Good cabinet paint

Does not pass the scratch test

This primer applies nice but does not pass the scratch test. I was looking for the best primer for applying over wood cabinets and paneling that have a shellac finish, sanded to a dull finish of coarse, but this easily scratched off after 2 coats and 2 days of dry time. So far the best primers I've tried are Stix, Bin Shellac and BM Oil 024 (no longer available) based Fresh Start.

Great primer for cabinets I built

Built three cabinets and used this primer. Adhered to wood. Great and nice and smooth.

A good primer for wood

We have used this primer successfully on a number of projects with wood, including a garage door in an area outdoors that is hit by a fair amount of rain. The paint has held up well even without the Sherwin Williams Emerald top coat in Cotton White that we were going to use. Emerald has a primer in it, but we thought this Smart Prime covered better than expected and so far we haven't used the Emerald on the door. This Smart Prime may be a little thicker than some other primers, which might explain its effectiveness in comparison with other primers. Remember to stir it well. We have bought 9 cans of this over about 4 years and would buy it again

Great coverage, excellent "sandability"

Painting all our oak and pine trim white. Used oil based primer for the kitchen cabinets - hated the smell and tannins were still seeping through. Smart prime seems to fix all that with nothing more than a standard low VOC smell. Just open the windows after a few hours, and it goes away quickly. Covers great (work with small amounts at a time as it does thicken quickly), lays flat well with a quality brush. "Sandability" is comparable to oil base - excellent. Just make sure it dries completely first. It also seems to completely block tannins as the label notes as I have not had to deal with any bleed through yet.

Great Primer

My husband and I recently painted our maple cabinets white. I did a lot of research and watch videos and this primer appealed the most to us. We thinned it using flotrol and then used a paint sprayer to apply the primer. We put 2 coats of this primer and waited 24 hours between coats. Then painted the cabinets with a Ben Moore paint. The paint went on very well. Very smooth and profession finish.

Successfully used on MDF cabinet doors

I purchased this primer to use on MDF cabinet doors. In the past, I had problems with water base paints and primers being soaked up by the MDF material and swelling. Did not swell with this primer. Now doors are sealed and ready for latex. Be sure and use a high quality roller for best coverage and smoothness.
