Lightweight
Being lightweight is wonderful. Makes it easy to use. Sands paint off old posts well. Easy to find belts for. Great price. Love the light that tells you when you are pressing too hard.

Seems sturdy but dusty and the belt is questionable
See the photo. Is this what it is supposed to look like new? I have not used it and did not order a refurbished unit. Why the sawdust on the machine and why does the belt look used?

Disappointed
Bought the sander a little over two weeks ago. It was used to prep my deck for repainting...admittedly a tough job. It worked well except for two issues: (1) The continuous run button became intermittent after a few days, finally progressing to total failure. Some sanding required two hands on the sander, which is difficult when the associated control doesn't work. (2) Dust "collection" was less than 50% (estimated). My leaf blower got rid of accumulated dust on the deck, mostly in the form of powdered paint. If this was inside work, an awful mess would have resulted. I finally adapted my shop vac hose to fit the dust collector port. There was no discernable improvement in dust collection. I would return the sander, but it did what was needed albeit with difficulty. I expected better performance of claimed features from the SKIL brand.

Excellent Sander, Especially for the Price
I have been doing smaller woodworking projects for years, meaning my palm sander and doing it by hand have met my needs thus far. But I recently started a project that includes a 16' long and 2' wide surfaces and I wanted something to speed up the process. Not only did this make the process so much faster, but the results were fantastic. Using a coarse enough grit and patience, I was able to plane out some slightly uneven joints as well. I only gave it 4 stars because the "filter" thing is a complete joke and the unit can get gummed up with sawdust which needs to be blown out occasionally.

Great sander
I owned a skill belt sander for 9 years it finally died on me so I went to buy a replacement assuming this was the same one I used to have.. surprised to find that this was an updated version of the one I used to have with a hard plastic dust collector and pressure sensing gauge.. Put this belt sander to work immediately with no issues good price and seems to compare to my older model. Durable belt sander if needed In time I would buy again

Awesome project sander
Bought this during sales for myself for Christmas. Mostly due to the sawdust compartment. Price point perfect $36. With 36 grit paper this is a beast for my immediate need for a 1900 property. There’s paint on the floor and the steps (not lead based). This little delight rips through the paint easy peasy. Better than an orbital sander. Use time saver. An option I like is the lock button and another the color indicator for pressure. Idiot lights serve a purpose for novices and also help ensure even pressure to deter damage to the tool and project when possible. The sawdust didn’t all go into the container. But it still minimizes the amount better then the other with a plastic option to it’s side that falls off often. Different brand. Skil has been a reliable basic tool in my life since departing from the military. From finishing sander to random orbital and more. I’ve noticed they work to improve projects and I’m happy with the results. Not sure I’d spend the current price. Considering inflation maybe it’s the new normal. Highly recommend tool shopping at Christmas. Great sales. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️????

Excellent Value
I bought this sander halfway through a carpentry project when my eight times as costly Makita sander decided it was time for the motor to burn out. In my experience, this is not something unusual for Makita, their alleged robustness notwithstanding. This Skil had some good reviews so I ordered. At that price, what was there to lose? It arrived the next morning and was able to finish my project with almost no interruption. Operation is flawless, the belt stays in position and the transparent dust catcher makes sense. The 18 inch belt is a size down from the Makita but didn't notice any difference in use. Some posters have remarked the unit gets hot. I didn't find that to be the case at all but with power tools I am always mindful of duty cycle so never push these units to the limit. Show some mercy and let it cool down once in awhile and I think you will be just fine. Maintain some perspective. If your intention is to sand a ballroom floor or a roller-derby track, rent a drum sander or hire a guy who has one. This Skil is priced and built for the handyman, furniture maker, stairs and railings builder etc. - not the sort of industrial user who needs to grind down 2 x 4's into toothpicks all day. Surprisingly light with a nice feel to it. Mine came with a medium grit belt installed - just right for many projects. As with most power tools, be sure to use hearing and eye protection and keep your fingers clear of the business end. Bottom line: "Skil" name and quality for the handyman/homeowner/craftsman at a great price.

Thoroughly Impressed…
I’ve only ever used the $500 brands of power sanders at work and so, was not sure what to expect on the lower end. This unit is a beauty. It’s got heft and just feels solid in my hands. When working, it feels just like any others I have used. The Pressure Indicator Lights have impressed me much more than expected… At first, I thought they may be a poorly thought out gimmick; they are not. At the very least, they are a reminder to people like me who tend gradually apply more and more pressure until I snap out of my monotony trance. And at Best, they can drastically increase the lifespan of your belts. The only little negative… The lights are hard to see when working in direct sunlight. Oh well. Quick & Easy to switch out belts. Works beautifully with a shop-vac attached for dust control. I personally haven't been pushing it too hard in the mid-30’s heat & I let it rest regularly. All in all, I find this to be a very capable, sturdy, nearly-professional grade unit & highly recommend it!

Little sander that could....
Had to redo my deck at my cabin. No drum sander to rent from nearby so purchased this belt sander. My deck is 12x15+ ft with steps that are 7x5+ft. Deck is 14+ years old pressure treated lumber, no prior staining/finishing. Too a lot of work, but this little guy did great. 60-80 grit, and it took off top wood with ease. The canister is a bit small for the amount of work I was doing, so I just let it blow (but you could hook up to the hosing on a wet/dry vac). The belts stayed where they should (until slight high screws tore them, and then they wouldn't auto-track). Never over heated. Quick and easy to change belts. I don't think I've spent better value on a power tool. Before I purchased, I did note some prior reviews commenting on the motor getting hot. Does get a bit hot, but the moments to stretch my back allowed it too cool down and I had no problems with it. Highly recommend!!

Uso casero
