Essential Item
I used this recently and it should be a standard item with all snow chains. It help take up the slacks that will always be present with snow chains. I have a set with each of the chains I have with all of my cars.

Maybe you don't need it.
I ordered chains that did not come with such a tightener, so I ordered the tightener separately. Then when I read the instructions with the tire chains, it suggested I not use the tightener because the chains need to move relative to the tire, so you don't wear holes in the tires where the connectors on the chain ring meet the tire. The chains should be able to move relative to the tire to get uniform wear. I have to admit that this makes some sense. I have always used tighteners before, but I have noticed wear spots on the sidewalls of the tire where the metal pieces that connect the traction chains with the circle chain meet the sidewall. I think the trick is to get the chains on fairly tight, but not too tight and NOT use a rubber tightener. At least this is what I plan to do. Now that I have the tighteners I can take them along for insurance. The actual construction of the tightener seems fine, a fat rubber band with stout metal hooks.

Ok for the price, I suppose...just not real durable.
In theory, this is a good product. Stretchy, appropriately sized, should work good right? Well, my experience was otherwise. I bought the first pair initially with the tire chains and I was able to stretch them out (they are pretty tight the first time) and get them attached. After a while, the rubber started to crack and split. I figured it was because of spinning the tires in the mud and chalked it up to operator error. I purchased another set this spring and put them on. One of the tighteners snapped right away. I just don't think they are very good. I'm thinking really seriously about just using some short bungie cords, criss-crossed over the wheel. That said, I put my tire chains on in December and left them on until February, because they go on a truck that stays on my property and is used for gathering firewood. Maybe they are not meant for more than temporary use... At the price, I suppose they could be considered something that should be replaced every year, but I set the bar a little higher.

They do the job!
I bought this pair of tighteners to add some support to the tire chains on our 4runner, and was worried that they might be a little too small. However, they've worked perfectly, pulling the fitted chains onto the tires so that they're an even more snug fit. I've seen a lot of chains dangling and swinging free up here, as well as many lying at the side of the road, sometimes accompanied by cars and drivers, who often have a rich variety of language that they direct at the chains instead of themselves for making such poor choices. These tighteners help me avoid being one of them.

Incorrect Cross Reference and Description
I bought this because it was listed as the replacement tightener for our Sure Grip Z (size SZ-335) Passenger Tire Chain. It isn't. Not only does this tightener have 5 metal rather than 6 plastic clips (which I expected) but it is actually a larger diameter than the original tightener, making it useless even if I replaced the clips. I find this very misleading given that it was recommended that I buy this together with the chain I bought, and given the official Amazon.com description: Product Description: Security Chain Company Quik Grip Passenger Vehicle Traction Chain Rubber Tightener is designed for virtually every type of use from passenger cars, SUVs to trucks, airport transporters, ATVs, garden tractor to snowblowers and forklift machines. Clearly this is not a universal product. I had tried to confirm Amazon's description by checking the Security Chain web site but they had no information about replacement tighteners. They don't even have a phone number. I am waiting for a return email to let me know what I should have ordered. Meanwhile I think Amazon should change the links and descriptions that make it seem like this product is compatible with Security Chain Sure Grip Z and Super Z passenger tire traction devices. Clearly it isn't. /TCW
