Not black, but I'm happy with it
Easy to use. I didn't clean it before hand and just followed the directions about filling it up using a bowl. It got a little cloudy but filter cleared it up in less than 10 hours. Hoping that my plants like it.

Beautiful!
This stuff looks beautiful. It’s a chocolate brown color that doesn’t reflect light , so no glare (like the stuff you get from PetSmart). It looks very natural & classy at the same time. The chocolate brown color made the colorations of my fish pop! The price was right, it was packaged well, and it arrived on the promised date. I would buy again.

A honest review.
It’s awful. I washed my substrate in one cup batches through a strainer for 15 minutes each. Rinsed and rinsed and rinsed and rinsed. It’s still cloudy. I rinsed it until the water ran clear! Still. Cloudy. In. The. Tank. It’s awful. Unless this grows baby bettas for me there is no way this could ever be worth the price. The only upside is the natural look is stunning. It’s excatly what I wanted, but it’s not worth it. Don’t waste your money. I think a clear bottom would be better than this substrate.

Raise ph but definitely looks good
It does look good, but cleaning it is a chore and it causes ph spikes, I wouldn't suggest using this unless your using Co2 to balance out the ph spikes that is cause or using at lot of drift would which then causes tannies which might change the color of your water with a moderate filter

Great bottom layer for an aquarium substrate
This gravel is great for a planted aquarium. I have this as a bottom layer in my tank with fine sand on top. The bag has a built in mesh strainer so you can rinse it in the bag, which is awesome. However, even after heavy rinsing it still clouded up my water pretty bad for a day. It's also not black but a dark red/clay color which does look striking against my black sand. I'd buy this again, if I needed it.

Gorgeous in a Planted Tank
Five stars. This substrate is beautiful in my 5-gallon planted betta tank. It's a rich, dark tree bark colour that complements the greenery and offers a subtle, elegant, and most importantly, natural look to my betta's home. It also helps my cherry shrimp stand out so I can keep a better eye on them than when I had reddish-tinged river pebbles as substrate. To the people complaining that it isn't black: the bag itself does not advertise to be although the listing title of the item is incorrectly called "black dark". This is called "dark" on the bag, and it is. If you're looking for black gravel, Seachem has one specifically named that. To the other people complaining about dust and debris: one very thorough rinse through a cheesecloth lined strainer and careful addition of water to the tank so as not to disturb the substrate overmuch, and I had next to no clouding - any particles that did float up settled in less than a minute. I will say that simply rinsing it in the bag as advertised isn't enough, but taking the time to rinse it manually will pay off in tidy water and a beautiful result in the tank. Love this product, and will be using it exclusively for as long as it is available.

A Substrate That Doesn't Degrade Over Time - But Requires Significant Rinsing!
Seachem Flourite Dark Porous Clay Gravel is an ideal size gravel: not too fine to make gravel vacuuming a problem and not too big to be problematic for corydoras rummaging along the base of the tank. I was hoping the 'Dark' clay would be almost black, but it's a chocolate brown shade... I actually prefer the 'Red' clay as it enhances the colours of the fish and plants more. You also need to rinse it about four times before the water runs clean - so don't put it into the aquarium without washing it out well in a tub first! Good as a top substrate with JBL substrate & Fluval Aquasoil beneath it to keep the soil in tact and ground your aquatic plants.

Not black, light brown
The bag is advertised as black but the colour I got was light brown and doesn’t look great in my aquarium.

Good product nonetheless
It is more of a dark red/brown substrate, and nit bkacj as advertised. Either way, it does look more natural than what I had before. Good product nonetheless..just be wary that it's not black.
