Not bad for the money

Overall it is a good product, and it works well, but I did run into one problem. The first time I tried to adjust the tightness on one of the wing nuts, it stripped. They are not solid metal, but rather sheet metal bent into shape. A trip to Home Depot, and about $1.10 to replace all 4, and it is much more secure. (I got 4mm 0.7 wing nuts.) The product shipped assembled, and the magnifying glass was in cardboard and plastic, so I had no problem with that. I've heard it called tippy, and it is a little tippy, but I think it's a center of gravity thing. If it's tippy, you need to move the hands and the magnifying glass to the other side, and it won't be as tippy. Just my observation. I would recommend this to budget minded hobbyist who maybe are just starting out. If you're a pro, or you've been doing electronics for a long time, you'll probably be disappointed with this.

Not a heavy base

Depending on how you position it, the weight of the magnifying glass may cause the base to tip over. The magnifying glass is removable so it's not that big of an issue. When the item arrived, I first thought that it was broken. It looked like it was going to fall apart and the arms wouldn't stay up. After playing with it a bit, I learned how to adjust the arms so it wouldn't flop around; using wing nuts you could tighten or loosen the pivoting areas of the arms. The biggest problem with the product is the clips, they are friction fitted onto a rod, because of this I sometimes feel like the clips will drop off. They haven't fallen off yet but you could pull it off with a bit of force. The teeth of the clips are also really sharp and easily bite into wire insulation.

I got this because it was a relatively inexpensive helping hands device. Note that you can get this same thing at Harbor Freight if you have one close by, and probably for around the same price. At any rate, this has a lot of wingnut tighteners to make it operate, which is ok, but because of the chrome-to-chrome connection, even tightened, it's not fully secure. Plus, it loosens from time to time. It works ok for PCB work, better than just sitting the PCB on the workbench, but I've seen helping hands that are higher-quality (note: also higher-price) and do a much better job. Additionally, the base, while cast iron, is not that large, so a little bump could knock it over in the middle of working on a project. If you're serious about soldering and want to take a step up, this is not the way to do it. If you're a hobbyist who does the occasional job, this might be right. Just keep in mind that it's not going to be perfect, but it's better than not having anything.

This is a great little tool for the price

This is a great little tool for the price. The magnifying glass works just well enough for those with poor sight, and doubles as a great counterweight on the opposite side of the clips. While the gator clips are very strong, they are also a bit sharp so mind your wires etc. with a cloth or paper towel (or non burning/melting material). They tighten very well to stay in place, but bear in mind when putting the clips near each other, you will have to have them at an extreme angle as the distance between the base of the clips doesn't change. All in all, this does the job, and for the price it can't be beat!

handy-bot

I am speaking as a newbie in soldering... I got this device on a "just cause" basis, but right off the bat I could tell how useful it is. Its a must have device. My very first project was to fix a set of headphones and it keeps the wires right were you want them. Its also kinda cute, it looks like a little bot, its not so bad as a shelf decor. My only complaint is that its base is a little small, if you don't have the weight distribution right it'll tip over. I am thinking it be nice if it had little holes so I could attach it to a more permanent base but its alright as is.

great accessory for painting models

Both my fiance and I paint miniatures, and we've both found this to be very helpful. The base is nice and heavy so it never tips over, even when holding pewter minis. The joints are stiff so you don't have to worry about repositioning - you can use it while gluing limbs together, etc. The magnifying glass is easy to position. My one word of caution is that the teeth on the graspers can leave marks in the model (both plastic and pewter) and scrape off paint, so always leave some flash on the model for the graspers to hold. Not a huge deal, just be mindful. Perhaps if the graspers were lined with rubber or something it would be better.

Works great but...

These are very helpful tools if working on small boards or parts that you need a better view of. it is decently built, however, it did come with chips around the edges of the magnifying glass. It is not a problem and does not interfere. Just poor quality workmanship on their part. I still gave it 4 stars because other than the chips it works perfectly and helped me solder a wire on a single pin at the back of a mini HDMI which I was not able to do for a week without this device. Just remember, it is cheap and that makes it worth it because it works!

Great extra set of hands

I like this product especially for soldering where it helps to have not only the magnifying glass but two clamps to hold what you're working with. The base however is not too heavy which can be a pro or a con depending on what you're working on so if thats going to be an issue for you you can always stick some weights on top or if you're like me and have a work bench you can either screw this down using some brackets or I just use velcro to make sure it stays in place which allows me to move it when I need to.

3/4 of it works great

The stand and clips for this are wonderful. But the magnifier is a big heavy lens with a thin metal support with two ends that must be held together, around the lens, in order to create a (rather shoddy) screw that you can then pretend to screw into the stand, only for it to fall out when you touch it. The stand works awesome. The lens, I threw out before I even got to use it.

Frees up 1 to 2 hands...

Holding a soldering iron in one hand, and solder in the other hand, leaves me two hands short: one for a magnifying glass so I can see what I'm doing, plus another hand to hold the object. This low cost gadget solves this problem. As for balancing issues, yes, the base is a bit small, but what I do is I make the the mechanism stick to the front, while the object is on the far side. For light-ish objects this works fine. At some point I'll just nail it to a plank of wood of sorts. I wouldn't make balancing issues hold you back from this...

There ok base is not heavy enuf to hold the mafnifier and the project at the same time i had to glue it to a pice of wood to get it to stop falling over. only other thing is i wish the clips had rubber on them they cut into wires i just put some heat shrink tubing on them works ok for now.

Works great. Many uses.

Very handy for macro photography. Very solid construction. The bottom of the base was not flat and rocked a little. A few passes with a file repaired that. A little unruly to set up with so many thumb screws to adjust, but once is set it works awesome.

Adorable and Practical Gift for the Craftsman/Craftswoman

Bought this as a gift for my husband as he was doing a lot of fine soldering and you need more than one hand. It works well and it very adjustable for most situations. Like another reviewer, I have also used this to remove a sliver from my hand. Sometimes you need a helping hand and for the price this little one is very good.
