but it was nice to have the ratcheting feature
purchased this being well aware of it's out of packaging limitations. Ground some flat areas on the shaft, and put it to work. The batteries on my old Ryobi drills are all over 4 yrs. old, so they were drained fairly quickly, but it was nice to have the ratcheting feature. However I finally had to quit with the cordless drill and switch to a corded one. Here lies the problem, Our soil is mostly rocks and clay. With the cordless drills, they would prevent most of the stress to the auger. The corded drill just kept trying to auger out the rocks. I would have to use the forward or reverse feature of the corded drill to free up the auger. Eventually, the weld on the flighting broke and folded up on itself, however I was able to finish planting. All that being said I was able to auger out holes for 94 plants, all of the holes were drilled out using four spaced holes, for a total of close to 400 separate holes augered out. I will buy this one again, however will weld up the flighting all along the shaft as well as grind flats on it also. I feel like I got my $$ worth out of it,

Useful for planting trees
I have used augers to do the following in the last 3 months. We have very clayey soil. I have dug 2' dia and 2' deep holes by augering on a small grid and removing loosened soil. Much easier physically for those getting older. Be careful with drill kick, and dont be afraid to back out and not go as deep. Do vertical lifts of 6"s, then do again. Very controllable. I have 3 different sizes of augers. You can use for the Compost too.

It is a great tool for its purposes
I just finished a yard construction job where I, as a homeowner, needed to drill holes about 12" deep to drive steel tubes down into the ground to function as leg supports for a wrought iron trellis. This auger drills 1.25" holes into soil. It worked perfectly. I am not a construction worker and I am not building skyscrapers. This inexpensive tool is spectacular for its purposes and price. I cannot believe some reviewers whine over its quality. It is quite fine for its purposes. It's fabricated as one might expect and works well. I did lots of online research and also drove to several gardening and farm supply stores. NO ONE offered a 1.25" diameter garden auger. I then went home and despite some of the complainer-reviews I ordered this product. The project is complete. The auger is excellent. If your soil hard-packed, perhaps wet it awhile, first. But I had no problem at all.

Makes planting bulbs easy, but watch out for landscape fabric
We bought two bags of bulbs at Costco, totaling 250 bulbs. To speed planting, I got this Yard Butler auger to use in my cordless drill. We planted about 70 bulbs in part of the yard that has landscape fabric, and that made it more tedious to use the Yard Butler auger. I couldn't just drill through the landscape fabric -- that caused a twisted mess to wrap around the auger. I had to cut the fabric in each spot a bulb was to be planted, and that was time consuming. At the other part of the yard, there was no fabric and I could use the auger directly. It made the job go amazingly fast, especially where there were no rocks or roots. If it's just soil, this thing will have you in and out in 2-3 seconds -- nice! The drill I use is a nice quality Hitachi cordless drill, for which I have two batteries. The first battery ran out about halfway through and the second one finished it. It was easy with this auger bit, and planting that many bulbs would have been an ordeal without it. The picture shows the bulbs we planted, the drill and auger bit... after the job was done.

works great for any small hole!
I used this auger to make small holes to put an iron hose holder in the ground that had been covered with rocks. Because of the shape on the freestanding holder I couldn't use a hammer. It worked great! I also used it to put a weathervane stake in the ground, not able to pound it in. I originally bought this to plant flowers which works for small plants in flats. This fall I will be using it to plant some small bulbs like crocus. For larger bulbs I already have a 2" auger. It is important to know that you must go slow or it will wrench your wrist. I pulsed it so I wouldn't have this problem. It fit my drill perfectly since it wasn"t rounded at the bottom but was a hexagon. If you plan on planting any amount of bulbs or plants get a selection of augers. I am still amazed how fast you can plant.

Pretty sturdy, got job done in hard clay soil
The cylindrical shank seems sacrificial. You can see in the photo how it wore down after boring holes in pretty hard clay soil. I make these holes for tree fertilizer spikes- much easier than trying to hammer them in which is impossible. So anyway with my 1/2” electric drill this was enough of a beast. The welds held up great and though the leading flute dulled / wore out a bit a file can bring it back. I had to cut an inch or so off the shank with a hacksaw when I was done. No tool put to demanding use is going to last forever; I’m getting my money’s worth.

Life Saver!!!
Life saver. I used this but to drill over a hundred holes in a sloped planter for planting three flats of Trailing Rosemary plants. Now I've done this by hand in the same planter three times previously and after using this bit, I questioned why I had never bought one sooner. I literally had all the holes dug in les than 10 minutes. The prep and planting took the bulk of my time whereas it used to be the opposite. The bit did loosen off the chuck a couple of times but that was no big deal. Just resign ten the chuck and use up and down motions when using the tool. At the end of the day, it's a corkscrew. If you push any similar bit too hard, it's going to get stuck! After about 15 quick holes, you'll get the hang of it and never regret the purchase. I used it with a cordless drill on the low setting. It took a bit longer but made for a cleaner hole for backfilling purposes.

Roto Auger/Soil Drill
Hole circumference not more than 1/1/2" (38mm) might be suitable for crocus and bulb size under that, the shaft will just slip round in drill chuck in when in use I will make some amendments to the design and drill holes in the lawn for drainage

Great aid for planting tulips
I have some disabilities (knees and carpal tunnel) which make it difficult to do some gardening tasks but I refuse to quit gardening. Instead, I look for aids, tools, and equipment that will assist me so that I don't have to quit. This auger came highly recommended by the very popular YouTube channel Garden Answer and since I highly respect their referrals I bought this auger. It does work by digging a hole for my tulip bulbs. I did find pushing it down into the soil helped with the drilling and that I could pull it straight out but it was far easier on the hands to reverse the drill out of the hole. I then dropped in some bulb fertilizer and then the bulb and covered them over. This auger, of course, drills one hole at a time so it's handy when wanting to make a hole in small areas. Highly recommend and it really helps reduce the effort on hands and wrists.

Design is such that it Slips inside the drill. ...
Design is such that it Slips inside the drill. Similar products have a hexagonal milling on the shaft so it sticks in teh chuck. This one is just round, so the second you encounter resistance the drill just spins.

Dangerously sharp!! Started rusting after one use
The Auger isn’t 100% straight which results in making it harder to drill holes. Also I cut myself first time when inserting the auger onto my drill!! Keep away from kids please!!!! 2 weeks later it started rusting! Not sure how it’s going to look in few months.

Excellent tool
I needed it for installation of my picket fence, and I cannot imagine I could succeed without this tool. It was firmly sitting in my drill, never fell out or broke, and did a very good job in making holes for the fence stakes.
