Nice light, but not that bright for the money

I bought this because it said it was super-bright and it was 12 volt; wanted it for 12 volt solar charged system in remote cabin. It is hard to turn the inside to get it to mount, had to call Seasense who was very responsive; had to use pliers to get the inside to start to rotate. The listing for the product does not list lumens--amount of light. This is around 80 or so lumens I found out from Seasense. I checked its functioning with 12 volt and it is bright enough to read a book in bed only if the surface mount is close to your head. It is relatively bright but will light up only a small area of a room. There are other LED's over 600 lumens, much, much brighter, for close to same price, some 540 that are a little cheaper. The big advantage is waterproof in a marine/boat environment, and it seems made well--but I don't need waterproof--it is for a log cabin--I need brightness on 12 volt system, expected this to be quite a few more lumens given the price and given the desription "Super Bright." I asked Seasense--"Super Bright" does not refer to how bright the light is--but is a rating given to the type of LED's used in it. That said, if you want a good accent light, this is made well; but if you want a bright LED to light up a good part of the room and spread the light, like most LED's except newest bulbs, this won't do it. It is very good I suspect for a boat cabin, which is small and needs to be waterproof and corrosion proof if on salt water. For cabin or shed lighting, it is not too bright and is more expensive than alternatives--which need not be sealed with epoxy and 100% waterproof. Relative value for money for my application is not good, I can get more lumens in LED for less than half the price. I can more than quadrouple the lumens for slightly lower place but that is for a bulb would need a $ 2.00 ceiling fixture, making price about same. Company is good, tech service phone call was immediate and informative response, quality high for marine use. Thus 3 stars. If this were a non-sealed, non-waterproof unit for under $ 10.00, I'd give it five stars. Value for money for my use brings it down to 3 starsl Shed solar lights are brighter I think--not sure of their lumens, but they don't light up much area either and only last a couple of hours unless you replace the nicads with much higher mili-amp NiMh batteries.

Best for the price. UPDATED: didn't last very long

For the price, I have to love it. Kind of on the small side, but quite decent as an ambient light. All LED worked and still work, installation was easy, the plastic is of course flimsier than the boat light it replaced (30 years old, when stuff was made to last) but it is also prettier, and it didn't break the bank. "Super Bright" might be a little pretentious, but they are the best I have found to light up the boat (so you can see around, not so you can read a book) without spending over 50 bucks a piece. UPDATE 06/2015: After about 1 year of use (and it is a boat, so it doesn't get used all that much) 2 out of 12 failed. They are flickering very quickly, which might be a desirable feature in a night club but on my boat I could do without. Overall I am disappointed in these lights. The previous lights on my boat lasted 30 years. Gave good light. Were made in the 1970. 40 years later, with all the progress we made, we only can come with lights that last 1 year, give poor light, and are all overpriced. Still, 3 stars because the pricing is lower than other ridiculously expensive marine lights, but is it worth it, considering the limited lifespan and the poor brightness (gives a bluish faint light: to give you an idea, having one inside the head of a catalina 30 (which is as small as it gets) doesn't give enough light to even brush your teeth) ? I would say no. I will still replace the 2 that failed, because now that I have 12 of them I can't afford to replace them all, but I wish I had found something better. For those of you who want a good price and a good light (the design is kind of ugly but it works, delivers a ton of light, and hasn't failed me so far) Gold Stars F3528001 LED Dome Light. They come in double or single, singles cost $25 for 3 of them ($8.33 a piece) and it gives at least 5 times more light than the SeaSense, and is far more durable.

Worth the Money

Bought these for my 26 foot boat. Installed 5 of them. 2 in v-berth, one over port salon couch, 1 over port galley and one over starboard salon couch. The light is very white, which I like and very bright, which I also like. Light spreads well and wioth my white with blue trim interior looks great. Not so sure how the whiteness would work with a wood or darker interior but that's a personal choice. For a light colored interior it looks great. The attaching wires are tiny (22ga?) and wiring them into the boats 16ga was a bit tricky. The bezel mounts on the surface and the LED light twists in the center. It was a bit tricky to get the butt joints and all out of the way to get the light in. Also - Do not substitute countersunk screws for panhead when mounting the bezel. You will not be able to install the light in the bezel - Ask me how I know - LOL... Finally they are not very "robust" looking. Time will tell but I don't expect these lights to last over 5 years in a marine environment. All in all they are worth the money.

it puts out an excellent amount of light for its size

Though the description of this product is correct (in terms of size), it is smaller than I expected it to be. That's not a knock on the product, just that I was expecting something a little larger. That being said, it puts out an excellent amount of light for its size. This is intended to be a cabin light or courtesy light in a cockpit, which means it needs to create enough light to see what you're doing without being blinded or without disrupting your field of view. This light meets those criteria. I would give it 5 star except that the installation is a little tricky. If you don't get it in there just right, the wires will get in the way and keep you from spinning it and locking in place. Also, its designed for flush mount with no exposed wires, as there's no chase for the wires to come out the side.

Great for the price.

Is a great little light. Perfect for the boat. Installation was a little frustrating to keep the wires out of the way to twist it in.... but easier than most boat parts and easier than the light I replaced.
