I Extoll the Virtues Water-Based Satin Polyurethane
I have this old but beautiful wood endtable whose tabletop had gotten a little faded and dull looking over the years. I effortlessly revived it using nothing but a circular sander, some coarse grit sanding disk and one fine grit sanding disk, a fluffy towel (to brush off the sand), boiled linseed oil (to restore the attractive amber hue to the freshly sanded wood, and, yes, this magnificent SATIN-sheen water-based polyurethane. Why water-based? Because it's easy to work with, to clean up, and doesn't add any unneeded extra yellowing (why, let the boiled linseed oil do that!). Why the small container? Because the 8-fl-ounce size is perfect, from past experience if you let too much polyurethane remain in the trough where the circular lid top contacts you might accidentally permanently seal the remaining polyurethane in an 8-ounce-can tomb, so get two, one for your job and one for the next job in case the lid dries on. And why satin? Only SATIN beautifully matches the existing sheen of most finished wood (high gloss and semi-gloss impart a conspicuous shiny glass like coating that calls attention to the job and any imperfections in the wood, while flat is too cloudy and makes the wood look lifeless and dirty. Satin, satin, satin! A lovely product.

Not Great
I decided to try this product after I could no longer get Minwax's water-based Polycrylic shipped to me (presumably due to shipping restrictions where I now live). I have been using Polycrylic for several years and I absolutely loved it. I make tiny wooden trinket/ring boxes. I stain them with Minwax (oil-based) Jacobean and Ebony stains, which are a dark and a very dark brown, respectively. I have two complaints about this product: 1. Even after the thinnest coat I could possibly apply, this product does not dry crystal clear as advertised. It gives my boxes an overall grayish sheen giving them a cloudy look. I assume it is possible that it would not be noticeable on a lighter stain, but I would definitely suggest not using this product on dark stains (Minwax water-based Polycrylic does, however, dry crystal clear on dark stains). 2. The Satin finish... upon drying, it looks (and feels, strangely enough) even more matte than just the bare stained wood before applying it (and yes, I stirred it as instructed). An additional coat helped marginally but it was still a very matte finish, not what I would classify as "satin". I gave this product an extra star because it is easy to use, at least on very small projects such as mine. Unfortunately though, it ruined my batch of boxes.

Use Only Two Coats Over White Paint
I painted my upper kitchen cabinets with white chalk paint and finished them with this matte varathane. As you can see in the photo, the cabinet door only has two coats of varathane and the cabinet frame has about five coats. The door is bright white and the cabinet is off-white. I didn’t mind the off-white because it matches my tile backsplash and countertop. However one of the biggest complaints I’ve read online is yellowing in white paint. No yellowing shows at all when using darker colors like gray (see photo).

I wasn’t impressed with the small can or the consistency of the sealer/varnish
Please be aware that this is a very SMALL can. I should have read the description better before I bought this. I used this to seal 3 cabinet doors. This sealer/varnish is about the consistency of 2 percent milk. It’s very thin and runny and milky in color as you apply it. The milky sheen helps some with being able to see where it is being applied, however, the consistency made it hard to do the cracks and crevasses of the cabinet door...leaving pools of sealer. The next project I do, I will choose another sealer. I wasn’t impressed with this and had a few runs on my surfaces. I used this with rustoleum cabinet transformations kit instead of using the sealer in the kit. I did this because most people said the sealer In the kit is super fast drying and hard to apply. The sheen of the satin is not too shiny. I liked the finish, just not how the product applied.

Better than expected.
Goes on smooth with no brush strokes and no strong odour.

Much better than products made especially for polymer clay
I use this varnish for polymer clay, and it works perfectly without getting tacky! Much better than products made especially for polymer clay. The finish is matt, and if you give it about 3 layers it sets very strongly. It is also fine to use on polymer clay jewellery, seeing that it doesn't irritate the skin. Fantastic solution!

Seems to work great
Used this to cover my clay figurines with a UVA protection coat. Also gives them a nice gloss and shine. I really think this product works great.
