Doesn't work well for my Crippled mother

I think that for many people this item has the potential to work pretty well depending on their age, medical condition and strength. However, in the case of my crippled and elderly mother it's not so great and she doesn't even use it. My mother is very short (under 5 feet now due to her illness), crippled and not terribly strong. Due to her age and condition I am always right there to assist her should she have any trouble or slip - I'm a bit on the paranoid side when it comes to my mother's safety and well being. Despite the ability to adjust the straps, she finds it difficult and uncomfortable to grasp to assist her in entering or exiting the vehicle. It just moves around too much for her. She actually prefers to grip the door frame itself as she gets into or out of the vehicle and has completely given up on the product. I must also question the recommended positioning of this product on a window frame. Although it may work in some cases, it could potentially be a hazard if the window is not fully closed and can become annoying at times while driving. I probably should have returned the product before the return window expired, but I kept it installed in my vehicle during the time it took me to move her and part of her household almost 1000 miles after my father had died. I kept it installed as a possible backup thinking that it might work out for her over time, but this did not turn out to be the case.

Useful For Various Reasons...

I ordered this item when I knew I was going to have back surgery and I was searching for products that would help make my recovery easier. I could tell that having something in the car to hold on to for help getting in and out of the car would be very useful. So I ordered it and my husband installed it before picking me up from the hospital. It came in handy right away because I left the hospital with severe muscle spasms in my lower back. It took my husband and an orderly 15 minutes to get me from the wheelchair into the car because the spasms were so bad and happened so frequently. I honestly don't know how I would have gotten in without this to hold on to. It also helped to hold it on the way home because even though my husband tried to drive slower and avoid bumps, it was still hard to stay stable and upright. The strap is very strong and the handle is comfortable. I have found this has an additional use as well. I also have Fibromyalgia. My neck and shoulders get very uncomfortable when riding in the car. I often hold on to the handle in our SUV that is over the window - not only for stability but also because it helps to relieve pain and pressure in my should/neck and arm. The car caddie is an excellent addition to that handle because it hangs down lower, giving me another option when reaching higher gets uncomfortable. For that reason, I plan to keep this in my car from now on. There is, for me, one glitch though. I gave this product four stars because I really like it a lot. However, it is sometimes difficult because I am not the only person who sits in the passenger seat. My teen daughter sits there as well, and when she does, she obviously doesn't want this hanging next to her and blocking her view out the window. So she tucks it up under the sun visor. I thought that was a clever idea until the day I was a passenger and the sun was in my eyes so I lowered the visor and this swung down in my face!! It's more annoying than anything when it happens, but for some reason I just can't remember that it's going to happen so unfortunately it wasn't only the one time. Embarrassing, I know. I think this could easily be a full-on five star product if they just put a little hook on it up near the top to hold the handle in place when not in use, or something to that effect. If the product already comes with a solution for this issue and I'm just not aware of it, I would be more than happy to know about it and add that extra star in if it resolves my issue. Regardless of that one thing, however, I still think it's a great product and I am still keeping it in my vehicle. It really is so helpful for all of the reasons I mentioned!!

Next best thing to a helping hand.

I have purchased this item twice. It arrived quickly both times. I like this product so much that I only deducted one star for it breaking after three years. My mom used it almost daily and she is not a small woman. It was also installed in her black car, in the heat and cold of Tennessee. The price is so reasonable and the product is so helpful to my mother, I wouldn't mind if they only lasted a year. It is well made and easy to install. You roll down the car window and wrap it around the top frame of your door. then snap it in place. Then close your window and adjust it according to your needs. It is very well made, yet the strap is thin enough to allow the car window to go all the way up. There is no gap that would give a thief easy access to your car. I would highly recommend assisting an elderly person or with anyone with bad balance to install and learn how to use. It needs to be in the correct place to work safely. When adjusting for individual needs, you can easily pull the door closed on yourself or injure your arm/shoulder when using it. Also, it takes some testing to utilize it in the best manner. If it isn't in the right place, it can actually make it harder to get in and out of the car. You also have to adjust the length to allow enough reach without the caddie hitting the driver in the face or obscuring your vision while driving. (You could remove it and place it back each time you needed it. I would recommend marking the spot to reinstall it. You can't get the best use of the product if it's not in the correct spot). When installed correctly, you actually use the top of the door frame to pull yourself in an upward motion when exiting your car. It is this pulling upward motion that allows you to lift or hold yourself without slamming the door on yourself. When entering your car, you can steady yourself with a bit more fluid movement as you are using it to close your door as well. Once it is in place and you have gotten used to the body mechanics of using it, you will find it to be a tool that you can't live without. My mom may not be able to continue to drive if she didn't have the Stander Car Caddie.

A good idea, but didn't really help my Dad as he doesn't have much strength in his arms (as well as his legs) to pull himself up with.

Strong and helpful

Great for getting in to my van if it is wet or my boots are muddy so you could slip. Also amazing for my mum who is disabled to get in and out of her car. I have it attached to the middle head rest in my van and works a treat really strong and sturdy.
