete around pipes going through floors. Again, this tool worked really well for that too. The trigger is sensitive enough to accurately control the chipping action blow by blow to not damage the pipes close to the chisel's tip.
