Go rent a trencher, if you're doing a large area.
So, I have 7 active dogs and I live in the country. That's the equivalent of mixing oil and water trying to keep them from roaming the countryside. So instead of constantly buying cheap (and not so cheap) shock collars with remotes, I bought this instead. Had to cover 25 acres, figured this was ultimately what I was going to have to get anyhow because I've got some serious runners. The package showed up, all items there in the box. It was pretty straightforward, I needed to create a rectangular-ish area to contain my dogs. It provides various scenarios via illustrations with how you can set up your perimeter. It also has a few suggestions if you want to keep a garden off limits inside the contained area. Anyhow, it comes with the base, 2 rolls of wire, a collar, 2 packs of flags, and some wire splicing parts. What it should ALSO come with, is a trencher, free labor, and back pain medicine lol. Let me begin by saying I did not use the wire that came with it. I went and bought 14awg rolls of the extreme dog fence. It has better shielding, and it's a thicker wire ( I needed to bury the wire so I didn't run it over with farm equipment). This is a sound purchase, and i'd recommend it for large area containment. I also bought additional flags (you can buy them at just about any hardware store or lawn care store, or here on amazon!), because what they provided, wasn't enough. Also, the flags are white. Not going to work well when the ground is covered in snow. You have a large area, and/or have snow on the ground? Do this. Buy the plastic marking flags. Lowe's has em (as an example). Additionally, since I was covering a large area, I rented a trencher. Also do this if you're burying it. Trust me, your back will thank you later I don't care how fit you are. I live on the top of a hill, and having a trencher saved me HOURS and potentially my liver from the many pain meds I would've had to take to get it done. Pro tip: if you get the spool of wire I bought, bring it with you to the rental place to see if it fits the trencher. More on this in a minute. Lastly, free labor (or not free labor) helped ALOT. It took 2 teenage boys and myself to get it done in several hours with the trencher. If you're just laying it on the surface, you can do this alone as you'll just be kicking it along while you sip on a beer. So here's how it went. I Set the trencher up, fed out about 20ft worth of free wire to cover going under a sidewalk, up a wall, and into the garage, then put the spool on the holder on the trencher. And off I went! And then the spool went off the trencher when I went! Turns out, the spool size was a bit too much for the holder on the trencher. Hence, bring the spool with you if you rent a trencher. If its the wire that came in the package, you don't need to bring that, it'll fit on anything. So I struggled with trenching down the hill, and up the hill with that overgrown spool. The spool weighs a fair amount, and trenchers aren't light. Because of size and weight of the spool, the spool was binding up on the holder and too much tension was on the wire in the ground to the point it was coming out on any curvy areas. So after an hour or so (and alot of breaks), I came up with a nifty idea. I could just lay out the wire along the path I was going, and have the trencher feed it in as it went along the path. So, I cut the wire, and restarted. Grabbed 2 kids as well. Their job was to kick the spool along, and follow up with a rake to cover any exposed wire afterwards while I trenched. This was the ideal plan I failed to see before I started. Job finished up really fast after that. Final touch? 2 kids racing from the start and finish spot with flags to see who could plant theirs and be back before the other one. Base installation was quick. Mounted it on the wall, and ran the 2 wires to it. Easy peasy. It's recommended that once you fire up the system, grab a collar and walk the perimeter. If any breaks are evident, the collar will let you know when it beeps and doesn't beep (or shocks you, your choice). The collar paired up automatically (not sure if it was intended or not). Adjusting the range and strength is a user defined job. Your setup is different than mine etc etc. I'd like to say it works well. The hard part now is converting dogs that're used to shock collars and no boundaries. Now there's a static boundary and they don't like it. I'd recommend placing flags and then training your pets prior to putting the fence in, but you do you. Wish I did that. Hindsight's always 20/20.... In the end, the product works well. Snow will be falling soon, and i'll see if it works through that as well. But the product is solid. I'd say make the investment if you're on the fence about it. It's actually a good product. Buy with confidence!

Works Amazingly Well
I have a new German Shorthair Puppy and live in the country. She loves to put her nose to the ground and GO. That makes for a nervous owner! I installed this around the perimeter of my property. Put the collar on her, walked the perimeter with her, she tested it a couple times. She knows her boundary now with the installed flags and I also installed on an existing barb wire fence on 2 sides of my property. SHE WILL NOT GO PAST IT. I was working in my garden and took a load of weeds etc. to my trash pit on my 4- wheeler, she started running with me, I stopped at the boundary line and told her she better STAY, I left and she followed and got a surprise. The next load I took out, I took her collar off so she could run with me. I took off, she never left the garden!!! She respects it now and I have no more worries that she will stray. Even if something happens with the system and it isn't working or her collar isn't on, she still respects the boundary. The battery on the collar lasts a long time before needing recharged, I have gone for over a week and still no need to charge, works amazingly well. The only thing I wish it came with is a handheld remote to use in helping train her in other areas too. All in all I Highly recommend this fencing system.

Rent a cable installer
I purchased this system after reading a review by another user. Since I have some rough areas, I took his recommendation of buying 14 ga wire instead of using the wire that comes with the system. This also gives me a loop with no splices (underground splices make me nervous). I rented a cable installer as well, which was money well spent. I have 2.5 acres contained. My system has been installed for a couple of weeks now and operates perfectly. I have 2 dogs, so I bought another collar and both work well. Battery life seems to be good. The instructions warn against having the control box too close to any large metal objects, but mine is inside my metal shop and works fine. My only issue with the system is that the control box seems flimsy. I discovered this trying to insert the 14 ga wire into the terminals. I wound up connecting the thinner wire in the control box and splicing to the thicker wire.

Great Product would highly recommend
Product has worked perfectly since install and the battery life is unbelievable I never even turn the collar off and it's lasted about 3 or 4 months on the original charge. Would highly recommend this product spend the extra money you won't regret it with this one they give you 2 spools of wire good watertight connectors for in the ground and the battery life on the collar is incredible.

Works like a charm
Little labor goes a long way. Completely buried the wire - even in the woods to keep the critters from chewing. Very easy to hook up and install. Dog responded within first couple corrections. Now responds immediately at the warning beeps. Sits and watches the squirrels from the barrier zone. Follow the training directions in the booklet from start to finish and unless your dog is super stubborn, all should be good. Not sure on battery life yet - only been a couple weeks. So far, 100% satisfied ????????

Love the rechargeable collar
I installed this on our cottage property and had it up and running in about 6 hours. The training was easy to follow and the dogs understood the boundaries quite easily. The rechargeable collar is wonderful as it stays charged for a long time. The only thing I didn't like was the wire is only 20 gauge and is quite flimsy - there was a lot of rock and the wire has to stay above ground. Perhaps 20 gauge is adequate if you can bury it completely. Also when I opened the packaging one wire spool had come apart during transport and was quite difficult to roll out. I ended up rewinding onto a plastic spool and discovered many breaks in the wire covering so I could not use the defective wire. The other spool fell apart while unrolling so it seems to be a poor design. I plan to replace all the wire with 14 gauge next year as I don't expect that the flimsy wire will survive the winter exposed.

Great purchase only one complaint
The media could not be loaded. This was a great purchase for our property to protect our puppy. My only dislike is the collar itself. It is a belt buckle style and not convenient to use. Not easy to alter to a quick connect as it has to pass through a very narrow space on device

Collar has started malfunctioning after 2.5 years with traumatic results
Bought and installed in fall 2020. It cost a fraction of the price of a pro install for a ⅔ acre area. The training instructions worked well and our dog successfully used it throughout 2021 and 2022. Our dog has cumulatively spent dozens hours right up against one of the boundaries (she and the neighbour's dog liked to bark at each other) so I'm certain that collar was functioning reliably and she understood the warning beep. Any concerns about the collar being cruel were resolved when we saw how consistently she understood the warnings--she was never actually getting to the shock point. This spring when we began using it again, it wasn't detecting to the wire. The loop light on the base indicated the wire was fine so I rebooted the collar and it started working as expected. Today, after a few weeks of problem free use, the dog tried to follow me across the wire to the neighbours'. It seems that the collar did not give a warning, I didn't hear a warning beep and she didn't stop at the boundary like usual. As I started to wonder why the collar hadn't detected the wire, it kicked in and started shocking her. I tried to pull her back out of the shock zone but she continued being shocked (yelping in pain), so I resorted to frantically trying to remove it. As other commenters noted the belt style collar makes it difficult to remove and put on quickly, so she was shocked continuously for several seconds during the incident. The collar was not beeping as it should, either, the only reason I knew it was delivering a shock was the dog's reaction. Unlike some dogs which associate the collar with the boundaries in the yard (i.e. they continue to respect the boundaries after collar use has stopped) ours has always known that the collar is what can potentially shock her. She is now traumatized and fearful of the collar, rendering the system unusable. Even if we are able to get her comfortable with it again, my trust in its reliability has been broken.
