Several important things to consider
SOME OBSERVATIONS TO THINK ABOUT: 1. At the selling price at time the review was written of just over one hundred dollars, it is overpriced. There is a PowerSmith ash vac that is virtually identical selling for about $30 less that comes with more accessories and has over 1200 reviews. This product is not worth the asking price which is the main reason it only earns 4-stars. 2. The hose is only 3’ … that is a problem for a product designed to clean ashes. If I place it on the floor in front of my fireplace the hose has to reach over the hearth and all the way to the rear of the firepit. That distance is between 4-5’. And to clean the ash from my kettle barbecue the distance from the ground to the bottom of the kettle bowl is over 5’. I would have to lift the entire vacuum and hold it in the air to reach inside my barbecue. 3. It only comes with ONE tool (a crevice tool with a very large open end). There is no reason this should not be a multi-purpose vacuum but the seller has targeted as something designed for ashes only. That’s a lot of money to spend for a dedicated ash vac that offers no other special features over a standard shop vac 4. The “LED hose” is fluff. If you expected it to be powered from the vacuum you would be wrong, it gets its power from tiny hearing-aid batteries inside the wand. The light is located where the hose connects to the wand extensions and any light that gets thrown onto the work is insignificant and useless; the LED feature is nothing more than a gimmick. THE PLUS SIDE This vac is not without its virtues though. For one, the tank is all metal and the ashes are deposited directly into the tank, not a bag or any kind of removable container. That does require that the entire vac be lifted and dumped into the trash (which may be a bit of a challenge for some people because it can get quite heavy once full of ashes) but I would say it is relatively easy to clean. After dumping the ashes the container can be brushed out with a soft duster-type wand. I also like that the nozzle and its extension are made of aluminum so if they do come in contact with ashes that are still warm they won’t melt. The hose has a non-crush spiral spring inside, another plus feature. And the hose twist-locks into the canister so it won’t pull out during use. These are all reasons this product was rated generally positively (Amazon defines “I like it” as a 4-star product) The replaceable filter appears to be a different size than other models used by the same company and does not appear to be readily available. Based on the price of other filters sold by this company though you could buy a whole new vacuum at the hardware store for about the same price. Compare that to the PowerSmith which uses a washable filter, keeping the overall cost of ownership down. All things considered the biggest concern about this product (other than being overpriced) is the too-short hose which can’t be extended. That plus the metal canister can get quite heavy and must be lifted and turned upside down to empty it. There are no handles to grab it or hold it so you end up having to wrap your arms around the whole canister or grab the plastic wheels which can pull out of their sockets. Armed with these points to consider I hope this evaluation has been helpful. A dedicated ash vac as a nice (but not mandatory) accessory to own but I would put its real-life value closer to about $50-60 rather than over $100.

Don't use it while the stove is hot!
We have a pellet stove and it works great. We also got one for our kids that have a fireplace. Kids sucked up hot ashes and melted the filter and blew ash all over. Make sure the ashes have a chance to cool down before using.

Needs Longer Hose
This is a well made vacuum unit that has it's performance hampered by a hose that is very, very short. At 3 feet in length the hose and 1 foot nozzle are just barely able to reach the rear of my fireplace, and when used on the barbecue grill on the patio the hose does not reach up over the rim of the grill and down to the ashes that have not fallen into the ash collector of the grill. The vacuum only comes with a "crevice tool like" attachment and the short hose makes this pretty much a single purpose tool. The hose seems to have a locking feature that prevents the use of a longer replacement hose. As others have pointed out the "Wet Dry Vac" is only for DRY pick-up and at the $100.00 plus price tag this could / should be a full feature shopvac with a longer hose, crevice tool, floor pick-up tool and brush attachment. On the plus side, I have vacuumed ashes with my old wet & dry plastic shopvac after the ashes cooled for several days and the dust cloud that came out of the exhaust tube does not occur with this vacuum - - - but the filter that prevents the dust cloud does load up fairly fast and needs cleaning quite often. I received this as a Vine Program offer but if I had paid over $100.00 for it, I would feel I had not gotten my money's worth. Bottom Line - - - This is marketed as an Ash Vacuum and that is what you get, but all that you get.

Not a Wet Vac, but picks up Ash well.
I used this vac to clean my fireplace just now- new for me, since i normally sweep it clean with a handbroom and dustpan. i attached pics showing how the vac came out of the box, and a pic of the intro instruction page. a few things to note. this title says wet dry vac...however, the instruction manual clearly says, "It should not be used to pick up liquids." so...NOT a wet vac, at least according to it's manual, pg. 6. The instructions show that one screw driver is required as a tool for set-up. however, you only need the screw driver to tighten the nozzle to the extension wand, or to disassemble/ add batteries to the nozzle/wand flashlight portion (will talk about that later). it took me all of 30 seconds to snap together the hose and two nozzles to the bucket, and snap in the four casters. The filter was already assembled and attached to the lid when i got it. The construction of the vac is sturdy, well-made, and fully metal in the "belly" where it counts, with the non-metal portions being the filter on the underside of the lid, the hose and the area where the hose snaps into the side of the metal bucket, the tray the entire bucket sets on, that you snap the casters into, and that yellow handle and casing on top. the capacity is 5 gal, but you could realistically have maybe 3 gal. ash pickup tops, without getting too close to the filter. The nice thing is, the entire bottom portion of the inside is metal, so any slightly hot ashes should be held safely, provided they are not hot enough to spark the filter at the top of the inner lid. The warning on pg. 2 of the instruction manual also clearly says, "This vacuum is intended to pick up COLD ash..." (caps in the instruction manual). I really like that the instruction manual is very detailed, and well-written in English (and Spanish and French). The company is Emerson Electric, and their workshop appears to be in St. Louis. I don't know where the item is made, however. As a vacuum itself, it's not exceptionally powerful (sounds like a regular hair dryer), and my normal vacuum has much more suction. However, it easily picked up light ash from the fireplace. i could smell some amt. of the ash in the air after vacuuming, but i guess that is to be expected with something as fine as ash. this isn't a Dyson, but as far as i know, Dyson does not make metal canisters to hold dust, so this does have use. One interesting feature, is a flashlight at the section where the handle meets the extension nozzle- i've attached a pic of the single bulb. This was useful for the fireplace, where it's dark, so you can better see what you're doing. it came with the battery installed, and worked when i tried the switch. overall, i would recommend this item, esp. for outdoor metal fire pit cleanup, or the inner section of your big grill, where it's hard to reach. for the inside fireplace, though, i think i'll stick to my handbroom and dustpan, cuz it's easy enough by hand, and i found it a hassle to dump the ashes (lift off lid, pick up canister, dump)- ash fluffs all over. gotta dump outside, not in the garage.

Boyau trop court!

Don't bother
Vacuum is extremely weak. Doesn't even pick up all of the dry ash, I doubt it would pick up wet ash. Too bad it's too late to return this item.
