Excellent Value
A power tool with a cast iron table top at this price is practically unbeatable. That said, I wish the tabletop surface were a bit smoother. The cast iron has a directional grain of sorts. A flat, level, polished surface would most likely require expensive machining, which would significantly increase price, and this table is perfectly serviceable. Anyhow, this is a nit-picky comment. The machine works great. It's stable as a slice of granite. The dust removal works fine attached to my shop vac. The onboard storage is helpful. The manual is helpful overall; however, I think my tool's supply of metal washers differs slightly from those indicated in the instruction manual section on tool operation. It's by no means a problem. Actually, the supplied washers are an improvement over the washers described in that section of the manual. There's an extra large steel washer included that holds the rubber sanding drum very securely on the post/ shaft that's attached to the motor. I ended up using that washer on all the largest rubber cylinders because it worked so well. This little discrepancy from the manual is easy to figure out. Also, I found some zirconium sanding cylinders at the big orange box store that turned out to be a helpful accessory for sanding high carbon steel. The manual warns against sanding anything but wood, probably because of the risk associated with the possibility of a spark igniting any sawdust inside the machine or inside your dust collection system. For the price I paid for this unit, that's a risk I was willing to take: for better or worse. So far, no harm done. I've sanded steel and bog oak on this machine, and it performed well on both accounts. The sanding drum moves up and down while spinning in order to maximize the sanding surface and to give a smooth finish on the workpiece. If you're sanding thinner material, then the upper part of your sandpaper will remain unaffected by the sanding action of the machine. I will probably end up trimming the sandpaper tubes to remove the used portion, and get more life out of them. I kinda wish the little removable plastic parts that fit around the sanding drums were a thicker plastic or - better yet - made of metal. However, the oblong shape of the cast iron table provides adequate support for many different-sized workpieces. The short end of the table is good for sanding small workpieces. Anyhow, if you're still reading this review, then what are you waiting for? If you've thought about buying a drum sander, then you've probably thought about using drum-sanding bits in your drill press. I decided against it because the bearings in the drill press are not designed for horizontal stresses. Believe me, you'll be putting horizontal pressure on your workpieces whenever you need to hog off a lot of material. Save your drill press, and buy a drum sander. If you want one that's a great value, get this little number while the gettin's good. The price has already gone up by $20 since I bought mine. I'm so pleased with it, now I'm looking at the whole WEN lineup for other tools I need. BTW - I wish I had considered a WEN drill press rather than the press I ended up buying from the other big box store.

An OK Sander for a price point unit
A few observations- I don’t think I shall be needing an oscillating spindle sander on a daily basis, ever. So, I ordered this unit, based on reviews, and price point. At this price, this is a pretty good buy, given what you get versus paid for. It’s obviously 100% China sourced. The packaging survived, the unit inside was protected by top and bottom styrofoam inserts which held up well, about 30 pounds ship weight. First off, the mandatory dust collection works really well! It’s a 1-1/2 OD inch port, so you will likely need to adapt it to whatever your shop is set up for. I have both 4 inch and 2-1/2 inch predominately, and a few adapters, so this wasn’t a problem. The owners manual specifies it must be used with dust collection! There are a number of questions in the reviews about noise, and this is a fairly noisy unit. If you have a Bosch Colt 1/4 inch router, there’s your comparison. The table is larger than I thought it would be, (bonus) it is cast iron, the balance of the machine is various types of plastic. The table is pretty rough on the sides, the top passes for smooth, it was very dirty when I got it. Performance wise, it does a decent job for what it it, the spindle is square to the table, and seems to have enough torque reserve to deal with most sanding situations. Internally, you will find a DC permanent magnet motor, being driven directly from a full wave diode bridge straight off the AC power line. I suspect this raw, brute force approach to powering the motor contributes a lot to the noise. It’s a mystery also that this got by the “power factor correction” mandates, but somehow this does. I have wrestled with the idea of removing the “guts” of this unit, and building a more substantial (and noise suppressing) base, powering it with a much more refined DC power supply. But the effort and expense would take me into the territory of “just purchase a better sander in the first place”. Dunno, if I need to use this thing a lot, I might do that, but right now, it did the one job I got it for pretty well, and will be a place holder on the shelves otherwise. For the $138 at the time I bought it, it was the right price for the solution I needed. This is priced less than the other comparable units, which likely have the same innards, table, etc. Forget the “on board accessory storage”, just put the various rings in a zip lock bag, then put the bag and the sanding drums and sleeves in a toolbox drawer or somewhere.

nice sander
I now have this Wen sander along with a Wen drill press and a Wen Jointer, all three products are solid as far as I am concerned. Yes there is better equipment out there, but everyone has their own budget and bang for the buck you cannot go wrong with Wen products, they work just fine for the average shop tinkerer.

Does a good job.
The sander does a good job and meets my needs. No vibration, and the oscillation is smooth. The metal surface is much nicer than plastic and aluminum at the same price. It's square and has done an excellent job with the larger drum diameter.

Excellent Buy!
Bought this sander out of necessity for a project and I have only used it a few times so far, but it's been great. Right out of the box, and straight onto the bench and started using it. Ran for at least a full hour on initial use and it was great. Super easy set up with just bolting the proper size sanding cylinder in place and sliding the paper over top, and boom, ready to sand! The sides have little slots for holding the extra parts and cylinders so everything stays together.

Great addition to my shop
I like the sensitivity of the sander. I do scroll saw work, sometimes with very small pieces of wood, and find I’m able to sand and shape them easily. This sander is light and easy to move when need be (my work area is quite small.)
