Love the craftsmanship, and it's magic like Harry Potter, no pain!
I took the plunge and bought this seat after much debate. I've been riding cycles almost my entire life starting at around 5 or 6 I can't recall. As I got older, I got more into competitive cycling and had more than two dozen different types of seats. Each and everyone takes time to break and some are better than others. Some start out pretty comfortable but after a long ride, it really hurts. Some less if I wear padded shorts plus another layer of padding. But they pretty much all hurt nevertheless. Now here's the Brooks. Rather clunky looking yet very aesthetically pleasing to the eye saddles. First ride about 24 miles, trying to micro-adjust to my bike (Bike Friday Pocket Rocket) but keep sliding back and forth and I feel like I keep slipping forward. So I raise the nose just a bit but then it was too much. This isn't the saddle's fault but rather the seat post design. It feels rock hard even though I had applied the Proofhide overnight. On the second ride, more micro adjustment and lowering the post an mm or two. Still felt like sliding forward a bit so I adjusted the tilt again. But, here's the weird part. The seat still hasn't been broken in and it still feels very hard but I don't feel pain. And the weird part is there's no pain. And my bottom is saying "Hey this is very comfortable, keep riding faster!" My single-gear Bike Friday now feels like a completely different bike.. only much better! On my third ride, I noticed a couple of very important habits that I used to have during my years of cycling. First, I don't stand anymore when anticipating a bump or washboard on the road surface. Actually, I now just enjoy going over them and feeling those imperfections on the road (like vinyl vs. CD?). Also, that last few miles after a ride when you're tired, wow, that feeling of relaxing and just enjoying sitting and pedaling very joyfully! If it's this good and I now only put less than 70+ miles, I can't wait for several hundred or a thousand! Update: So far, I have put over 200 miles on the new Brooks B17 Special saddle. I have applied Proofhide after each ride as well as put Obenauf's Leather Conditioner on the bottom of the saddle. One I noticed was that as soon as I applied the oil underneath saddle using a small brush, the leather quickly became very supple and flexible. On the most recent ride, I immediately noticed how comfortable saddle began to feel even at the beginning of the ride. This did not happen at least towards the end of the ride which was about 20 miles. I will continue to do the Proofhide/Obenauf's oil treatment and start to scale back some what down to every other month from hearon. If you're on the fence about this saddle, don't, by far, this is the most comfortable saddle I've owned to date.

Best seat I have had
I find most bicycle seats require you to conform to them. I expected this one to be difficult in the beginning, but that was not the case. While it wasn’t comfortable on the first ride it wasn’t as bad or worse than many of the gel seats I have had in the past. Each successive ride has shown improvement in comfort to the point where no other seat I have ridden has been as good.

Tested for 3 years by a cynic
I was skeptical even after installing this bicycle saddle because I was concerned that there was too much hype. I was also concerned about the durability in outdoor environments because it is leather. I purchased this bicycle seat almost three years ago and honestly I have put less than a thousand miles on it. I treated it to a slathering of Atsko Sno-Seal when I got it and have done nothing to it since. My bicycle is stored either in an unheated garage or on a covered porch (usually the porch) where it is very exposed and the seat looks like it is brand new. Fast forward to last December... I bought a new bicycle and have been somewhat unimpressed with the seat that came with it. After about 200 miles, I can say that the new seat was making me sore. I ride in street clothes like Old Navy Khaki shorts kind of street clothes. No extra padding or chamois.. Today, I decided to swap the Brooks seat onto the new bicycle and... HOLY CRAP! It is SO MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE! I totally get what everyone says about the seat breaking in. When it was new it was obviously not broken in so there was some concerning discomfort. But I stuck with it and eventually, that goes away. When did that go away? I have no idea. Honestly, this is probably not possible to really determine. I fairly heavy and likely weigh half again more than rider who race so my break-in time is surely different than most. Hang in there. It does break in.

Brooks great but ..
I have a few Brooks saddles ... I like them... I have an aged and a softened saddle ... So had confidence buying another .. Oh dear .. the variable leather thinkness, but ( I assume ) similar softening process means that not all saddles are created equally. Not a problem if you are wanting to break one in, but if you are opting for a softened, you probably want to avoid that bit. Also slight disappointing on a wider note that Brooks only offer the softened saddle in a single colour ... That isn't black.... My aged saddle is much darker, but otherwise similar to the softened saddle and a much deeper richer tone, so clearly it is possible. .. heyho .. that's a personal preference.

Legendary saddle
Excellent quality, great feel, easy to fit. Have bought black brooks saddles previously and found they take longer to soften and adapt to your bottom, but this one has softened in no time

A great saddle
This listing is unclear about whether it's for the Champion Standard or the Champion Narrow model, but luckily I have both and what I have to say applies equally to the two of them (and also the Team Pro Imperial and Swift). I've been using Brooks saddles (I now have 5) on my rotating fleet of daily bikes for 4 years now and I absolutely adore them. I wouldn't look at anything else. My oldest has well over 1000 miles on it and is on its second bike and it still looks wonderful. I have given the tension nut about 1/2 turn in that time. They come out of the box very hard, but they do soften with use and regular proofiding and become extremely comfortable, that process takes a few hundred miles. I've also found that the colour gets deeper and warmer with use (my saddles are all Honey coloured), which is nice. They look beautiful. Care is very important. You should apply proofide every 3-6 months whether you ride the bike or not, and possibly more if you ride very long distances. You should also keep a plastic bag under the saddle. Never ride a saddle with a plastic bag over it, but do put a bag over the saddle when you park the bike as rain is not your friend. You must not ride on a drenched saddle so if the rain gets it, you're walking home (it should be fine once it's dried out, but wet leather can tear). You also need to make sure you tension it as it stretches, it isn't a lot, but if you let it go slack it won't last as long (or be as comfortable). Obviously crashing your bike or letting it fall will scuff the saddle in a way which can't be repaired, but it has to be a very very bad scuff to damage it structurally. I haven't had any trouble fitting my saddles, though all of mine are attached to old fashioned clamps on vintage British roadsters.

Beautifully Made, Stylish and Comfortable Out of the Box
This is a beautifully made saddle by a very well established manufacturer. It may take a little time for the leather to give and fit your backside, but it will. I found it pretty comfortable out of the box, even so it has improved over time and is now very comfortable, despite still being quite hard to the touch. You will see reviews of these saddles saying you need to cover a thousand miles before they become comfortable, while this may be true for some, I would suggest it is time spent in the saddle rather than distance travelled that is important, so don't be put off by this. They are well worth the money.

Wonderful saddle and upgrade to my bike
Classic saddle and very happy I bought it. Though very hard on first few rides - felt like the saddle was made from wood(!), I’ve been applying Proofride every couple of days on the top and plenty on the underside. This has softened it up nicely. I’ve also taken this bike out for lots of short rides (about 5-6 miles) and after 6 weeks of breaking the saddle in, I’d be happy to go for longer rides now. I’ve found i can loop my bike lock under the rails and secure it when i leave it unattended. Following this, I’m now looking to replace the saddle on my road bike.
