Hmmmmm anoerobic/anoxic bacterial growth?
Been using this for about 2 months now in two different tank and 3 different filtration Methods. I should start by saying I contacted seachem directly asking the best use for this media for reducing nitrates as this was the reason I bought it. Thier answer was to keep flow under 50gpm. I placed this in a reactor running 20gom flow while also putting some in a hob running 60gph as well as laying some in the bottom of the tank like substrate and also have some in a canister filter running around 350gph. After all this time I’ve seen zero reduction in nitrates. I will admit I’m using this on highly demanding tanks way overstocked with cichlids. If it’s going to show nitrate reduction it should be here. On one tank alone at one point I was using around 2l in a canister filter, 1l in a reactor and another 1l sitting at the tank bottom. I’ve yet to see any benefits. I will admit I’ve added a few fish during this time but it honestly has not changed my nitrate ppm amounts at all and I monitor and record all my water persmiters daily to the point I can tell you what foods are cleaner then others.. I even went as far as carbon dosing sugar. Let me tell you in a freshwater tank carbon dosing is bad! I run plenty of air stones so o2 was never an issue... what was was having to clean all filters weekly cause of all the extra mulm created. (To those not familiar with what mulm is it’s mostly dead bacteria that you see as a red slim inside your filters when you service them) the amonts went up 10000x with carbon dosing to the point I even had a filter completely clog and fail to flow which I didn’t notice for a couple days which then later crashed that tank cause it killed off most of the BB while it wasn’t flowing water. I was able to fix this in 2 days thankfully with massive 90% water changes and some B.B. suploments I purchased. I was very thankful this worked cause I was sure I was going to be doing massive changes daily and still lose most of my fish. I’ve now transitioned to regular matrix and experiementing with that. My original though was the bigger pond matrix pieces would be much better suited to nitrate reduction bacteria cause it is much denser meaning it should hold more. However seachem claims the same results at normal flow rates with matrix. I have a couple months left to go on this one but I’ll surely be posting my results in that claim as well. To date after testing many many high grade media’s if personally found zero difference between any of them and the basic cheap $5 per bucket ceramic media sold everywhere. In fact I can’t even say they are any better then regular old filter sponges tbh. At least while nitrifying they provide mechanical filtration as well. Much more then I can say for this product. Bottom line they claim 1l will filter 100g if memory serves.. I put 4l on a 60g grow out tank and have seen no difference. Infact I would even go as far to say the tank is worse then it started as I’m maxing the filters out and don’t have room for my chemipure anymore.

Good product
I have been a fan of matrix and pond matrix for many years. My family recently bought a home with an existing 600gal pond. The pond was overstocked (20+ fish) and did not stay very clear even with weekly water changes. I added 4L of pond matrix to my waterfall overflow. Technically the instructions call for 1L per 100gal, but I already had a pressure filter on the pond. The pond began clearing up in just several days. I was expecting more time before seeing results, but I was pleasantly surprised. My nitrates are not 0, but are staying

Good Stuff
It works. I know its called Pond Matrix, but I use it for my 55 gallon aquarium because I liked the larger size bits over the smaller sized bits in the regular Matrix . I used all of it in the top 2 trays of my Perfect (SunSun) 403B canister filter. You also have to remember that this doesnt do anything by it self. Its just media for benificial bacteria to colonize. I did a fishless cycle with a bottle of Tetra Safe Start Plus, and a dosage of Ace Hardware janitorial strenghth ammonia and it started cycling within a week. By the third week I added some fish and now I'm going into the 3 month and its still going strong so I know the bacteria has settled in nice and comfy on and in the Pond Matrix. I wouldn't recomend this for HOB filters though (unless its one of the bigger 70 or 110 sizes maybe) I would go with the regular matrix in this case, but this is perfect for Canister Filters, Sumps, and whatever filters ponds use. Now if only the Diatomes would leave....

Nitrate is GONE!
I have been using Pond Matrix in my reef system now for about six months. I grow corals for future sale , and need to have extremely low nutrient levels in my water. Pond Matrix promotes the growth of huge quantities of NITRIFICATING and DENITRIFICATING bacteria. My nitrates were running consistently at about 40ppm , and I needed to get them down to as close to zero as possible . In my search to find the ideal way to reduce nitrates naturally , I came across Pond Matrix , so I ordered a 4liter bucket and placed it in my filter. At first , I thought that I had wasted my money. My nitrates didn't go down at all for the longest time. However , I left it in my filter and continued to maintain the aquarium as I would normally ,with regular testing . After about 10 weeks , I noticed the nitrate dropping like a rock. After 12 weeks ,I no longer had any detectable nitrate! I feed my fish and corals now without fear. My corals look amazing and grow like weeds. My fish are fat and happy. I am very pleased by the results that I have gotten with Pond Matrix , I recommend it to anyone trying to control their nitrate levels ,or anyone with an aquarium or pond.
