gets the job done easily and effectively.
...................This is a simple tool with a simple use it is designed to touch any electrical device connected to a supposedly live wire itself and see if that device or wire is live and still powered up or not by using a red flashing light on the tip and an alarm buzz for an audio warning. I as with many other electrical diagnostic tools I bought this as a backup to other similar A.C. pen style voltage detectors I already own . this is not an overly complicated tool so this review will be simple and easy to understand......................................................................................................................................................................................................................Benefits of this tool. (benefit one) its obvious and main use detecting live current to electric wires or devices still connected to a live electric current that hasn't been disconnected at the main panel or some other source. (benefit two) this A.C. voltage detector has special feature that can be activated by pressing the orange button on the top of the detector that allows this tool to sense low voltage current down to as low as 24 volts this is especially useful on furnace or air conditioning work installing upgrading or replacing things like thermostats and other H.VA.C. style control devices as well as any device that uses 24 volt current A.C. (benefit three) this particular detector has a built in flashlight I think this is a cool feature but its not very bright and seems maybe more like a gimmick than a actual real usable feature. (benefit four) the fact that this particular detector uses traditional TRIPLE A.A.A. style batteries and not use the button cell style batteries that another GARDNER BENDER brand detector model that I also own uses instead of the triple A.A.A. style used by this Extech detector. ...................................................................................................................................................................................................................... Drawbacks to this unit. (drawback one) as I have stated before I think the flashlight all though a good feature is a little lacking. ( drawback two) the type of alarm noise this detector makes when being used this detector makes a continuous alarm noise rather than an alarm noise that flutters or chirps. this is not in my opinion is not a bad feature but I personally like the chirpy fluttery alarm noise used by other similar types of detectors on the market like my GARDNER BENDER model but understand this is just a personal preference and not a defect issue on this product. the only other type of feature this detector could use is a sensitivity adjustment control but this really isn't necessary on a tool this inexpensive or simple but it is a feature found on more expensive pen style voltage detectors and voltmeters that have non contact voltage detection built in like the extech model 381676 digital multimeter and non contact voltage detector which I also own as well...................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... in final this is a perfectly acceptable tool for its use and it gets the job done effectively and simply. with only a few very minimal drawbacks it is perfect for the professional or the everyday home user or handyman and it is offered at a very competitive price point too which is very helpful and important as well.

Excellent, adjustable ver high sensitivity, nothing really like them for the price. Couldn't live without the DV30 or the DVA30
I actually have both this DV30 and the DVA30 which detects both voltage and current. Both these tools are excellent, even indespensible, if you do any electrical work which might include tracing wires through walls. There are very few adjustable sensitivity voltage dectectors in this price range and the adjustment control is needed since these units are very very sensitive (which is what you want!) If all you are doing is checking to see if an exposed wire or terminal is hot, these tools are probably overkill and too sensitive. Better to get one where you are have to touch the wire or terminal like one of the Southwire or other units. Sometimes more is not better. However, if you want to detect or trace hot wires through walls, these units are the way to go and to do better you would have to spend much more (like one of the Amprobe tracers, which I have, which can be very expensive although when you need it, you need it.). These Extech units are good for interior use, detecting through sheetrock walls, etc., but not necessarily best for tracing wires underground (although they would work in some circumstances). In addition, the wires have to be hot (although you could impress, say a 24 ac voltage, for detection purposes if you are comfortable doing that sort of thing. DV30 only detects voltage, which is likely all you need, where the DVA30 can also detect current flow which is useful in special situations since the current detection is even more sensitive (but current has to be flowing which requires a complete circuit, not just have voltage present which just needs a hot wire). I personally like the DV30 since the control dial is easier to use and it has a pilot light to tell you that it is on. I have left on my DVA30 too many times only to find the batteries dead when I go to use it. They need to add a pilot light to the DVA30. In addition, both testers should have an led light at the tip to illuminate your work (although you could tape a small penlight to the sides, not elegant, but ok). Lastly, I'm an EE and have been using various electrical instruments for over 50 years, so I know a good one when I see one.

The product works well but you need to understand how to use it
Products like this act like a Geiger counter. You turn the sensitivity up/down while away from voltage and test against known sources to get into calibration for your present environment. You will also need to recalibrate occassionally as you use it. You can then listen for increased sound around voltage and current runs. You also need to be cognizant of static electricity, don't rub it against wals or otherwise subject you or it to static. I was successful behind 3/4 old style 60 year old concrete style drywall, similar to 2 layers of cement board. I could trace out circuits behind walls well. I just solved a difficult problem thanks to this tool. Again there is some trial and error and recalibrate on. There is no renovation/remodler style product that exists that will achieve tracing wires behind walls without this kind of trade off in calibration and trial and error as you run it across walls. If you are uncomfortable with that process, your only option is to open the wall up or somehow guess at it-- this and any other product like it will not satisfy you. In my opinion the product is in fact better than the cheaper ones-- it is more adjustable, built a bit better, and it has current sensing which does work well and is innovative. In my opinion the product is underrated and deserves more reviews from people that understand it.

Extech DVA30 Non Contact Current and Voltage Detector
I use this tester every day...

Too sensitive at the lowest level of the range adjuster.
Overall a good product but the sensitive range is too high. Even setting it at the lowest level its too sensitive to voltage detection. Also In India this product is marketed at printed MRP of Rs1586/- approx but is being sold higher than MRP.

This is a great tool, works really well and reliably detects
This is a great tool, works really well and reliably detects. It is very sensitive on the highest setting but you quickly become used to turning it down a bit, testing it on a live circuit then check the circuit you want. The reason I only gave it a 2-star rating is that the ON/OFF button broke after a couple of months rendering it useless! :(

Fantastic.
Works a treat. Had a number of line testers over the years, and this one by far is the best in regards to build quality and reliability. The only draw back is it can be easy to knock the on button if it's in your pocked etc. Also it's kind of a shame when you turn it on it is always at the highest sensitivity as opposed to the lowest but that's just me being picky.

only tested it so far. The sensitivity appears to be way too high because I can turn it to max without being near to any electrical current and it gives a positive reading.

The adjuster gives so much more control
Great piece of kit, can fine tune to rule out interference
