Updated for 2-month Review... dropped 1 star... from 5 to 4 stars
[Dropped to 3 Stars -- UPDATED --- 2 MONTH REVIEW] Daily Commuter : Does "Good" as my daily commuter... very tough and well built Biking Backpack : Does "Just OK"... see short-term and long-term comments Travel Backpack : I do not recommend... To bulky... just barely fits under seat... if you are above average size it may not work well for you. After 2 months I still like this backpack... but there a additional comments I'd like to add for Amazon users considering this backpack. If you find this review helpful... Please click the Helpful button... It lets me know its worth my time writing reviews... I have always found them useful when buying in Amazon... and want to return the kindness to my fellow Amazon users... Overall... Still Happy with this backpack for my 3 uses... Everyday commuter backpack for work... I bike an hour in the morning and evening for exercise as part of my commute... I travel West-East coast monthly. Additional Likes: - It has both a carrying handle, and a hanging strap... the hanging strap is really useful to hand the back on a hood. - I like the numerous pockets to keep my things organized when using this backpack as my everyday commuter back Additional Dislikes: - This backpack does not make as good a "Biking" backpack as it does a Commuter/Travel backpack. I ride in hour long journeys... any longer than that and it gets uncomfortable - It seems like this backpack does not hold as much as it should... the alignment of the pouches, or padding in the laptop section seem to make it no hold as much. It still holds a lot of stuff... It's just that I cannot over-stuff it like I did my old backpack. - This backpack needs a break-in period, like a pair of new boots... It felt like a wooden create on my back for the first month. Especially the bottom edge the is very firm to allow it to "stand-up". Additionally, the straps are very firm, and dug into my neck when biking - this is still noticeable on my rides, getting better, but still an issue. I needed a very durable backpack, and this is just part of is needed I guess. - The main compartment has a separator that serves no useful purpose for any of my needs as a commuter/biker/traveler. In addition it gets in the way of loading/unloading items... I took scissors to it and cut it out it was so annoying. - Did a couple of coast-to-coast plane trips... This backpack does fit under the seat in front of you... but just barely. If you are a big guy/gal, there may not be much room. Takes up much more space than my older backpack. I dropped a star because of this issue... I do not recommend as a travel backpack. - This backpack should hold more stuff... It does hold a lot of stuff... but just does not hold as much as I'd expect. - This backpack extends much farther outward from you back than I'd like... I continually bump into people and walls, etc. [ 4 Stars --- ORIGINAL INITIAL, SHORT-TERM, REVIEW] Great Backpack, Well Made; This was my WINNER!, of three Swiss Gear backpacks that I ordered. First of this is a top quality backpack, and I recommend it to you if its features fulfill your needs. Second, if you read this post, please click YES to this review being helpful if it was... Please. My Specific needs: "Commuter, Travel, & Biking Backpack" I am a "Super Commuter" to the San Francisco Bay area, which means I take a car/bike(11 miles) to the train station, then the train, then bus/bike/walk to the office building. So I'm constantly jumping off of one form of transportation onto another. I need a bag that can keep up with me. I also fly coast-to-coast about 10 times a year. I generally carry my laptop, i-pad, phone, charging cords, jacket, change of clothes (when I bike), and numerous small things... So my backpack needs to meet my needs in both these key areas. I bike often for work commute and pleasure, so a good biking backpack was a top need too. The three backpacks I eventually ordered and evaluated in person (keeping one, returning two): 1) Swiss Gear SA9768 Black Laptop Computer Backpack - Fits Most 15 Inch Laptops and Tablets; $45; (RETURNED) This backpack is well made, good quality, and I could recommend if it meets your specific requirements. I did not choose this backpack, because it lacked enough pockets to be a good commuter backpack for me. This is a low cost backpack, than the other two and its material durable and good quality, but I noticed that it was not as thick/durable as the other high priced backpacks. Another miss, was the lack of a good mini-pocket for my wallet and phone. I pull these out 20 times a day, and a dedicated pocked for these items was essential. 2) Swiss Gear 17 inch Laptop Backpack Waterproof Traveling Bag Outdoor Hiking Backpacks Students School knapsack Rucksack; $80; (RETURNED) This backpack is well made, excellent quality, and I could recommend if it meets your specific requirements. This backpack has pockets galore! If you need to be very organized, and places for important documents etc. this is for you. I did not choose this backpack because it did not have sufficient, zippered pockets (webbed or enclosed) for organization of my little items. There is one little mini-pocket on the upper front, it could hold my wallet, or phone, or badges & key cards (I have 5), but it could not hold all of them. Cons: The lower front mini-pocket is narrow and deep (goes all the way to the bottom), I found it hard to stick my arm all the way down to get items on the bottom. The organizational pocket was nice except, the zippered pocked was only 50% of the width, and couldn’t hold my checkbook. No zippered web-pockets were put in any of the 4 main full-size pockets. (my biggest disappointment with this backpack) Because it has 4 full-size pockets, the MAIN pockets front-to-back size is not as big as I’d like… it is the sacrifice of having so many pockets. The bottom padding for the laptop is a Velcro attached piece of padding… probably added after people started complaining about lack of padding at the bottom of the pocket. It should be sufficient, but a noticeable retro-fit. (see pic) Pros: The side zipper pockets are more useful of all 3 backpacks I ordered, easy to get items like headphone, chargers, etc. Holds all-size water bottle well. Laptop pocket is well padded, with waterproof zipper (it’s the only zipper that is made this way) They designed low-noise zipper pulls for this backpack; this is nice so it does not sound like Christmas every time you shake on the back. (I loved this ) 3) Wenger Synergy Backpack, Gray (GA-7305-14F00); $80; (MY WINNER) This backpack is well made, excellent quality, and I could recommend if it meets your specific requirements. This back design is over 8+ years old for a reason… people really like it. It has over 900 amazon review! It meet all my needs that I described above, and I'm very happy with it. Cons: Cable handle looks awesome, but ruins the professional look of the back in my opinion. I wish it had the handle of the back #2 above. The 2 zippered side pockets are deep with a narrow zipper opening, it awkward to reach items at the bottom. Don’t use for items you need frequent access to. Pros: 5, count them 5!, zippered mini-pockets that hold miscellaneous small items. Great for organization of you stuff. The front lower zippered pocked has a small zipper… BUT the pocked is the full height and width of the front panel… it can hold a lot more items than you think! Gapping large MAIN pocket! The front-to-back size is large and will hold many things like sneakers. Even though this backpack has 3 full, and one 2/3 size pockets, the main pocket will still hold much stuff when traveling. Bottom Line: When searching for my new backpack I found I needed to really understand my needs in a backpack. The backpack I eventually choose was the one that met my needs for the best price vs quality ratio. Your needs are unique to you… You will save time in finding the right backpack for you, if you evaluate wha

Best backpack for a college student ever.
This so far has been the best backpack I have ever purchased. And this particular brand of backpack has a small following at my local college. My friend had purchased the "pegasus" version of this backpack, which is intended for 17" laptops and is almost identical to this one. I really liked the design styles on the backpack. I appreciate when something I use every day is built with quality because the last thing I need is for it to break down. I like that the handle on the top of the bag is actually a steel cable that is bolted to the material of the bag. It's covered in a plastic sleeve and a padded handle so that it's also comfortable to lift the bag from that durable handle. That has to be the most durable handle I've ever seen. A steel cable is overkill, but I like overkill. There are pockets out the wazoo on this thing and I'm not sure if that's a bonus to you, but it's a bonus to me. Lets see if I can recount all the pockets. There's the back-most pocket which is intended for storing the laptop. There is a padded sleeve inside the backpack to which you slide your laptop into, you can then strap the laptop more securely into the sleeve using an elastic Velcro strap. This brings me to my first and only gripe about the backpack. An acquaintance of mine has an older model of this backpack and the strap for securing the laptop in the sleeve actually has a very durable plastic clip. This model uses Velcro instead of a clip. Personally I would prefer the clip since Velcro only has a limited lifetime and also likes to cling to dust and other debris, and that bothers me. Even still, I could care less. If the Velcro strap becomes a problem I'll just cut it off and do without. There is an additional mesh pocket in the rear-most laptop pocket which is seems like it's intended for pencils or something but I use it to store my full-size desktop mouse as well as a USB flash drive for use with my laptop. There is a small amount of extra room in that pocket which can be utilized for a small - medium folder or perhaps 1 large textbook or two small textbooks. It's really up to you. I use it to hold a single small textbook which I actually keep inside of a bubble-wrap envelope to protect the edges. The next pocket as you move forward is a very small ( yet cozy ) pocket. The fabric inside that pocket is a red color and it also appears padded. This pocket is intended for an mp3 player but since it's about 7 inches deep you could even put a small cdplayer in there with extra cd's. I mainly use this pocket to hold my business cards, I put them inside the small sleeve intended for the mp3 player. I also store various drugs in there for easy access (OTC). P.S. this pocket is usually very skinny when your backpack is filled to capacity since there's no room for it to expand. The next pocket as you move forward to the front of the bag is the main pocket. This pocket is massive and this is pretty much the only pocket you have for storing your school supplies other than that rearmost laptop pocket. There's a small padded flap in there that you can either put up ( to make the bag appear slimmer ) or put it down ( to widen the pocket and provide a more stable base to keep it from toppling over ) I personally cram my backpack to capacity so this flap is always down. I keep 4 1" folders in there and 3 small manilla envelops filled with paperwork. Those three together come to about 1/2 inch. And I still have room for a large textbook. If I were to put in a large textbook,( for example a biology textbook ) I would expect that this pocket would no longer be able to fit any more stuff. However inside this pocket there is a rather large mesh pocket. I have no idea what you're supposed to store in it. I leave it empty, and if your backpack was stuffed to capacity it probably wouldn't be of much use. But if your a slim backpack type student I'm sure you can make use of it for something. There is also a sleeve in the back of the main pocket which I use to hold my three manilla envelopes separate from the rest of the cavity. Moving forward from the main pocket there is a smaller sized ( cozy pocket ) I say it's cozy since I love sliding my hand into it and filling the smooth cold fabric which is thick so it appears padded. I'm not sure what you could store in this pocket. Some spare papers or another manilla envelope type object. It's a very thin pocket. More like a sleeve with a zipper top. I use this pocket to store additional drugs (OTC). Moving forward from that there's the "main utility/pencil/calculator" pouch. I'm not sure what to call it but that's where I keep my pencils erasers and whiteout. Inside of that pouch theres a zippered sleeve in which I keep my spare erasers, three-hole-punch-paper-reinforcing-stickers, and also all the warranty cards for the backpack. I use the mesh sleeve to hold my pencils and pens. (Note: there are no pencil sleeves. You know, the kind that hold like a single pencil or pen. Personally I'm kind of happy about that since I usually carry like 5 pens and two pencils.) The mesh sleeve is ideal for it since it provides room for about a dozen pen/pencils and they can all clip onto it and stay put very well. There's a clip in there you can use to store your keys, so they don't stab your leg through your inferior pocket. There's a couple of knife-holder pockets in here as well. One of them I use to store a utility-knife/needle-nose-plier. Another I use to store 4 of the fate dry-erase markers. Most the other tiny sleeves in there I leave empty since they seem to be meant for business/credit cards/ids and I don't need those since I have a wallet. P.S. this is a padded pocket as well. Moving forward one last time there's another smaller pocket which is also padded which I don't use for anything. Now on each side right and left there are two sleeve pockets. 1 zippered sleeve pocket and then over that one there's a mesh sleeve. I don't use the mesh sleeves for anything except sometimes those travel-size kleenix pouches. The zippered sleeve on the right I use to store my laptops charging cable. And the zippered sleeve on the left I use to store my Ti-84 Graphic calculator. So all in all there's 9 zippered pockets if you don't count the mesh ones and there are 11 zippered pockets if you do count the zippered mesh pockets. and many more than that if you count all the sleeves. I use to carry 2 backpacks. Now I carry 1 backpack! This purchase was extremely worth it for that reason alone. Padding out the wazoo. Pockets out the wazoo. Durable to last to... the wazoo. Highly recommended.

The version changed with time
This is my third backpack for the exact model. This version made some "simplifications" which I don't like: 1. The middle chest belt is removed making it easy to shift while biking. 2. The belt material is changed and now it becomes slippery. 3. Some of the zip handles becomes smaller (and cheaper) than previous versions. Overall, it is still among the good backpack classes, but the modification is towards direction of cheaper, less reliable, more difficult to handle while traveling, and less durable.

Great Laptop Bag
I've been using a laptop at work forever. Many years ago, I bought a similar Wenger bag for it and have always loved it. It literally went around the world on business trips. Now for the first time, I bought a laptop for my own use. We took a vacay to Nashville and needed a bag to carry it in. Who else would I go to? Wenger, of course. This is not exactly the same bag, but it is close and it does exactly what I needed. Plenty of room for laptop and accessories. In fact, I could squeeze an extra change of clothes in there if I was concerned about my luggage not arriving with me. There are less expensive bags, but I trust the Wenger brand and happily paid the extra to have something I trusted and liked. This is a great bag. Recommended.

This is my third one. The other two are also still in use.
I have owned and used on a daily basis, a Wenger backpack that is similar to this one for 15 years. I use it for work. I use it for travel. A few years ago, I finally convinced my family to stop annually buying gimmicky back-to-school backpacks with cartoon characters and get a real backpack for my middle-schooler. It was this model. He is still using it in high school. We purchased another one for his brother and he's already in his second year with it. My wife now also owns one. These are as solid as they come, in my opinion.
