Finally, a lock my 4 year old can't defeat
My 4 year old gets up earlier than me, this means if he can be quiet he will sneak downstairs and steal sugar. I don't usually keep treats (cookies, candies, etc) in the house so he will steal actual sugar. We tried different disciplines but nothing worked. He has told us "I don't want to steal the sugar but my belly tells me to." We tried all sorts of locks, we needed something to go on the door to the downstairs and not his room b/c he needs to be able to leave to use the bathroom. Now, I can lock the door at night and know that he won't be able to sneak down in the morning and steal sugar, or use knives, or the stove, you know, the typical stuff that 4 year olds try to do when they wake up in the morning (oh, that's not typical you say...hmmmm). We had tried all the typical door knob locks, and some no drill locks (we were trying not to put holes in as we rent), none of them work, he can defeat them all; they tell me he's gifted...yay for me? So even though this one requires some drilling it is really a snap to install and as long as you mount it high enough (and there are no available chairs, ladders, precariously stacked boxes available) your child shouldn't be able to get through the door. I should also note, it is easy to open from both sides of the door when locked. When we first installed it was a little tricky to slide it from the on to off position (red button means it will not automatically lock when you shut the door, green means it will) but it seems it just needed some use to loosen up since it is easy to do now. I also like the finger jam guard, the 4 year old has a tendency to slam doors, which often has disastrous results when his 2 year old brother acts like his shadow.

Most durable one yet
This is 3rd door-locker apparatus for rather strong, resourceful 3.5 year male old humanoid with above-average strength/overall tenacity, penchant for late-night excursions and/or exploration of parental sleeping quarters. Attaches to both door/door frame with fasteners, backbone of which is long, 2.5 inch screw holding swivel arm to door frame. Had to shim it slightly for exact 90 degree orientation to trim (older house, more figured shape on trim.) The swivel arm then attaches nicely to the bracket on the door. Has withstood 10-20 minute sessions of intense, non-stop, back and forth yanking - think Samsonite luggage commercials if you know what I mean. Fingers crossed, have had for over a month, still functional. Doesn't lock the door tight, but allows for 3-4" opening with a little play.

Easy to install and very effective - most conveinant I have seen
2 minute installation and could have been quicker if my 2-1/2 year old was not helping me! Template included in the box- measure 60" from the floor to the bottom of the template, drill 3 pilot holes. Insert 2 screws into the main unit on the door, assemble the jam pieces (hook toward the door) and screw to the jam- test. I did the jam piece backwards at first. Always latches when door closes, holds door from opening AND from being closed again once opened so little fingers are not pinched- easy to release from both sides of the door (very important for us after being locked out of the house for 10 minutes). Makes a good deal of noise on our hollow core door too which let's us know when someone is trying to open it- nice bonus. I was looking for a top slide type lock since it was the only one I saw that could be opened from the outside, but SOO glad I found and bought this one way better.

Finally found what we needed!
We needed a lock for our basement door that could be opened from both sides, would allow the door to stay latched completely, and that our 2 yr old had no chance of opening. That was surprising hard to find - but then we finally found this lock! It is up high enough that a child cannot fiddle with it at all, yet is easy for an adult to open & close with one hand. It is on the inside of the door; so it looks nice because you can't even see it. My husband said it was easy to install. The only thing that I find difficult is switching it to the "off" position. The little button that you need to press is hard to press; however, we never really switch the lock off, so it isn't too bad. If you intended to switch it off a lot, it might be annoying.

Great for cats and kids!!
These are the perfect solution for homes with cats! Our litter box is in the basement, so we want our cat to have access, but not always our kids (especially crawling babies) and this works perfect. You do have to think through your installation (and make sure things connect correctly before you start drilling, so it's best to have 4 hands and 2 brains for it) but we have it on multiple different doors and have made it work on them. One watch out - make sure you align things in such a way that you can still close your door completely if you want to.

Works if you remember it is there
Installed this on our garage door. As previous review said, it has pulled out of the door. I even had my husband secure it with an anchor to no avail. The problem is that you forget it is there as it is on the outside of the door. A few tugs and it pulls right out. I am currently searching for something new. I really wanted this to work!

Worst door lock. Only lasted 2 days
Our home is ten years old and has nice new doors. This door lock requires you to put two screws into the door and one screw into the door jam. The two screws where stripped out of the door after just two days! I don't see how the other reviewers could have given this door lock four or five stars. It's the worst we've used. This door lock mounts on the exterior side of the door (the side where the lock is not). This is a problem because when you go to open the door you forget there is a door lock that only allows the door to open four inches. After opening the door four inches the door is moving fast enough to rip the door lock screws out of the door. The door leading to our garage is an insulated steel door and the screws ripped out in two days. Here's the lever lock that worked best for us. You must install it upside down and you cannot get locked in with it. http://www.amazon.com/Safety-Dorel-Lever-Handle-Child/dp/B004B4IYJK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1337219171&sr=8-1
