Very impressed!
To say that I’m impressed with this product would be an understatement. I’ve had it for just over a week and have used it every day. I’ve used a variety of food waste including coffee grounds, leftover meat scraps, citrus, vegetables, eggshells, bread / bagels, fruit, even some leftover cat food. It has worked wonderfully to “compost” all of it. I live in a rural area - yes…skunk, opossum, raccoon, fox, and bear. So, having a traditional outdoor compost setup just won’t work out. We have weekly garbage pick up but I was looking for a way to reduce some of that. Granted, it’s just my husband and me but I do a lot of cooking and 99% of the items I use are fresh and not processed / premade foods. I will say that the food “bucket” that you use for your scraps is on the small side so if you prepare your meals, as I do, with a lot of fresh ingredients and you have a family of four or more, you might not be as thrilled. On the occasions that I have more than I can process at a time I can run 2 cycles a day or just keep the scraps in a ziplock win the fridge until the next day. There is no foul odor. The filters do what they’re supposed to. The lid for the bucket works to contain odor as I fill it up during the day. Can’t even smell the onions or other strong odors as it sits on my counter. Once the composting is done, I dump it into a plastic bucket that I keep outdoors and when that gets full I will dispose of it on our property. There is no smell to it so it won’t attract any critters. Some folks have commented in their reviews that it’s noisy, foul smelling, it leaves a goopy / sludgy mess, or that it takes too long. It’s not loud, it doesn’t smell, you have to use common sense as far as what you put in to process, and who cares how long it takes. It’s not like you have to sit there and keep it company. The bucket has some type of lining / coating that’s almost like a nonstick surface. Cleaning it is a breeze. I simply wash it out by hand though it is dishwasher safe. The unit is a bit heavy to move around, though not impossible, so find a place that will be convenient so you don’t have to relocate it often. It isn’t huge but does take up counter space so find a location that works for you. My only negative is that though Vitamix has been around for many years, and certainly is a reputable company, the FoodCycler is made in China. Not happy about that. Overall, the unit is robust and well made. It is easy to use and works very well.

I Love this Composter!
I use this composter daily. I love being able to turn my food scraps into instant compost that I can sprinkle into the lawn for healthier soil. The main critical feedback I have for this item is that certain foods can turn into a solid brick, literally like concrete, that blocks the grinder’s natural rotation. This is compounded by the bucket and grinder design which make it nearly impossible to chop out the blockage. I’ve learned over time what types of items to avoid to prevent this; watermelon is a great example of a food to never put into food cycler. I’m not sure if the moisture or sugar content are the issue, perhaps a combination of both. I risked serious injury trying to remove those “learning curve concrete food item blockages” chopped out of that pot with a screwdriver, knives and other sharp metal objects. Not good, but despite those moments of frustration, it is still one of my favorite purchases. It is something I use daily which makes me feel good for how I am showing up for both people and planet.

Great for pre-compost
We live in northern MN, where we only get about 6 months to compost outdoors. I don’t need compost during the winter, so this was a great way to take care of our kitchen scraps in the cold months. Usually we fill up the compost bin every other day and have to trek in freezing (sometimes subzero temps) thru a foot of snow to get to our frozen compost pile outside… just to have it sit all winter. We’ve thankfully never have an issue with animals getting in, but it’s so slow to produce any true compost. I’ve had a Nature Mill indoor composter when we lived in California- made true compost inside- had to balance greens/browns or it would smell up. Also had some mold issues over time. But that made real compost. So, enter the vitamix food cycler. The Vitamix basically makes a finer ground up dried food product. I would not put this on top of any soil bed- once it gets wet, it’s basically bits of dried food. We place the inner bucket by our sink and throw the food scraps in there with the carbon-filter lid over it. At night, it’s usually filled to the line (sometimes over). Toss the bucket into the base on the floor where it’s out of the way, hit the power button and in the morning, we add the cooled product to the old compost stainless steel pail, which now lives under the sink. It now takes about 2 weeks of daily use to fill up the old pail (i think it’s a gallon size) then make the trek outside to our outdoor compost bin, and once it warms up, in theory, the compost will be ready sooner with smaller surface areas to degrade into soil. Oldest son is pretty happy since it was his chore to take the compost out. Prior to planting my veg garden, I plan to add this pre-compost to my hugelkultur raised beds- adding it deeper in the soil so it can break down over time. If I have actual compost ready, that can be added to the top layers to amend the soil from last year. At the end of the summer season, I’ll again add this to the soil and let it sit over winter to break down more. Noise level: pretty low. I did hear it one night and had trouble sleeping thinking we had left a television on or the sonos or something. Went downstairs and it was just groaning away. Mostly never notice it at all. Had some friends over for coffee and they thought my husband was, uh, having a rough time in the bathroom. Bwahaha! I did debate for some time getting a Lomi or a reencycle. But at the end of the day, I don’t need compost year round. I don’t want to run it for 21 hours or need to add any amendments, or want to deal with smells. It’s simple, clean, a nice design. I like the black, we like the company. It’s an expensive item for what it is, but makes our life easier.

My garden LOVES the compost from my FoodCycler and our trash is significantly reduced. BIG WIN!
The FoodCycler has removed virtually all food waste from our trash, significantly reducing both the volume and odour in our trash bin. Our garden is looking healthier and even our lawn is looking better in the areas I sprinkled the compost on, I left some without to actually determine what type of difference the compost was making. The FoodCycler can compost egg shells, fish and chicken bones but not the larger pork and beef bones. Coarse material such as flower stems, banana peels and melon rinds should be cut into about 1 inch chunks for best results and adding used coffee grounds to a "tough" load works great. The machine works best if there is a variety of "stuff" in it rather than all one thing. On the rare occasion food sticks to the container and is hard to remove, letting is soak for about 15 minutes full of water and a drop of dish soap has worked every time. Running a load with citrus peels in it will also clean it out. I use the FoodCycler daily and have even done 2 or 3 loads in one day when "harvesting" my garden and have lots of peelings. I love my FoodCycler!!

Be careful
Buyer be ware, this is for the US/Canada market, what it doe’s tell you, if you want to use in UK you need to buy a separate step down transformer.

Works great!
Works exactly as described. Super easy. Breaks food down to a great dirt texture. Looking forward to blending it in to our soil in the spring.

Doesn't work
For the money this is a big con. The machine clogs and doesn't do as described. I even half filled with very soft material but all the machine does is clog up and doesn't do anything. I was very disappointed with this machine and at its cost. It is very annoying that they say it does one thing but in reality it is just a big con. Update Since I have got this machine I have tried different ways to dehydrate and grind my kitchen waste and this machine is NOT up to the job. after 30 attempts one of which was just wilting lettuce but again every attempt the machine clogged up and didn't do anything but waste my time. It certainly does not do as it says on the box.

End product smells sweet
I was sceptical at first as I am an avid outdoor composter, but the compost doesn't do its thing in the winter so I bit the bullet and bought this. I love it! It is as quiet as the dishwasher and so long as you don't put too many moist scraps in it, it comes out wonderfully. If you do put too many moist scraps in there all at once, the end product is like a sticky paste, easy enough to clean up but best if you put a good blend of things in there. The end product even smells sweet, not like any compost I have ever encountered before. I can't wait to use it in the garden.
