Works fine overall. Worry about longevity of the plastic.
I paid about $8 for this red safety can opener by Zyliss sold by Amazon. Overall, it works fine but I am not sure how durable the plastic will be long term. The can opener isn't intuitive to use. If you look underneath you can see the 2 circular cogs that will do the cutting. If you spread the handles of the opener, you will see the space between the 2 cogs open up to 1/4 inch. The handles only spread apart about and inch so you might think it's stuck or broken. However, the 1/4 inch space between the 2 cogs is all you need. The can opener goes ontop of the can. The tricky part is to have the lip of the can go in between the 2 cogs underneath. You can't see it so it has to be done by "touch". You have to "feel" the lip getting caufht between the cogs. Once it's in place, you can close the handles to clamp the lip of the can in place. At this point you still have to grip the handles closed and begin turning the crank. Once you go completely around the can, you can lift the opener up. There is a magnet that lifts the lid and attaches to the opener. Open up the handles and shake the lid off. The edages of the can might still have some sharp edges so be careful. This can opener is much better than the traditional openers that leave the lids with jagged edges. This opener is also easier to crank than the sideways safety can openers. I bought one of those single handle black rod can openers where the crank is on the side and they were much more difficult to turn the crank, (especially if you have arthritis). Overall, this safety can opener works just fine.

Watch a video to learn how to use this openener
Not having used this type of can opener before, it was not obvious how to use it. I watched a you tube video to figure it out. Once I opened a couple cans, I found it easier to use than the conventional Zyliss can opener. Pros: - Once you figure it out, it is easy to use. - It needs very little strength to operate. - You can lift the lid and dispose of it without touching the lid. - It leaves fewer sharp edges than a conventional can opener. - Good price for this style of can opener. If you are curious about this type of can opener and don't want to spend a lot of money to experiment, this is a good choice. Cons: - The instructions don't really tell you how to use this. I had to watch you tube videos to figure this can opener out. - You can't see the contents of the can as you open it. If the can is filled to the brim with liquid (e.g., green beans), you are more likely to spill it as you open the can. - Not dishwasher safe. In fact, the instructions say wipe clean and dry. I wonder how this will hold up in my humid climate? - Mostly plastic. I don't know that it is sturdy enough for your "bug out kit". Neutral: - Marketing for some can openers of this type imply you can put the lid back on the can and pop the can into the fridge. I haven't been able to replace the lid on any can I have opened. This is an easier to use, safer can opener than conventional can openers. You will be replacing this, mark my words! (I expected more from Zyliss). I wouldn't rely on this for my emergency food supply, but it is handy for the kitchen.

Best can opener ever!
Came across this can opener by chance when we went to Minnesota for a family gathering. We purchased it because we forgot to bring ours to make our dish. I like it so much that I gave one to my daughter for her new home and I took another one to our home in Florida. Won't disappoint, so easy to use.

Easy to use, very sharp.
I bought this Zyliss can opener because the last Zyliss I had lasted well over 20 years without a problem. I used the new on as soon as possible. They don't make a big deal of it but this is a side cutting opener. You lay the cutter on top of the can and turn the handle to open the can. Before you know it, the lid is off! It was faster than my previous can opener but that one is old. This new one doesn't feel very sturdy but it really is surprisingly sturdy. The lids hang on until you are ready to release them. The only thing I didn't like is the choices of color! lol My kitchen is in muted grays and whites (or will be when I can paint it) with a touch of blue. It is a red can opener! Guess what-it opens the cans and that is the important thing. Does a great job and that's what I needed!

You get what you pay for….
Yes it works but the twist handle is small creating a stiff hard to twist to rotate all around the can. I bought it for my RV and won’t use it often and it’s not made of stainless steel on the cutting assembly so you can’t drop it in the sink water without rinsing and drying immediately. Rinse and dry quickly to stop rusting. And it’s made in yes you guest it… China. Really hard to find a USA product.

It doesn't cut the lids quite right- you can't fit them back on the can as a lid.
I always prefer these can openers that cut the can open without making a sharp disc that falls into the can, is hard to dig out, or stays partially attached to the can. This one works like that- it cuts a smooth edged disc that comes right off. One nice feature is that the disc stays attached to the can opener until you release it, so you don't have to handle it at all if you don't want to touch it. The main problem with this can opener is that it should cut the lid in such a manner that the lid fits back onto the can, so that the cut off lid can still function as a lid that keeps the food in the can fresh. But this can opener cuts a wonky opening that is smooth and safe, but somehow doesn't quite allow the lid to sit back onto the can nicely. Since that is really the main reason I like this kind of can opener, I can't recommend this one. Spend a few extra dollars to get one that really works well. This one is also made of fairly lightweight plastic, which I think might not hold up over time, and it makes me worry that the blade mechanism, which is working OK now, might also not be great quality- and maybe that's why it doesn't cut a lid that can fit back on the can.

Poor item.
I bought this can opener to replace a very old one which bears the same name...On trying to use it I had difficulty engaging it onto the rim of the can...After some minutes I managed to open the can---but it left a jagged piece of steel which could result in a nasty cut to a hand...Maybe this was a "One off" but certainly don't want to risk it again...KC.

Does not work on tins with wide seam
Looks OK but could not open the first can tried. It was a fairly large but standard size tin of fruit. The edge strip looked forman but the cutting wheel of the opener was centre of this making it too hard to cut through
