Not the train I thought it would be...

When I got this out of the box, I was worried by the lack of electrical connections from the controller that this would be battery powered train rather than being a typical Lionel train in being powered through the track--like the catenary (or third rail) of trains which have electricity supplied by outside lines. To my relief I found that this train is indeed powered by the traditional method of power runing through the track and not battery powered. The engine derives power through conductive track carrying DC power converted by the power adapter from AC wall power. The train's speed, however, is controlled wirelessly by Bluetooth or the included RF remote controller (requires three AA batteries). Lionel has done a good job jazzing up the scenery for Christmas by integrating LED lighting into the track so that the track sections illuminate as the train passes and then turn off. There are also Christmas sound effects.... The train comes with ten pieces of track, eight curved sections and two straight, to make a 4' x 6' oval. The train has four cars, including the engine and caboose. This is about as simple and inexpensive as you can get while still introducing your children to the real hobby of model railroading. It's a simple, fun train set. Run it around your Christmas tree. You kids or grandkids will love it.

Decent controller, medium material quality, great effects

It works and runs just fine. Getting it powered directly from outlet is a good benefit, no mess with batteries, where I connected to my smart power outlet and setup a schedule. It turns on for 30 minutes every evening, with the settings I have left the last it starts as the same. Product quality like built and material is okay, nothing fantastic or die hard collectible. But sure it does have the lionel quality some degree, nothing like lionel trains from 90s or early 2000s. Price is just right, sound effects are great and no complains yet.

Broke immediately

Loved this train, it was so fun and my son loved it. The remote kept getting disconnected and wouldn't connect to the train, tried the app, that didn't work either. Train would move for like 2 seconds then stop moving, ended up throwing it out after like 1 month. Waste of money.

The best option for me

Something that made a difference to me concerning getting a train for Christmas is the legacy along with the quality. This brand of train has been around for a long, long time and this is definitely what I’ve come to expect from what they offer. This is made very well, it’s got a classic look and feel to it but it’s almost got the quality of an old-school original. The LED lights are a very nice touch and the fact the train is powered like the other ones that I’ve had over the years makes me feel a lot better about this set. It’s not too loud, not too flashy, it’s just perfect to me. I love this set and highly recommend it. Pros: Easy to put together Made very well Nice LED lights Classic design Beautiful Cons: Not cheap

North Pole delivers the goods…

The media could not be loaded. Nice quality train tracks, sturdy engine, and an easy to use remote. I was impressed how the track fit together and did not separate after running. The engineer can activate the the whistle, and sounds. The front engine light comes on automatically. Wish it had so steam like the old ones, lol. Nonetheless, some nice modern features are included. Haven’t tried the Bluetooth, but don’t need to with the remote. Super colorful as the train is comin around the mountain with the lighted tracks. Trust you found this review honest and helpful:-)

CHEAP CONSTRUCTION, CARS REDICULOUSLY CHEAP, WON'T STAY CONNECTED!

CHEAP MADE FOR LIONEL, CARS WON'T STAY TOGETHER, CHEAP PLASTIC! NO LIGHT ON ENGINE, ABSOLUTE DISSAPOINTMENT. THE TRACK ONLY LIGHTS UP WHEN THE CARS GO OVER THE SECTIONS. HEY WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER IF THEY TRACK STAYED LIT. I AM A 40 YEAR LIONEL TRAIN USER BUT THIS ONE IS A JOKE, NO KIDDING, HIGH PRICED TOO. NOT WORTH IT.

Beautiful train set that’s perfect for under the tree

This is a beautiful train set that I’m excited to set up under the tree. The track is easy to assemble and disassembles just as easily. The lights are whimsical and will go perfectly with the Christmas decor. The train itself is great quality and moves smoothly. Bluetooth works perfectly to control using the app though I doubt I’ll use it much, until my toddler inevitably hides the remote anyway. It’s very easy to control and makes nice realistic sounds. It’s a lot of fun for kids and adults.

The casual train set an adult gets to play with

This looks like a toy train like you’d see going ‘round a Christmas tree in a storybook. It’s not a “realistic” sort of train like you’d typically expect from Lionel, and it’s perfect for the easy set up Lionchief lineup. This is a fantastic set for an adult because I have a good reason to get it out and set it up every year, and I can leave it in the living room for a month. My kids like it too. The dog… is suspicious.
