DIY install went well
Had an old manual humidifier that was broken and wanted to upgrade to the automatic humidifier. Debated between hooking up the cheaper model to my nest thermostat or spending the extra $40 for the automatic control board. After reading more I decided the automatic control board that was being sold was a better option than the nest. Install went smooth but I consider myself handy. I’m actually proud of this install and wouldn’t recommend it for most people. But if you want to know the details for what you’re getting into here you go: 1) the hole for my old humidifier in the return vent was smaller than this new units so I had to make the hole bigger and this sheet metal is harder to work with than I expected. I used my oscillating multi tool and it certainly was a pain. 2) I had to run 9 wires to the control unit. Was not expecting that. 3 went directly to the furnace electronic board. 2 wires rerouted the fan wire from the thermostat to the furnace board through the unit. 2 I had to run to the 24v transformer that came with unit. 2 I had to run a temp sensor outside (sensor was included) and connect to. 3) in order to run all this extra wire I had to goto the store and buy 25ft of thermostat wire. It was only 8 bucks but wish I knew ahead of time. The thermostat wire is just low voltage wire that is bundled into colored strands of five. 4) old duct work plugged right in without any problem. 5) old humidifier controller left a big hole in the vent and I used some of that metal hvac tape to cover the hole. I already had that but if you don’t you’ll probably want some. 6) had to drill a 3/4” hole into the return vent to mount the new controller. The hole creates a space for the back of the control board which has a sensor to read the humidity in your house. I had an old 3/4” hole bit and it was a pain to get through the sheet metal. If I didn’t have that I would have had to goto the store and buy one. It would be hard to use a small drill but or something like that. 7) it came with a new saddle valve that punctures the water line. I wasn’t expecting that because I didn’t buy the install kit extra. It was nice though because my old one was not working. 8) the outdoor temp sensor could be a problem for you. I was lucky to find an old hole where a phone line or something used to be and ran it through that. I really hate drilling through brick or mortar so if you don’t find a hole that already exists you’ll have that task ahead of you. 9) the instructions are really only going to give you an electrical schematic of how to run all these wires. I have a background in electronics so I was able to wire it quite easily but there is no step by step instructions to help you. 10) the 24v transformer was by far the most technical aspect of this. I had to use a screwdriver to remove one of those knock outs in the side of the furnace so I could mount the thing. Then run the hot and neutral wire into the junction box where the furnace turns on and off if you take off the panel. This is what you connect to your solenoid on the side of the humidifier to that tells it to turn the water on/off. There’s not even a mention of how to do this in the instructions lol. But it’s kind of on the wiring diagram. 11) after about four or five hours I had it installed. If I was a pro who did this all the time it would take probably two hours. I spent a good amount of time determining that I was in fact about to puncture a 3/4” hole into the return and not the other way around. 12) finally I realize the controller has a test setting. So I turn it to test and it sounds like everything is working. I hear the fan kick on and water flowing into the unit. Then boom an error code comes up on the display “r3”. Thought I had it on the first try. Googled “r3 error on humidifier” and it means that the unit has been left in test mode for more than 60 seconds. Thank god. Best error code I ever discovered. Hope this helps.

Whole home system > any portable!
First off this was a no brainers to buy a whole home system vs a portable that only does one room for half the amount. Yes you will spend double to triple what a small humidifier cost but this thing will control your whole house easily vs somthing that struggles to do one room. I purchased this humidity control system a couple months ago for how dry it gets in the winter and with a newborn who has delicate skin. It's been running without any issued and keeps our house at a constant 50% humidity. Not only does keeping moisture in the air through the winter improve/maintain health, it also said to help reduce the risk of sids. Installation was very start forward until I got to the wiring, which is the "most difficult" part of the instalation... it wasn't to hard to do, I watched a couple YouTube videos and relooked at the instruction and found that it was very painless and easy to wire. I have my system attached to our cold air return and pipe in warm air from the heat duct. This setup works great for me and Easily and quickly added moisture to our 2500 Sq ft house. I had the automated fan control turned on, but turned it off after realizing that just running room temp air over the filter pad wasn't really effective. Since turning it off, the system only pumps water while the furnace is running and that works great! No issues at all. I would recommend buying the installation kit for an extra 70 bucks... it will give you everything you need ezcept tin snips... although in my case the 3 foot 6 inch duct pipe it came with wasn't long enough for my exact set up, so I also ordered a 6 foot 6 inch flexible duct and a hose clamp. Attaching the flex duct to the heat duct off the furnace was easy with som tin snips and the male attachment it comes with, but ran into a little more difficulty with attaching it to the system and the pipe and system were both 6 inches, I used duct tape to hold it and that works perfectly fine... although an additional piece to fit the two together may be helpful, certainly not needed! Additionally keep in mind relative humidity and humidity are different. Our aprilaire display says 34% but our indoor humidity is 50% Hope this information treats you well!

The April Aire Model 500 is a great winter addition to my home!
In winter, I suffer from a dry nose that bled and my doctor recommended a humidifier. She said the small room ones really don’t do much (...and I can vouch for that). I searched on-line for the “best whole-house humidifier” and purchased the April Aire 500. Wow, I noticed a quick difference in how cozy the house air felt after turning it on! I liked this model because it has the Digital Automatic Humidifier Control. It assures that there is not too much Humidity based on the outside air temp. Too much can cause condensation in hidden places and ruin many construction materials. It has this nifty feature that not only adds humidity when heat is called for, it can be set up to also run the blower, without heat, to add humidity if the heat cycle isn’t enough, a really cool feature! I installed it myself but be aware it does require a few skill sets: sheet metal cutting, duct work, electrical, and plumbing. I have these skills, and it still took me a few evenings to complete (...maybe a bit longer than most as I am a perfectionist ????). I wanted the maximum humidity transfer, so I used the hot water line, but you can just run cold water. Also, be aware you do have to purchase some additional items to install it that depend on your particular set-up. A kit is available, but I went to the hardware store and purchased the necessary items for less. I did find that one small plastic piece had a broken flange, while it still worked, April Aire support was great and promptly sent a new one! Gundlb

Great humidifier
[Update] This is a good product. It works well. But note that it's not easy to install as a DIY. You will also need to purchase other material to complete the plumbing, electrical, and HVAC work. There is also the part of losing the guarantee if you DIY. This is a great humidifier but it is a lot harder to installed if DIY than the Honeywells you get at the local hardware store. It took me quite some time to figure everything out and get all the components. It doesn't come with wire so you will need to get wire to wire into the furnace, wire to wire all the low voltage connection, also a drain hose, 1/4 copper pipe, and an electrical box that can fit the transformer. The instructions are good but not that good, videos in YouTube are all different depending on who's installing it and what HVAC setup they have, but if you follow the directions you will be ok. The hardest part was figuring out where to installs the transformer. I ended up placing it in the electrical box that held the power switch to my furnace. The box didn't have any holes (knockout holes) to which I could thread the transformer into so I had to replace the whole switch box. The white wire of the transformer gets attached to the white cable in the box, the black wire of the transformer gets attached to the switch. You will also need to drill a hole into the wall to be able to install the outside temperature sensor. I did not use the saddle valve. So I bought a separate valve, 1/2 1/2, 1/4, some pex tubing, and rented a pex crimper to tap into the main hot water line. I had some 1/4 copper tubing for the connection between the valve and the humidifier. It just attaches with compression fittings.

Nice product
When I opened the package I saw everything that should be included in the box. So I read the section of unincluded items in the instruction and went to local hardware store to get all the parts needed. After getting everything I started the project. Cut the hole on the plenum then I opened the humidifier. Only then I saw the whole installation kit inside the humidifier! What a good surprise! So I ended up returning everything (except for the water supply line as the one in the installation kit is too short). Two trips to the local hardware store but it's worth it... Saved me 100 bucks. After this, I went to the product page again and didn't find any mentioning of the included installation kit. Maybe a few words like installation kid included should be added in the description. But at the end of the day, the product works great, so I'm giving it 5 starts.

It's suck
It is the worst things I ever bought the humidifier control is different from the instruction. I can get it working and you need to buy alot of other things to make it work Never and never buy again Please everyone don't buy this product

Working good!
We had our plumber install this humidifier on our furnace and it is working well, keeping the house humidity between 30 and 50 on the "furnace" setting. We can also put it on the "fan" setting and have it run if the furnace isn't.

Good but need to buy additional parts.
Excellent product but I wish they had the proper wiring and more length in flex pipe. Had to spend more money to complete install.
