Great tester!!
I've tested lots of wired equipment around our sanctuary and associated video equipment. The only con I have is that the battery cover at the bottom needs to be held closed sometimes by hand. Oher than that. Works fantastic, would buy again.

Even better than the one I'm replacing.
My previous cable tester, which by the way, I paid twice as much for finally bit the dust. Mackie is a name that I've known and trusted for years. In fact, I still own my original Mackie mixing board that I bought well over 20 years ago. So I knew I would be getting quality with this product. My only recommendation would be the battery holder seems to be somewhat touchy and doesn't always make firm contact. I noticed this same design flaw with my other tester as well. Other than that, spent most of the afternoon playing catch up on checking all of our old cables that had been lying around. Really please with this product, great price, great quality. Thank you.

robust build, but need better instructions
Rock-solid build quality with metal casing, although the battery compartment is weakly designed as others have also pointed out. The experience for first-time users could be improved; even though it's relatively straightforward to reverse-engineer how to interpret the LED light patterns with some trial-and-error testing, I think many customers would appreciate a walkthrough of how to interpret the LEDs, along with instructive examples of LED patterns that indicate that the cables being tested are bad. That said, despite these areas for improvement, I still give this product an overall 5 stars because the build quality is superb considering the price point, and the product does exactly what it claims to do.

Awesome
I should have bought this year's ago. No more wondering if mic or speaker chords are bad. Can even check chords with banana clip endings. I highly recommend it if your in a band.

It might fail if backed over with truck
Test equipment. Treat it nice. Do not back over it. Has tested every cable I tried in it. Great value. Done.

Battery compartment does not hold battery securely.
First impression of the tester was good. Without using it I noticed a problem with the battery compartment. When the battery is in place, itt is loose and not making firm contact inside the unit making the unit unreliable. The fix is easy by placing a piece of foam or cardboard to hold the battery in place. The next issue I noticed was three was no power on/off switch. This leaves the tester active all the time. Since i just received it 3/21 I am unsure of battery drain. I've only tested the continuity the the prices thus far.

Más mal hecho imposible
Sin opinar aún sobre el producto porque todos mis cables a día de hoy están en perfecto estado, acabo de abrirlo y el compartimento que acoge la pila es un rectángulo que dale del interior ,colocas la pila y lo vuelves a poner. Está construido con tan poco cariño que tiene holgura , la pila baila y hace y deja de hacer contacto, no hay forma de dejarlo fijo y que no baile , bueno pensando e inventando algo haré pero me parece una verdadera tomadura de pelo no saber construir una pestaña que dejé sólido el conjunto, es la primera vez que me pasa esto con una simple tapa de plástico que aloja las pilas , no sé si es made in chiná pero es que hasta las cosas madera in chiná las venden por 10 euros y ya sabes lo que hay , descontento , no lo devolveré porque la otra opción que hay de Harley Benton no mide cabes mono que son los que uso para la guitarra pero bueno ,no descarto devolverlo si no logro fijarlo yo , espero no romper nada en el intento , descontento , tengo pies de micro ,un accesorio que hace rápido el cambio de sistema de pinzas de micro increible ,cajas de inyección y cajas de phanthom y contento con todo eso, pero con este artículo ......me han sorprendido mucho , nada recomendable., no compraré nada más de esta marca, para que veáis lo alucinado de la mala gana en la constricción de la pestaña. Puedes creer que el cable está mal y es la pila que te vuelve loco...

Really good, really Bright!
It's great! I test all of my cables before every show, before I pack them up to go; I can't have some sound guy trying to blame my gear when it's clearly his shoddy unmaintained cables causing the problems. ???? I only gave it 4 stars because of the incredibly bright led's on the front; I mean they're almost blindingly bright. We're testing cables, not trying to make beacons to land planes. Continuity testing is a nice touch--highly recommend it; just wear your coolest sunglasses ????

Solid features for a great price
Solidly built and logically laid out, the Mackie Cable Tester gives you an easy way to test a wide variety of cable types (RCA, 1/4 and 1/8-inch TS/TSR, XLR, Speakon, MIDI/Din), and solve mysteries when you're not exactly sure what kind of cable you have (stereo vs. mono, for example) or suspect a faulty plug. Pop each end of your cable into one of the two identical side connections, then use the dial and the lights to cycle through the pins of the cable you've plugged into the two sides to see what you've got. The banana-plug/probe continuity tester is also a nice addition. More detailed instructions for the unit would be helpful, but it's a great tool for anyone who's frequently hooking up different audio components in the non-Bluetooth parts of the world.

Works as advertised
Could only test the XLR connections, and it works well. The unit is heavy, and seems well-built with painted thick steel shell (not aluminium). It uses a 9V battery. I am pretty sure this is a generic cable tester that Mackie has rebranded. The body, size, the location of sockets, knobs, LEDs is EXACTLY the same as you find all over the web on no-name or generic brands. So I know that I paid approximately 20-25% more, and I'm okay with it, with a conscious choice-supportive bias. (smiles) Its actually a pretty simple unit, with very simple components, just plain wires, some LEDs, a stopping knob, various types of sockets, a 9V battery holder, a simple PCB. It just closes circuits and it glows the LEDs. I actually managed to open the unit with 4 Philips screws and that's how I know it (don't care about the warranty of this one). You could make one yourself, but the cost of small quantity components would probably be not worth it. The components in the Mackie unit did not seem to be extraordinary, or even branded, except the speakon socket which is marked "LEQUN", which is not a brand I recognize anyway. If you find anything cheaper, there's no need to spend high on this one, they're all the same. Overall a useful purchase if you're into audio.

Clever design - works great - supports all the standard audio connectors
I had contemplated building my own cable tester, but it would have cost me four times the price of this item to just buy the parts. It has a clever design concept--it tells you which pin on the "input" connector is connected to which pin(s) on the "output" connector. You use the rotary switch to select which pins to test. There is a "GROUND" LED that lights if the selected pin is connected to chassis ground of the MTest device. However, with the exception of the MIDI connectors, all connectors are isolated from the chassis ground, so this function is basically useless. It would be really useful if it applied to the XLR connectors, as we'd really like to know if any of the three pins in the XLR are connected to chassis ground. But it seems they cheaped-out on the XLR connectors, as they are missing the fourth terminal that usually connect to chassis ground. I'm guessing that previous versions of the device may have used proper XLR connectors, which would have made this GROUND feature much more useful. Otherwise, I can't imagine why they would bother including this feature just for the MIDI connectors. The circuit diagram mis-labels the "GROUND" LED as being green, when it's actually red. Likewise, the diagram mis-labels the "BATTERY CHECK" LED as red, when it's actually green. The "text" instructions get it right though. Speaking of the LEDs, they are horribly, blindingly bright. I had to put a strip of electrical tape over them to make them tolerable. Anyway, considering the price and functionality, these are fairly minor complaints.
