Beware! Hair catcher included!
I really can't believe this. This drain, which is supposed to be like a commercial drain, has an obstruction in the throat. I bought two of these to replace popup drains in a double vanity, expecting that they would be like every other grid drain -- free flowing. Instead they decided to put a mount for a popup (or some kind of closing mechanism) in the throat of the drain! Let me repeat: The whole purpose of this style of drain is to provide an unobstructed flow -- obstructions caused by pop-up, umbrella, etc. drain closers CATCH HAIR and create clogs. NO other "commercial" or grid style drain has anything mounted in the throat. I'm remodeling due to a flood that caused $60,000 in damages, all due to a conventional popup drain that caught enough hair to create a clog just about the time a tenant left the water running all day. So I researched drains. A lot. And found that the popup mechanism is like a plumber's "full employment" policy, like dentists giving your kids candy at the office, like car mechanics "forgetting" to tighten the nuts on the drain pan.... Anything that catches the hair but that you can't easily remove and clean is going to create a clog sooner or later - sooner if you have long hair. True, commercial drains can't be closed. You have to use a rubber pad if you need to fill the sink. (Who uses the - usually dirty - bathroom sink to wash out their undies anymore?) So the whole point of a grid drain is that the grid catches earrings, hair and such, leaving the pipe unobstructed. If anything gets past the grid, there is nothing to stop it from getting swept into the larger drain system where it has a better chance of swishing on through to the sewer. (Yes, you might get a clog in the p-trap, but that's not nearly as likely as one caused by popup mechanisms, which are guaranteed to catch hair, more hair, soap scum, more hair.... Boom, you've got tons of soaking "dry"wall falling from your ceiling.) So why on God's Green Earth did they put a popup mount in the pipe? I suspect it was to brace the pipe and keep it from collapsing during installation since it's very light and cheap. BUT (you're going to love this part!) you CAN'T EVEN USE A POPUP with it because the grid isn't removable. And, as a free bonus, you can't ever clean the popup support haircatcher thingy, because the GRID ISN'T REMOVABLE. If this were a bridge, the designer would go to jail.
