2" Makes a Big Difference
The over-sized seat is everything advertised. The seat is easy to install, sturdy, expensive, and comfortable. The oversized toilet seat has an 11" opening. An elongated open-front toilet seat has a 13" opening. If you need the extra space for wiping, purchase the elongated open-front seat.

Manufacturing defect
I originally purchased what I believe was this product in the early 2000's. It lasted 10-15 years. (I thought I recalled it being rated up to 500 lbs, so it may have been a different item.) When the hinges went bad, I couldn't find a name on it. So April of 2019, I did a search and purchase the bemis 1000CPT, as this product visually matched mine exactly. I noticed within a week it had a visible line on it, not really a crack. It's located on the top of the seat, opposite side of one of the four stoppers. Facing the commode, it is the left front. It wasn't rough or cracked, and the stoppers are molded in. I was going to send it back, but had already discarded the materials, and didn't like the idea of returning a used toilet seat, so I kept it. I started having problems with the hinges on this one also, where the metal tube that screws in slid out. I was able to reattach it, but the toilet seat was no longer coming down slowly, and when it came down rather forcefully this past week, it cracked all the way through on the top. I don't believe the crack extended to through the underside of the stopper. I purchased a replacement that came this past Saturday. I intended to inspect it before installing it, but it arrived while I was out, contents visible, so my brother opened it and installed it, and discarded the old seat. When I examined this one, it also has the same line, though it is much fainter. My brother could only see it when I pointed it out to him and agrees it is a manufacturing defect. The largest weight in the house is 400lbs, and it hadn't really been used, so I don't think it was caused by the household. I didn't register the one I purchased April 2019, as I didn't think I would have problems after the experience with the original, and I also haven't registered this one as my brother discarded the box and paperwork. I'm trying to decided if I'm going to request a replacement and send this seat back since I am still in the Amazon return policy. If this one behaves as the other one did, I don't think it will be an immediate issue, but I'd like the seat to last more than 2 years, considering it has a 5 year warranty. Reading through the reviews I see at least one other person has had the same issue, but I was hoping that since this was purchased so far apart, any defects would have been addressed by now.

Heavy Duty Toilet Seat
I ordered the Bemis 1000CP000 toilet seat after a bad experience with another name-brand seat I purchased at a local lumber yard for $22.95. (Most of the toilet seats at this business were priced at about $12.00 to about $18.95. The one I bought was the most expensive they had in stock!) I bought and installed the lumber yard seat on July 5th and it broke in two on July 10th! It was the first toilet seat that has ever broken completely in two. After that experience I went looking on the internet for a truly heavy duty seat that wouldn't break in 5 days and found the Bemis seat at Amazon. When I received the Bemis seat, the first thing I noticed was that it was much heavier than the broken seat. The next thing I noticed was that the attaching hardware was much heavier than the broken one. The broken seat attached with 1/2 inch threaded rods and plastic nuts, where the Bemis attached with 5/8 inch rods and similar 5/8 plastic nuts. The hinges appeared much larger and sturdier than the ones on the seat they were replacing and the part of the hinge which rested on the toilet had two sets of threaded holes for adjustment for either round or elongated toilets. The instructions didn't actually explain which to use, but it was obvious that the round bowl installation used the set of holes nearest to the seat and the elongated used the back set of holes. (Actually, after I got the seat installed, I noticed a little diagram with no explanation showing which sets of holes to use for each installation.) The underside of the Bemis seat has four "bumpers" or rests molded into it, unlike the broken seat which had only two in front. Once the seat was installed, it was evident that this is a somewhat larger seat than normal as it overhangs the toilet bowl about an inch-and-a-half on the sides and front. I believe one of the other reviewers said that this would fit anybody, and I believe that is correct, however, it does take a little getting used to in the beginning. To sum up, this Bemis toilet seat appears to be a big, sturdy, commercial quality seat with no noticeable flexing which is anchored very securely to the toilet bowl. I give it 5 stars! 8/29/2013 Update! I thought that this seat would be trouble-free, but, not so! After about three weeks of use the left side of the seat cover came loose. I thought it was broken, but after removing the seat assembly I discovered that two threaded, horizontal rods hold the seat cover in place. The left one was either completely backed out, or had never been properly run into place before it left the factory. (It's hard to believe that a threaded rod as long as this could have backed out in the first place, much less in three weeks time!) After a very laborious period of turning the rod back into place with needle-nosed pliers, (...there is no slot in the end of the threaded rod so you can use a screwdriver...) I got it back in place except for about an inch. So far, it seems okay, but it's pretty shoddy for a seat assembly that costs as much as this one!

Serves the purpose
Not bad. It did take some time to get used to as it is thinner than most seats so you sit a little lower than before. Not much lower, but I notice it. Also although thinner, it is wider than most seats, once again making for an adjustment period. The opening is also a little smaller. Not really complaints, just observations. I would recommend and would buy again if needed.

So far so good.
I weigh an ugly 240lbs (it's a US seat so I'm using US jargon!) and I went through the lid of the seat of my previous AKW toilet seat whilst sitting on it to dry my feet! I had to face the reality that a seat designed for the heavier person might be a good idea and I've always liked the idea of the Bemis Sta-Tight fixings. I had to search on their own website to find this one but found I could get it through Amazon imported to the UK from the US, and at a pretty reasonable price. I've just fixed it and all has gone swimmingly. I am now frightened to sit on it as I so don't want to be disappointed. Time will tell. I don't think it is a soft close as such but the closing is pretty stiff so it doesn't really slam down. Fingers crossed I don't have to update further with negative reports! Oh and I'm now on a diet too!!!
