I love this Swiss lobster cracker!

At least for the table. (If I'm breaking down a lobster in the kitchen, then I'll simply use the back of a heavy chefs knife.) NOTE that any lobster over 2 Lb will require a hammer, not a cracker. 4 Lb and up, a hand maul. However all this only applies to the claws. The tail, even of a large lobster, doesn't require a tool of any kind. This cracker is lightweight, easy to use with buttery hands, and with it's red color, it's easy to find at an outdoor picnic. Be careful of most crackers as many are either useless or difficult to use. One that particularly comes to mind is a stupid design in the shape of a lobster claw. Sure, it's really cute...until you actually try to use them, which when you find out they cut into your hands at the slightest pressure. Since most restaurants have chintzy tools, when eating out in NYC I'd bring my own Zyliss cracker and a Global seafood pick -- the best ones out there, along with a pair of Joyce Chen scissors. However, if you don't want to drop the $$$ for the Global, then Zyliss makes a decent set of picks. The part to pay attention to is the "claw". Some brands are so smooth as to be useless. You'll find that a good set of picks are only minimally useful on lobster (mostly the joints), but they're essential for King or Snow Crab -- even Maryland crab. FYI, most people who live outside New England are at a loss at how to take a lobster apart. More expensive restaurants will do it for you, but where's the fun in that? Instead, check You Tube for videos on how to do it -- there are a bunch. Now, I just have to decide how to best take advantage of my chain Supermarket Lobster Sale...$4.99 Lb.

Best Seafood Cracker

My family has been eating crab for years and cracking the crab is part of the eating rituals. But the cracking tools we used were nut crackers or small wood mallets and I've felt there has got to be different utensils that are designed to make this job easier, if not better. Better so you aren't crushing or pulverizing the shells and mashing the meat inside. So like I do now with every purchase I make, I start to search/review for a product that will suit my needs. There are a lot of seafood crackers available - different styles, colors, functions - makes your head spin! Finally I narrowed down my choice to this Zyliss Seafood Cracker. It's simple but functional. I liked it's efficient styling and color. It is plastic but hard, durable plastic. It seems to hold up to even the hardest shell. I've used it a few times now and it is a great investment. It cracks shells without shattering them and performs as well as a metal cracker. It seems durable and made well. Even when your hands get a bit scummy, you're able to grip and use the cracker. I ordered a few of these to give to my crab loving family along with the HIC Lobster Crab Seafood Pick. Both are a great combination and a big improvement over a nut cracker and chopstick.

Heavy duty crab cracker

I was concerned when I saw the Zyliss online because of the plastic. I thought they might not be strong enough or too flimsy for seafood. Over the years we've had good luck with other Zyliss products so I decided to give these a change. Tonight they cracked dungeness crab with easy, even the claws. I only bought one pair to test, but all four of liked the wide body, it kept the crab shell more intact in big pieces than a bunch of little shards, the teeth gripped for a good hold on the crab and cracking the crab was easy, even for me with my arthritis. We will be ordering more of these so we can all sit around the table with our own crab cracker, great product.

Fantastic! Until the lobster won...

The lobster won... Second time using the Plastic crackers and one of them cracked into 2 pieces and is now unusable. They are not as durable as they first appeared! After the first use, Never ever using a metal cracker again! These crackers are sturdy, work great and do not slide around in slippery hands! So happy I bit the bullet and decided to replace my metal crackers????

Didn't like this. I purchased it for cracking lobster claws, but it punched a hole through it instead of just cracking. Might be good for crab legs, but I haven't tried.
