works with wondows 8.1 on a 2.5 inch SATA Western Digital Drive
I had to try multiple USB 3.0 ports on my laptop for the computer to recognize the new 2 TB 2.5 inch western digital drive attached to this adapter but eventually it worked and I was able to clone my laptop drive to the new drive. It took about 2 hours to clone the 1TB drive on the laptop but is was successful. I recommend the product.

Works great for the price
I like being able to plug in my old desktop/laptop IDE drives via USB to be able to pull stuff of of them. Being able to plug SATA drives into it as well is just a plus.

Don't need to be an IT expert to use this product
If you have any kind of a DIY attitude, don't bother overpaying a Geek Squad or some other techie to retrieve your data off of your old 40 pin hard drive for you. This product was easy to use. The hardest part was determining that it was this adapter I needed to use in the first place.

Requires IDE cable
The early review on this device is not good. I am trying to copy data from an ancient Maxtor 71084A IDE drive, and the converter device will not fit. The problem is that, on the Maxtor 71084A, the power connector is sitting right on top of the IDE connector, forbidding anything that is not a ribbon cable from plugging in. I have attached a photo of what I am talking about. Notice how the IDE adapter cannot plug in straight, as the end of the adapter is running into the power supply socket. And forget about plugging in the power supply cable with the "ears" on the plug. Ideally, the manufacturer (who included all the adapters and cables necessary to power the various IDE and SATA devices) would have included a 2-inch IDE ribbon cable to get around problems such as these. As it stands, I may need to order something similar to Amazon ASIN B01IZOOUGC before I can get this device to work. This model Maxtor drive may be an exception, and most other drives may plug in just fine. I do not know. I'm just working with what I have. I will update this review when I get a connector cable, and can review the actual device's performance.

Worked great once I figured it out!
I purchased this to access an old hard drive we removed from a Gateway desktop. It’s is a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 80 GB 3.5 IDE drive. I followed the enclosed instructions; drive would spin but wouldn’t show up on any computer. Took some digging to discover that I needed to remove the jumper from the drive, even though the instructions said to set it to “master”. Once I did that it worked perfectly. I’ll be trying it on a newer SATA drive soon and will update my review if needed. Certainly worth the price to confirm that I had, in fact, removed all my important items from the drive.

Could not get it to work and may have bricked one 2.5 SATA HDD
I could not get the adapter to work with IDE or SATA HDDs. They would spin up. Win10 would not recognize them. One 2.5 SATA (WD Black), the drive spun for a while, then stopped. I could not get the drive to work in any other SATA adapter I have. The drive was working the last time I used it. I tried other SATA drives without success (they did work in my other SATA adapters). For the IDE drives: One spun up, the other did nothing. I do not know if those drives are any good. I got this adapter for the IDE drives. *** UPDATE: I tried the adapter with my SATA drives and it worked perfectly. Added 2 stars. I bought this to connect to some old IDE drives. I ended up using an old Sabrent external enclosure that worked - it's USB 2.0, so things were slow.

It works for IDE drives, unless it doesn't... then you have to be creative.
I used this to read data from at least five (5) ancient IDE drives and one (1) SATA drive. It worked for all except one--a 4.3GB 34300 WD Caviar HD from 1998--I tried the jumpers in all sorts of settings--no dice. I connected this to an old computer with IDE cables and it turned out that the drive was dead. Some tips: (1) As for the other IDE drives, some had to be set to slave, not master. I figured this out by finding some documentation on the Vantec website that said the product might not work unless the drive is set to slave--in spite of the written directions that came in the box that insist on master. (2) The computer recognizes the drive right away, but can't always read any data from it--that's how you know the drive "works", but the jumper settings might interfere with the computers ability to read the data from it--so try different jumper settings. (3) If you use Windows, have the Disk Management window open. This window shows right away whether or not you'll be able to read data from the drive--or even see the drive. If you see Disk 1 (or perhaps some other number), but nothing else, then try changing the jumper settings. (4) Sometimes following the instructions work, sometimes it doesn't. Some drives I could read with my Win7 PC, some only with Win10. (5) Sometimes you have to plug things in a certain order according to the instructions, sometimes you have to change it up. It's crazy. It's amazing a device like this works at all. (6) Even if you manage to connect your hard drive, Windows Explorer would crash trying to read some folders. So download another Explorer-type program, and get your files off your hard drive. Jumpers settings and IDE drives with the PitA ribbons--good riddance.

It works great... once you read the instructions....
I've used this to pull files off of several old SATA & IDE hard drives that have been laying around forever. I did have an issue at first where I couldn't read the IDE hard drives as is mentioned by other reviewers, I was frustrated at first and about to give up, then I went back and re-read the instructions. It says specifically that you need to power up the IDE drive for a bit of time (30 seconds?) BEFORE you plug the USB cable into the receiving PC. Once I started allowing the drives to fully power up prior to making the USB connection it has worked perfectly every single time. It's a great product and I'm very happy with it. Have been able to recover old pictures for my family that they thought they would never see again. Smiles all around!

Useless for IDE hard drives
This was a major disappointment. I have a few older IDE cables with enclosures that I had acquired many years ago to connect my IDE hard drives too. They worked flawlessly without hassle. Sadly, this device has a lot of connectors and it's flaky at best. You need to mess around with jumper cables. The instructions say you need to set the IDE hard drive to master. I did so with my WD hard drive. It made no difference. My PC wouldn't see it. However, the SATA connection does work, but you have a few connectors as well. The SATA connection is useless to me since I already have a good SATA portable connector. This adapter is not as described and I'm returning it. Don't waste your time on it if you need it to run IDE hard drives.

Good set and does the job.
No drivers. Multi OS support. Tested in OSX, Windows 10, Windows 7 and Linux. You'll see reviews about this not reading IDE drives. It's easy to miss the pins on the ends because the plastic part of the connector doesn't completely fill most IDE drive slots and fits perfectly between the pins missed on either end. Also set the drive jumpers (that's right. jumpers) to cable select or master. I only know this after testing over 50 drives since I received my unit. This is just as good as my older non 3.0 adapter version which I gave away but faster for SATA. Recommended buy if you need to connect to everything. As usual the molex is a pain and can be hard to remove sometimes but that's not the fault of Vantec. Prompt delivery as well.
