Absolute Favorite Backpack Ever

I have bought the Red Rock Outdoor Back Pack three times, and I cant say enough good things about it. Originally bought 2 bags, one for work and other for travel, and they have since taken over my life. The bag has a slightly smaller width then traditional back packs making it nice and compact, but it makes up for it in expandable volume. The main compartment works as a full clamshell making it easy to pack and access (think clothes). The center compartment provides additional volume from top to bottom making it perfect for laptops and electronics. And, the front two compartments are great for your smaller odds and ends such as pens, notebooks, and flashlights. An additional nice feature is the bag has some sort of inner wax lining which goes a long way in making it water resistant. While it is not waterproof, it does do well in heavy rain / wet conditions. Lol, the reason I had to buy the bag the third time was because I used on a trip to Costa Rica during the rainy season and ended up gifting it to a local who was enamored with it, but unable to purchase through Amazon. Pro tip if you use item with clips such as key rings and badges, weave zip ties through the outer webbing to create connection points. Love this bag!

Love the bag but the SMELLS is very strong

I've just received it today and will probably update this review once I've used it a few times to determine possible pro's and con's of the bag. I love the bag at first glance for looks and style design. I purchased the Woodland Digital Camouflage pattern. I purchased this bag specifically for hunting with my husband that being said this bag STINKS horribly of the plastic and chemicals that they used to make it. I usually wouldn't complain of something new smelling new but it's really bad. I've washed the bag twice in baking soda and then with a smell neutralizer laundry soap and I'm currently sun drying the bag trying to cut some of the smell out. There would be no way I would be able to use this for hunting with its current smell. Just want to give anyone a heads up that you will probably want to air the bag for a few days before actually using it or all of your items will smell like the bag. Update after using the bag... So I used the bag a few times. Each time I carried the bag about 7 hrs a day in woods that weren't so easy to navigate. I carried a 3L water bladder in the main compartment since it wouldn't fit in the velcro pocket pouch (located on the very back of the bag, just under the shoulder straps) that I think they intended to be used for water bladders of 2L. The longer I carried the bag the more I noticed how narrow the straps were placed, and it was beginning to cause my neck to ache which gave me sore shoulders the next day. My hiking bag has wider strap placement and is more comfortable to carry for longer periods of time. Now to the waist belt and other "cinching" straps. The design of the (tai-glide slides) plastic devise that is meant to keep the tension on the straps doesn't have any bite or abrasiveness to keep the straps from slipping loose while under pressure. I cinched the hip belt tight around my waist to take some of the weight off my shoulders. As I would walk it would loosen up. After it actually came undone completely my husband fixed it by looping the strap back though (forward and then reversed it back in) the "Tri-glides Slides" (the D ring looking part that doesn't have the buckle part) and this made it stay put. Before he did the I was contemplating how I was going to replace them all with new ones that were better with "teeth" for grip. So at this point it doesn't look like I will have to replace them. I did buy seatbelt cover pads for added cushion for the straps and hip belt area. I think that will help for the days when I'll be hiking with bag most of the day. My overall experience with the bag is good. I think that you get what you pay for and this bag being under $40 is worth that to me. If it were in the $60+ range I would have returned it due to the lack of comfort and design issues. Overall it's a great bag for light duty use.

Good Versatile Pack

Purchased for a "bug out bag" or a "survival bag," however, I have also taken it for day hikes through state parks due to the hydration capability and the expandable capacity. Bottom Line Up Front (BLUF): A great little pack that you can toss a few things in (for a day hike) and compress the bag, or stuff the heck out of it and spend the weekend or prepare for the apocalypse. Comfortable and fully adjustable. **Warning, the sleeve for a hydration bag is on the smaller size so be sure to get a smaller volume.** ::Compartments:: - Three compartments on the front. Two small stacked on one another and a full sized 3/4 zipped compartment. The smallest compartment is on the top and is just a double zipper pouch that you an stuff and has velcro molle system on. The second smallest compartment has an internal storage area for pens/pencils and smalls. Much like you would see is a school backpack. The largest of the three compartments has another sleeved area that you can store small entities in. Each compartment has double zippers, however, they do not completely clam-shell flat. They zip most of the way open which is good so you don't dump everything out. - One LARGE compartment that complete clam shells open FLAT with a small zipper and a mesh sleeve. This is great for putting bigger items, and the clam shell design allows you to open up and lay flat (if you unclip the side compression straps) to look at everything you packed. - Hydration sleeve. Might be able to put a tablet or small laptop in, or a lower volume hydration bag. I ran the tube and mouthpiece out the top and fixed to the strap with a elastic strap. ::Size:: When I went on a day hike, I took a pull-over fleece, a full hydration bag (Camelbak), a couple oranges, knife, protein bars, cell phone, and a small fire starting kit. I had the compression straps cinched down to compress the bag to prevent unwanted movement. When I have more of my "survival" gear packed in the bag, I can let out the straps and have full capacity. Very satisfied with the room. I can have Altoid Tins lengthwise projecting out in the secondary compartment and still can zip shut. So much room. ::Molle:: There is a full Molle system on the pack. Underneath you can hang down a bonus bag or maybe a small sleeping roll. Both sides have one strip of useable Molle with a quick-clip system. The back has the velcro on the top small compartment to personalize and the full panel underneath. Looks sturdy and works well with my beaner and quick-clip system.

I have it for 2 years so far and really satisfied with the quality. Indeed, it's not huge, but I carry my laptop, water bottle, few notebooks and textbooks, and other school staff. So it is an ideal for going to college/university or some trip to see historical sites and/or a little weekend trip.

Excellent Assault Pack for the Budget Conscious

This assault pack is excellent. I am using it as my everyday carry get home bag. I like the compartmentalization of the pack, as this setup lets me stay very well organized. The extensive MOLLE webbing is really helpful for hanging gear off the outside of the pack, and could be used to strap on external pouches for added space. The pockets inside the compartments add great utility for storing small equipment and pens and pencils without them being lost. It is not excessively large, being only roughly 18-19 inches high, about 8 inches across, and expands out to be about 8 inches front to back. It serves well as my get home bag, or day assault pack. I would not think that this would be suitable as a 72 hour kit, as it is far too small, but if you're looking for a tactical EDC, this is likely a good pick for you. It seems quite well made, with lots of double stitching. There are some sections have that rubberized, waterproof material lining the inside, but this material isn't found everywhere, so it will not be strictly waterproof. The straps are thick and well padded, comfortable for extended walks. The waist belt sits quite high up, and doesn't really allow for weight transfer to the hips for someone my height, and I'm not excessively tall. The zippers appear to be tough and heavy duty. The nylon that forms the pack is thick, tough, and I suspect will withstand some abuse. I recommend this bag. It likely isn't built to the standard of a Maxpedition or 5.11, but I think for the average user, it will stand up to a few years of use with no major issues. It is also important to remember that it is roughly 1/3 to 1/4 the price of comparable bags from Maxpedition or 5.11. If you're in the market for a reliable tactical assault pack, and you don't want to break the bank, I would suggest you give this pack a try! Great for the money and size!

Such a great bag for the price! Zippers, pockets, and molle webbing are all good stuff. more molle on the sides could be great, but I can't really complain. The bag is a tiny bit smaller than expected, but once it's full you'l realise there's plenty of space for a LOT of things, and if you really need for more, you can still customize it with some of so many molle pouches availlable! My only small complain would be the shoulder and waist straps, especially the waist: If your bag is heavily fulled, they might not give enough you support and weight balance... Anyway, this problem can be solved with better straps, so I still give it a 5 stars. Overall, the bag is awesome and sturdy. I really like the classic US Navy style camo, I feel confident with this thing and I can't wait to bring it on the field test!

Excellent Value for Specific Purposes

It only holds 20 liters of volume, but for a daypack, that is plenty. Plus, it's expandable. I like the way it is divided into several large, medium and small compartments, each with subpockets and holders. It allows for organization of my gear. That way I can find it quickly when I need it. The stitching is solid and the material is tough. A large water bladder pocket holds up to a three liter bag and the molle compatible straps all over it make it expandable. One can easily fit a molle compatible knife sheath, expansion pouches and/or one or two water bottle carriers. For day hikes where you won't need to carry much gear with you, and for hunting, it is an excellent pack. Its only negative (in my opinion) is that its waterproofing is inside. I wish it had a pouch to carry an external waterproof cover, as do many packs of less tactical design, but I also understand that such covers can be grabbed and ripped by brush and make it less handy to get into the pack, so it's comme-ci, comme-ca, as they say. It's a bit small if you'll be hunting or hiking in conditions where you have to carry several changes of clothes (like here in east Canada where the whether can change wildly in the course of a day). Still, I find it it excellent for its purposes. I like the design so much that I bought Condor's similar and excellent 3 day assault pack for overnighters.

Tough backpack, smaller than expected.

Backpack was smaller than anticipated, but I made it work, and it was worth the compromise. This bag is one tough SOB, it’s a real beauty to own. Plus, the aesthetic of the bag is quite pleasing in my opinion. The MOLLE straps on the sides and front of the backpack can fit MOLLE pouches, for me I have two MOLLE pouches on each side of the bag, they help with storage space.
