Works great
Bought this to install post-sale in a rental house, as we discovered after the fact that the old one had not been working for a couple years (thanks for letting me know, tenant). The buyer called me back because it didn't work, but I discovered the wires were hanging down and preventing the flapper from opening. Easy problem solved and it works great now.

Ooops, bad switch
This is the second Red Lion sump pump I have ordered to deal with the rains of biblical proportions that have plagued part of the world recently. The first pump was the 1/2 HP model with vertical switch and it worked generally very well. Almost too well, since it was so powerful that it started sucking molten lava from the core of the earth along with the sump water. The second model I received is a 1/3 HP model but I have to go through the return process since on this one, the vertical switch doesn't function. Bypassing the vertical switch, the pump works impressively well. But you don't get more than two stars if one of the primary features of a device fails to perform. UPDATE: the Amazon, I mean Amazing, return process had a new and fully functioning product to me in about 3 days, and it was put straight to work. And it works splendidly. A great product and great service, and so I upped the rating by two stars.

Quiet, and pumps water quickly
The pump works great! It is pretty quiet, considering how much water it moves. Our sump pump is located in the master bedroom, so being quiet was important. I only gave it 4 stars because the float doesn't have much travel. What I mean is that when the pump turns on, it takes 12 seconds to empty the sump and shuts off. This is not a fault per se', but I would have liked the float to have more travel. Meaning it would not turn on so frequently. The other option was the float style that is on a "Tether". This style lets more water enter the sump before coming on, but the online reviews were not favorable in tether-style reliability. So the shaft-style float actuator is more reliable, but only has 4" of travel. So having such a short on/off cycle is the trade-off for reliability. Our sump is about 30" in diameter and this pump empties the water fast.

This pump has a large surge current
I’ve been looking for a sump pump that has not only a low current when it is pumping, but also a low current in the first fraction of a second when it comes on. This is referred to as a surge current, or inrush current. The surge current is always larger for a motor than its steady state operating current. I want to power a sump pump (and other essentials) from a low wattage, fuel efficient generator. So, I found the specs for this pump, which are 6 amps surge/inrush, and 4.4 amps steady state. That would be pretty good, if true... I just installed the pump today, and I measured the surge and steady state currents using a Fluke 376 meter, which is ideal for this purpose (also bought through Amazon). I’m also using an Extech 480172 AC Line Splitter for this measurement (bought from Amazon). I consistently see a surge current of 9 amps (8.9 to 9.2 amps), and a steady state current of 3.4 amps. I’m happy with the steady state current, but the current that causes me the most trouble is the surge current, which is much higher than the spec says. You certainly don’t have to be an electrical engineer to do such measurements, but I am one. So I’m sure I’m measuring this correctly, sad to say.

This Pump Sucks ... in a good way!
We had water in the crawlspace at our lake cabin this year so I first needed a pump to evacuate all the water under the cabin and then install in the new sump bin we installed. Before buying this Red Lion sump pump I was using my neighbors Flotec sump pump. The Flotec pump worked good but it was 30% more in price than the Red Lion so I thought I'd take a chance and bought the Red Lion ... and boy I'm glad I did. First off I saved money on the Red Lion pump, the build quality is excellent and much to my surprise it pumps out faster than the Flotec did. Performance wise they are both ⅓hp but the Red Lion pump has a higher capacity. The pump can be operated in continuous "Manual Mode" or Automatic "Float Mode" The sump bin we were installing the pump in was very small and narrow so the Sliding Float worked better for our sump bin. The sliding float was more compact and triggered the pump when the water level in the bin reached 4" inches. With a tethered float pump the water leave would have had to reach higher and that was not suitable for our application. I wanted to shorten the trigger level for the Vertical Float Switch and added a piece of foam to the float so it will trigger a bit sooner. With our small sump bin this Red Lion sump bin empties out the sump barrel in less than 30 seconds ... it's really fast. We didn't have an issue with the cycle time of the pump however I do wish the sump pump would pump the water level down to the bottom of the barrel or perhaps only a ½ inch or so ... this sump pump leaves about 2" inches of water at the bottom of the barrel. Overall I'm very happy with the performance and price of this Red Lion Sump Pump. I have confidence in the pump and would recommend it. Important Note: One thing to keep in mind ... there is no back flow value on this pump so if you are pumping up a high wall the water that's in the vertical part of the pipe can drain back into the sump barrel after the pump stops. Depending on how high a lift you are going this can cause the pump to cycle. A Back Flow valve on the discharge can prevent the back flow of water if you are experiencing this problem. Some sump pumps include a back flow value with their units ... this one does not. This wasn't an issue for me but might be for you.

Perfect replacement for my laundry tub tank
The original pump in my tank, which was a Red Lion tank but had another brand pump in it, died and caused a flood. This one is a little quieter and quicker to pump the water out. My only gripe is that is has two wires instead of a single wire. I don't see the purpose of having the switch plug separate. Still works fine. Shall see how long it lasts.
