I cannot have this surgery for over six months so he recommended that I stop using this hand for everything but ...
I bought it for my wife. What follows is her review: I wanted the Ergowriter because I have osteoarthritis in my thumb where it meets my hand or wrist, the carpometacarpal joint and my orthopaedic surgeon recommends replacing the joint. Having different things going on in my life, I cannot have this surgery for over six months so he recommended that I stop using this hand for everything but writing and find a pen grip that I could use comfortably. The Ergowriter stabilizes my thumb from moving and because the Ergowriter fits between my first and middle finger securely, I do not have to exert any pinching motion between my thumb and first finger to hold a pen to write. I removed the ballpoint pen that came in the Ergowriter and replaced it with a Uniball Signo 207 blue gel pen (with click button on the end to open and close) and can take notes in class for hours without any thumb pain whereas before I started to use the Ergowriter, I could not sign my name without having sharp pain and hand weakness. The Ergowriter even improved the quality of my handwriting. My daughter told me she could read my cursive writing for the first time in years. I recommend the Ergowriter for anyone with arthritis in their wrist, hand or thumb or anyone that suffers from difficulty or pain with the pincher motion that is normal with an opposable thumb. - artzish

Total protection for your thumb joint
My thumb is very arthritic and misshapen. I have been experimenting with various writing aids. This one is great because it totally takes your thumb out of the action. Your thumb rests on the curved piece, which wedges in the web area between your thumb and finger. My problem was in the "pinching" action of thumb to finger. This device immobilizes your thumb. You do have to practice with it, and it takes a moment to position it unlike just grabbing a pen for a quick note. The reason I gave it 4 stars is because it will only fit on a stick pen. Ballpoint pens require pressure to write. A gel pen or felt pen would be easier on my hand as they require very little pressure to write, but they have a thicker barrel and this device won't fit. Maybe they will make more sizes. I hope so!

A Label on the Ergo-Writer says it could cause cancer! a pen holder?
I am so disappointed in this Ergo-Writer. There is a label placed where your thump goes that says it can cause cancer! Less important is, the pen fits so tight, it would be near to impossible to change pen when it ran out of ink! I bought it for my aunt who has arthritis in her hands. I paid almost $24. The seller's picture shows one yellow rubber thing that holds the pen inside the Ergo-Writer. It actually has 2 pink rubber things: one near the top and one near the bottom of the pen, which holds the pen so tight, you can't remove it. I'm able-bodied, and I can't get the pen out. My aunt would never be able to change pens -- inf fact, I doubt anyone could. The design might work -- but the price, and what I described above makes this pen a no-go. DO NOT BUY THIS PEN! This is the first time I've ever heard a pen holder could cause cancer! Why is it on the market? BEWARE!

My writing is now legible
I have a disability that doesn't allow me to grip a pen firm enough to write legibly. I recently went back to college so I bought two of these one for a pencil one for my pen. Some pens are a tight fit and you have to use some force to get them in. And pencils are too thin to stay in the circular part of the grip. I just stick my pencil through the triangular shape part of the grip and if stays in place. I would highly recommend for anyone with diminished dexterity in their hands.

Best writing assistant ever
This kind of strange looking writing assist is the best for me. I have neuropathy in my hands and it causes difficulty and cramping pain when I write. The Ableware supports your thumb so it does not come in contact with your fingers...thus releaving any cramping or force onto the hand or fingers. As you use the Ableware you will begin to notice the thumb relaxing and your fingers and hand do all the work for you. It makes it really easy to use whether you use your right or left hand. I have tried other assistive devices, but this is by far my favorite. No pain..all gain!!

I'd like the pen to be a bit more fat
Works ok, I'd like the pen to be a bit more fat, but that's a personal preference.

Maybe too rigid
The plastic is a bit too rigid to get a stylus thru it. I could get the pen back thru it after I pulled it free.

You can’t see what you’re writing when you use it!
Disappointing. It is comfortable for the carpal tunnel, but useless.
