Nice addition for a dart cabinet

I built a dart cabinet so I needed a Cricket scoreboard. This one is good quality at a great price.

Works as Intended …

Looking for a “standard” dart scoreboard (for Cricket and 01 games), I took a chance on the VIPER CHALK SCOREBOARD. None of the reasonably priced scoreboards I was looking at were reviewed favorably, but I took a chance on the Viper board and I found it to be a worthy purchase. WHAT YOU GET It is important to know that you are not getting a slate chalkboard, but a chalkboard surface/mat on a sheet of press board. I opted for the large board (23.5" H X 15.5" W). The board came with 4 drilled holes (one in each corner) for mounting. Attached to the bottom is a small wooden tray to hold chalk. In addition to the board, you get a few sticks of white chalk and an “eraser”. HOW IT PERFORMS While the board is somewhat thin, it is not flimsy. Because I was mounting the board to a slab wall, I had to drill the holes wider (to handle the Tap Con screws). I was worried using the drill might crack, chip or fray the board, I had no issues. I have read numerous reviews about the inability of the board to take chalk, but I had no such experience. I think the reason is that chalkboard needs to be seasoned before regular use. I seasoned the board by shading it completely with the side of a chalk stick, erased the board and repeated the process a few more times. After doing this, the once shiny/slick surface was gone and the board was ready for use. The only issues I had with this board were with the accessories: the chalk itself is low quality and the “eraser” is simply a small, thin strip of textured material that is hard to hold when erasing (it is also hard to keep in place on the chalk tray). Honestly, for what this board costs, it’s well worth the value. I tried downloading a scoring app on my phone and it was a complete pain to use (playing with the phone after each set). Not to mention, part of the fun of playing darts is chalking up those “Os” and “Xs” after throwing (or showing your math skills if playing 301/501). If you season the board surface before using (and splurge on better chalk), the board should work as intended.

Good board.... if you buy separate chalk and eraser.

So I was on the fence buying this for what was probably way too long. It seemed to be exactly what I wanted, for the price I wanted, but I kept reading the terrible reviews about how no chalk worked well on it. So eventually I gave it a try. And I will say that they ship it in a plastic bag in a padded envelope. So I understand why people say they received their item damaged. Mine was delivered with no problems. I read the reviews saying to “season the chalkboard” by basically taking chalk, laying it on its side, covering the whole board with a coating and then erasing it. So I did that 3-4 times and tried to write on it. It worked.... but not very well. So I just mounted it to the wall and figured that’s what it was. However I ordered new chalk.... and that’s absolutely what the issue is. The new chalk wrote perfectly. And if you’re this far in, it’s worth it to buy a normal eraser too. The “eraser” they send is a rectangle cut of thick felt. So that’s it, great chalkboard if you don’t mind buying a separate eraser and chalk. Just throw the chalk they send with it right in the garbage. Also side note.... the screw caps pictured in my photo, do not come with the board. But for $1 or whatever for the set, I think it classes it up, instead of seeing screw heads.

It’s okay...but expect damage during shipping.

I give this 4 stars mostly because it’s inexpensive. I can almost guarantee you that yours will come shipped with some damage. This is because it’s a pretty thin (and long) board and Amazon only uses a bubble wrap envelope. Mine came with a bad crack in the upper left where the screw goes in. See photo. I didn’t bother returning because it was pretty cheap. But I’m still kind of disappointed. As far as function, it’s a good board. People complain that the chalk doesn’t write but mine is fine. I seasoned the board by covering it multiple times with chalk using the side of the chalk. No issues. I actually prefer chalk to dry erase for the following reasons: 1) it looks vintage, 2) it’s cheaper, and 3) it’s much quicker to just pick up chalk and mark the board than it is to pull off marker, remove cap, mark, return cap to marker, then stick back on board. It would be a hassle to do that every turn. That’s why the chalk board is the way to go. If Amazon could just get these shipped out in good condition, I’d give it 5 Stars. Overall I’m satisfied but not happy.

Get what you paid for.

It works for what you need but the chalk came busted so buy extra! Might be worth it to do erase board instead

Workable

This board is ok but not a good quality finish as the chalk doesn’t wipe off very easily. But it can be easily cleaned with a little moisture. The chalk brush they gave you is not a brush at all, it is just a price of thicker cloth. Two pieces of chalk are included but one was already broken in shipping.

It's decent, gets the job done and the size is appropriate. However, there's certainly room for design and handling improvement. Both chalks arrived broken in half and were not well protected with cushioned packaging. The wooden holder is terribly designed because it barely holds the chalk. The ledge and groove are way too small and it's quite easy for the chalk to fall off it not very gingerly placed. One of the corners of the chalkboard was curved outward a bit so the board doesn't sit flat on the wall. The curve was significant enough that it pulled out my supporting nail from the drywall after I had tried to nail down all 4 corners to make it flat.

Poor quality

It was almost impossible to write on with chalk that came with it. It was a little better with other chalk however still very difficult. We decided to use liquid chalk and it did not erase even when trying to clean off after each game.

Excellent score boards

I bought two of these for a dart cabinet project and they look great and perform excellent. I never tried the chalk provided but the chalk we have works great. No seasoning required!
