Know the wiring, and take time to read the instructions;
take time to read and reread the instructions, it can get a bit confusing as it took me time to program the unit; but; after it is done to your liking, the thermostat does its job in maintaining the temp. the backlit display is a nice feature and i wanted a thermostat that kept the hours for filter change. (Nice that it allows you to set your hours of run time) As with all replacement items, see if it will come close to covering your existing thermostat location; if not, you know what you will have to do.

Instructions for wiring poor- blew fuse on AC
Overall it seems to be OK, though I have not tried to program yet. The instructions for the wiring need work. I ended up blowing a fuse on my AC unit and had to run around town looking for a fuse. Here's the problem with the instructions. It tells you to label your wires and gives you a nice little chart. If you have a B wire it's says to label it a B. I made the assumption that that meant it should be connected to the B connection. Wrong! After finding a good YouTube video I discovered that I should not be connecting my blue wire to B. Instead it should be connected to C. I panicked initially when my AC unit did not work at all anymore. It's 100 degrees here. Took me a while to figure and find where the fuse was on my AC. My advice would be to locate your fuse and have a replacement handy in case you goof this up before you try to install.

Solid unit. Great value.
I replaced an old analog Honeywell thermostat with this unit. I appreciate the 5-1-1 programing versus the 5-2 I had in my previous home as my Saturday and Sunday schedules are quite different. Installation is somewhat complicated, as it requires you to identify your existing wiring with tags (included). However, the instructions are straightforward enough that your average DIYer would be up for the task. Unfortunately, they didn't cover the situation I had with a very old 2-wire system (most people probably won't have this issue). I was able to find out what I needed to do online (red wire went to RH, black to W for those in the same boat). Once the wiring is done, the unit is attached to the wall with screws and anchors (included). Then you simply install 2 AA batteries (not included) and snap the faceplate back on. The manual then guides you through the initial setup process which requires you to program 8 different options. Once that is complete, you can begin using the unit. It comes with a pre-programmed schedule, but you can program it to your own needs fairly easily (four periods per day Mon-Fri, Sat and Sun).

Very basic model for simplest single stage system, very basic programming, poor instruction booklet
I got this to replace old dial thermostat for my 2-wire boiler system. It is probably one of the cheapest programmable thermostats. Installation is hindered by a less-than-clear instruction booklet and the labels for the wires are microscopic-sized lettering on the unit. The instruction book should provide a better diagram with the terminals more prominently labelled. From prior knowledge, I wanted to look for instructions to have slower cycle times, in which you cut a wire on the circuit board. This instruction is only found in the trouble-shooting section of the instruction booklet. There are some other options available by cutting some wires, not adequately shown in instruction booklet. Programming is very basic, 4 temperature changes per day for 5 weekdays, 4 temperature changes per day for 2 weekend days, separate programming for heat vs cool, that's it. The internal clock is not very accurate, is off time by a few minutes after a few months. When the heat clicks on or off, the unit makes a fairly audible "click," if this was in a bedroom I would think you would not like it.

Well-designed product
This product is a reasonably-priced option for automating your heater usage and making it more targeted. We are using it with an incredibly basic, 20-year-old propane wall-mounted furnace. Previously, it had no "bells and whistles", it was turned on or turned off manually or came on when the room temperature got down to what the old thermostat was set at. The installation booklet is pretty easy to understand, but our old wiring was so basic it didn't match the examples in the booklet. So I'd like to mention how amazingly helpful Emerson's tech people are! I called with a question on a weekend afternoon, and a real live person answered right away. She understood my description of the problem, she clearly explained what to do, and helpfully answered some follow-up questions, too. These days, that's a rare occurrence, unfortunately. Thank you, White-Rodgers/Emerson!

Costs More Money Than It Saves
I bought this thermostat to replace a non-programmable one to save money on heating bills. Unfortunately, it has done the exact opposite. First, in the four months since I've owned it, I've had to replace the batteries twice, whereas I only had to replace the batteries once in two years in my previous thermostat. Second, and most egregiously, I came home this week to find the batteries had died while I was at work and the thermostat had consequently left the furnace running all day non-stop. It was well over 90 degrees in my house even though the thermostat had been set for 68 degrees. Given the cost of gas, that day of turning my home into a sauna is going to cost me everything the thermostat saved over the four months and then some. I would return this product, but I have passed the return window by about a month. I certainly don't want another one of this thermostat, as I might get--possibly after paying shipping--if I pursue the warranty, so the thermostat has been nothing but a money pit.

Great value
So easy to install. Instructions were clear and to have some control over your thermostat/furnace/AC unit is nice. Especially if you don’t have the ability for an expensive WiFi controlled thermostat. Easy to program and make temporary adjustments if you are home when the thermostat is in a higher setting than you prefer.

Great value.
Great for a basic programmable thermostat. I’ve had it installed for about 5 weeks and no issues. Great customer support also. Easy install.
