More support than a foam pillow
I personally like the feel of this type of pillow compared to foam or feathers. Your head does not sink down into the pillow as much as it normally would with foam or feathers, so you don't get the cradling effect that those materials provide. It allows you to support the areas of the head and neck that you want supported. It feels like you are getting a gentle skull message when sleeping and this is a very nice effect. The pillow is smaller than standard. I insert this pillow sideways into a standard size pillowcase and fold the remaining case underneath. This gives a little more rigidity to the pillow and lets you form the pillow to your liking. It is definitely worth trying this type of pillow if you are looking for more head neck support. You may need to also get used to the sound of sleeping on Rice Krispies!

Good, but not perfect
My first buckwheat pillow and overall I like it. It does take a little getting used to though, not like it will keep you up, it's just mildly awkward before you fall asleep. I have a feeling I will figure out the proper method of shaping it one of these nights, but after a few weeks I'm still trying to find it. I like a roll under my neck, but if you try to shape it like you would an ordinary pillow the shells pile up behind the roll so you don't end up with a roll. So I kind of try to roll it, then push what's behind the roll out of the way, which works okay. But it's not like you lay on it and go 'wow, this is comfy' it's more like you keep trying to find out the perfect way to shape it, which I will keep doing. The quality of sleep is excellent, it has helped me to zonk out for a few high quality hours every night. Recommended. Edit: I see reviews mentioning the sound, I don't have that issue, it does maybe rise above the sound of an ordinary pillow, but it's not a detractor by any means I am finding simple ways to shape it more easily, again overall it's an improvement in sleep quality Recommended

Not as full as I would like
I just got the pillow quickly and am excited to sleep good. Anyway it's very flat and not full enough for me so I decided to order more buckwheat filling from Walmart which made it more expensive. It's close but not quite high enough for me as is. It should be easy to fix. I just wasn't expecting that. It would be okay as is because I can squish it together to be thicker and it doesn't move a lot. Also, I will want to put a different pillow case on it because it feels scratchy on my face because I prefer to sleep on my side. That will be very easy too because I have that already. Update. I am trying it again and like it a lot. Very relaxing.

Great for support
I would say this is not perfect, but I wake up with much less neck pain than when I was using a memory foam pillow. You may be shocked at how deflated the pillow seems, but this is by design I think. When laid flat, I would say it's half the size of a standard pillow, but can be shaped, and tends to keep the shape. I only had one night where I didn't shape it to fit completely under my neck and woke up with stiffness/soreness. It makes a crackling noise when you move, so keep that it mind. Some may find it too loud. There may be better options out there, but for my needs, this works perfectly. As many others have stated, a standard pillow case will be very loose on this, but still works just fine. After using this pillow, I don't think I'll ever use memory foam again.

Smaller than you think it is
It's nice and comfy, I can't take that away from it. But it's definitely not "standard" size like it says. I tried 3 different "Standard" pillow cases for it, each from a different brand and they were all way too big. I even thought maybe the cases I had were just stretched out or something and ordered more cases, nope.. still way too big. And that's on all dimensions, and not just by half an inch or so, so that it's relatively close. If I put the pillow smack in the middle of the case, there's about 2+ inches on each side of space. And then from the bottom of the pillow to the bottom of the case there's about 6-8 inches of free space at least. So in an experiment I was able to put 3 of these pillows in 1 "standard" pillow case before it was snug fit. This thing is really comfy but it's way smaller than you think/ than they say it is.

Didn't like, revolutionize my sleep or anything. But it's one of my best pillows
I'm a hopeless insomniac who wakes up uncomfortable several times a night most nights. I'm always experimenting with new pillows and mattress, and always it turns out to be in vain. This pillow was no different. When my body starts to get sick of it, it feels like a rock. But until that night inevitably comes as it does with all pillows for me, it's supremely comfy. During this process of using all kinds of pillows, I can say this pillow is one of the best I've tried. it's surprisingly comfy considering it sounds like little more than a glorified bean bag, keeps your head in one place, etc. If you're having trouble getting a decent night's sleep like me, it's worth a try. I hope you have better luck than I did.

Neck pain eliminated!
Give it a few nights to get used to the slightly crunchy sound. However, once I got used to that and how to "use it" (you kind of have to nestle your head each night to shape it) I'll never use another pillow again. OCCASIONAL NECK PAIN IS GONE!!!! Have not woken up with any neck pain since swapping and it's been a couple months now.

interesting pillow
I wasn't familiar with this kind of pillow but I do really like it. Get used to a different style of pillow, but the support is really great

Not a positive experience
The pillow has not been positive in my experience. I actually have more neck and shoulder pain now using this pillow. The pillow was not very big and thick when it arrived as per the reviews. So I actually bought two to fill one pillow so it had more fill. I wake up a few times at night because the fill has moved and the pillow has flattened. I readjust it to get the comfortable height and support under my neck as per the instructions that came with the pillow. I’m not giving up yet and hope the pain is just a matter of getting used to the new pillow. But so far I can’t recommend the pillow.

The perfect pillow!
Background story: I had shoulder pain for years because I bench pressed too hard and my friend didn't catch the bar on time and my shoulder gave out. I tried massotherapy, chiropractic treatment and shoulder exercises/stretches, as well as rest to solve my problem. Nothing really worked and I knew that I just needed a good pillow to support my neck until it recovered properly. I tried numerous pillows to solve this issue and this is the only pillow that actually cured my shoulder/neck pain after a single night's use! The following days have been even better, surprisingly. It is smaller than I expected, but I like it because I can get closer to my wife at night to cuddle her and not worry about having a pillow covering her face when I get closer to her. It also gives room for our cat to join us ???? Definitely get this pillow. I sleep on my side and sometimes my back. I did not regret my purchase at all! No smell, very comfortable and it got rid of my shoulder/neck pain! It's more affordable than surgery, so it's worth the price

There’s a reason that this is still the most popular material for a pillow in Japan.
I actually bought this pillow to replace a Tempur-pedic pillow which has been leaving my neck sore. Yes in terms of size it’s rather small, but it does exactly what it supposed to do. Proof that size doesn’t matter, but quality and material certainly does. I’ve been sleeping on this pillow for the last two nights and I wake up with no neck pain no shoulder pain and feel relaxed all day long. I’m rather impressed at the job it especially in comparison to the rather pricey pillow it’s replaced.

Best pillow for me
I had been using buckwheat pillow in the past 10 years and this is my third one. I live in a humid tropical climate so after some years, the natural material like buckwheat can become moldy and needs replacement. And that happened to my older one so I threw it away. Before this pillow arrived, I temporarily used other kinds of pillows I had (goose down, polyyester, etc) and had terrible neck pain when I woke up every morning. Once I got the buckwheat pillow, the first night I slept soundedly for 9 hours. Since then no more neckpain. For people who never use this kind of pillows, it may take a while to get used to the noise it makes when one tosses and turns, but after a while, you won't notice it and cannot use other kinds of pillows.

Comfortable !
I bought this pillow to pair with another Sobakawa pillow I bought about a decade ago. Unfortunately, I thought I was buying same sized pillow as my old one but ended up buying the standard (cushion) sized one which is about half the size of my old pillow. Fortunately, I bought 2. So it all works out. If you wish for larger sized pillow please order the queen . My old Sobakawa is a hefty 5kg pillow but gives me solid and soundless sleep. This new one is a mere 3Kg (2x1.5kg), feels almost as comfortable but is a bit noisy to the rubbing of the husks. It may take me a while to get used to it .
