Simplicity!
Got this as an upgrade to the 700. As the 700 seemed like it was having a hard time keeping up with the bio load of my 55gallon. Even though it is rated up to 65 gallons. The 1000 was what I needed. Added more surface area for more benefitial bacteria to grow on. Not over powering one bit. Was able to add on to the spray bar to have it almost completely across the back of the tank. This distributes and breaks up the flow of water. To not be so strong and stress out sensitive fish. This is good to agitate the water surface and help with the cycling process. I like how the 700 and 1000 use the same size filters and hoses. I like how simple it is to assemble. I was able to screw the hoses into the 1000 and keep my prime. The tricky part can be priming it for first time use. The best method I've found is use your substrate vacuum with syphon. Connect the syphon to the outflow hose before connecting the spray bar. It worked like a charm. Didn't even need to use the primer button once it got going. This takes stress off the pump. Before assembly make sure your syphon fits the hoses first. Make sure the outflow hose is as short as you can get away with. Measure the length before doing any cutting. This also takes a bit of stress off the pump. You can keep the intake hose long with a bit of a loop in it. This helps gravity assist the pumps water flow. As far as noise level. It depends on your substrate and filter meada. If you use sand. A prefilter is a must. This keeps sand out of the motor. Any sand in the motor can raise the noise level. A course sponge prefilter will work just fine. Just don't have the intake adjusted all the way to the bottom of your tank. If you have too much meadia in the trays. This can slow down the water flow. Causing the motor to work harder. This with cause higher noise level. Other than that it's actually pretty quiet. Even more so if you have doors on your tank stand. Also keep the tanks water level close to the spray bar if the sound of the water is too loud. The higher up the spray bar is from the waters surface. The more agitated the waters surface will become. This is benefitial for non sensitive fish. Speaking of the spray bar. I don't like how the suckion cups don't hold for very long. So be prepared to press the spray bar back on at least once or twice a week. This goes for the intake as well. Once you astablish the bio load level. You will know how often to replace the floss filters. Never replace the bio filter. Just quickly rinse with aquarium water and reuse. Remember to shut off the hose valves before any matinance on your canister filter. Don't forget to rinse the cansiter as well. I don't like the ratings. As they don't seem right. The best tip I can give. Is look at the smaller number instead of the up to number. On the 1000 it's rated for 50 up to 100 gallons. Even though I don't recommend this canister for a 100 gallon tank. It works perfect for a 55 gallon tank and okay for a 75 gallon tank. I don't like how it's hard to find the ceramic shaft for the perpeller inside the motor. So avoid tampering with. Just rinse out with water. Once it breaks you have to buy a whole new canister filter. Another reason I didn't give this canister filter 5 stars and better value. Is because the motor is sensitive and can easily burn out. As good as this canister filter is. Just doesn't last very long. So remember to keep up with your matinance to increase the lifespan of this canister filter.

Cascade 1000 Rocks - great buy for the price - smartly made not to break- super easy to prime
I have a 13" pleco.....bunch of guppies texas map turtles and some other stuff in a 75 gallon tank that had to have its fluval filter taken away. I went away and when I came home it smelled terrible and I couldnt even see through the water. The pleco had to be at the window just for me to see him. I could not use the fluval 305 I use to have and I could not find another one on craigslist for 25 bucks. I researched for a day and decided to go with the cascade 1000 based on its accessories and the good reviews. Great Choice so far Pros 1. price, 99 bucks for a filter that can handle a 100 gallon tanks is great. 2. The way it is made in some ways is much better than the fluval. For one it has a clamp on each side as opposed to just two. I use to have a fluval that only had two clamps. it was much harder to clamp down and one broke...it was over then. The cascade is much easier to clamp down and if one breaks you still have three more to compensate. another way it is built better over the fluval 305 is the connectors to the motor move around so you are able to move the tubing in many more directions in a much more comfortable easier way. With the fluval the tubing was so stiff and if I wanted to re arrange the tubing I would have to take it completely out the water which was a pain. And last the biggest is the primer. instead of a little pin with a finger side handle to push and pull the water in to get it started the cascade instead uses a button. I had a fluval one I had to prime it for so long the pin broke and I had to order a new one. it still didnt work. Because the cascade is a pump button you dont have to worry about that. Another huge factor the button is far superior is because you can use the ball of your foot to pump it instead of your hands. I did this and it started in less than 30 seconds no joke. With the fluval I have tried to get it started the first time for about twenty minutes and some people give up. the way the water flow changer is made is better than the fluval because the fluvals plastic piece that is thin can get bent easily in not slide up and down in the slit. you will have no issue with that here. 3. very very easy to set up. you can see the water fill in the canister the tubes are very flexible and easy to connect. IF YOU HAVE A PRIMING ISSUE SIMPLY STOP USING YOUR HANDS< STAND UP AND USE THE BALL OF YOUR FOOT. THIS WORKED FOR ME IN LESS THAN 30 SECONDS!!!! 4. Water flow rate is great. You can adjust the water flow for output and input separately so if you are using a spray bar and want to quiet it down at night you can slow it down. The spray bar is cool but loud if you use it above water. 5. Accessories for this are pretty cool. It comes with a spray bar thats probably about 3 feet long. At first I hooked it up and it was so long it sank down in the water and looked nothing like the cool pics of spray bars I see. Then I thought about that fact that I got 8 suction cups with connectors on them. I only needed one or two for the input output hose so I connected one to the end of the spray bar and it fit perfectly. Now my spray bar is level out of the water and I can create a kind of love tunnel type thing and it sounds much better and ALSO distributes the filtered water much better. These suction cups stay on, I had a hard time with the fluval suction cups and the cascade 100 provides you with 8. you only really need 3 t 5 at the most. 6. It looks nice its not loud and the base that it sits on is much much wider than the fluval so it wont accidentally fall over. thats a big deal if you have pets or kids CONs 1. the spray bar can be a little loud if you are using it above water to fall down into the tank but I like it and some people may as well. 2. the carbon pack provided does not fit all the space mostly in the canister. it covers about 88%. with the fluval it cam with a custom sack that was large enough to cover the whole tray inside. At some point you will have to replace the carbon so if you wanted you could buy your own carbon somewhere and use some kind of product like pantyhose to make your own bag if you cant find anything for perfect fit. But either way I dont think its a big deal so I didnt worry about it. In probably 2 hours the tank stops smelling. In 14 hours I have crystal clear water from a filter thats quieter, much much easier to set up and cleans better than anything I have had before. I recommend this and I'd buy another one. if you are having troubles priming make sure you twisted the correct way to connect the hoses as tight as you can. you twist to make it go up towards the part you just connected. make sure you have the LONG plastic piece on the intake part and the short one on the outtake. Make sure all four clamps on the base are on properly and USE THE BALL OF YOUR FOOT THE PRIME IT QUICK> Once you see a little water fill up you sont have to go as quick. After it fills up it will push water through the out put and you can then plug it in. Easiest set up I have ever had. Less than thirty seconds. If you cant get this its probably not connected right or you are not doing it quick. Use your feet If you cant afford this try the 700 and if thats still too much try the underwater cascade 600. the 600 is good to use if you have a cover and the hoses would get in the way. I have two on my other tank and they work awesome too and is more like a 3 in 1. I have done my research an am VERY happy with the 600 and 1000

It doesnt even work when it arrived. It broke and a burnt smell was coming out
I thought this would've been good because of the reviews but mine arrived and stopped working. After a few hours i could smell a burning smell so i turned it off, ive tried everything but it didnt work and they didnt even get back to me when i tried to contact them. Thats 80 pounds wasted, please dont waste your money guys you can get a cheaper alternative that actually works great.

How is it this popular if it's this bad?
I've been out of the aquarium game for about 10 years due to having kids, but I'm getting back into it now that they've grown and want to help with the hobby. I had an old eheim 2028, but it was missing many parts, making this cheaper than fixing that canister, so I went this way. Honestly I regret that decision. The build quality of this canister is shockingly poor. There is a 3/8" gap all the way around the filter baskets, so the water bypasses a large quantity of the water it pumps unless you shove some floss in the sides, and even then is that helping? The pump is quite noisy, but bearable, no where near as quiet as my old eheim however. I also really dont like the suction cup mounts it includes, there is no way to get stuff to sit straight since they have so much ability to move. However all that is livable, the biggest most annoying issue is that when you use the included quick disconnects to clean your filter media, it dumps a good amount of water on the floor. Yea, you can deal with this if your ready for it, but my old canister lost maybe a drop of water if you weren't careful, the pennplax is like 300ml or more of water. Wouldnt buy this again, but I cant return it since I've used it, so here we are, it'll likely work but I'll also probably end up building a sump to get rid of this piece of junk. Edit:. I now have a problem where the stock hoses have collapsed on themselves anywhere there is a slight bend. Means the filter is useless unless I spend money on hoses. Setting up a sump right now to ditch this junk once and for all. Not even 2 months old.

Waiting to hear from customer service
OK, I'm not an idiot, most of the time. I took my 55 gallon tank down over 10 years ago but in this time of covid I thought I should have something to stare at besides TV. I was running an Eheim filter before but was missing some parts and as with everything in life was just cheaper to buy a whole new system. I research everything thoroughly before deciding. This one came in with great reviews. Indeed nice, easy compact system with great in and out put. Priming was very easy as well once I discovered you had to do that before you plugged it in. DUH. Large sized hoses. Probably could have got away with the 500 as my new tank is only 40. But in cases like this more IS better. I would rate it a solid 5 stars but.... I CANNOT turn off the water flow when doing maintenance. As i said, I understand water flow, gravity, valves etc. Because I went with the Fluval Stratum I have had to constantly replace my floss. Three times. First time read the three steps to do maintenance with leaving the hoses in tank. Not that hard. Turn off input, stop water flow in, disconnect tubing. Did that and ended up hosing down my walls, floors while I grabbed something for the water. Have a solid top tank, so by the time I removed the light strip and yanked out the intake tube there were quite a few gallons of carefully cycled water lost. Took my shop vac, fans and heaters to cleanup the mess. The cannister was still full of water so when I disconnected the output hose same thing. Not as much though of course. Thought I MUST be doing something wrong so second time, read the steps again but same result. At least I was better prepared this time. Same with third time. I have always used external filters and they all work pretty well the same. Have contacted customer service so will see what they say and will update. Its driving me crazy. Unless I somehow got a faulty unit? Looking forward to having some dry towels again. Dec. 27 update: I have NEVER hated a product as much as this. In fact I have never really hated anything/anybody up till now. The reason I bought this was all the excellent reviews, plus the price was reasonable. Did some re-scaping and stirred up my stratum so thought might as well do the filter as well. All good. Two of us had to spell each other off, as someone else mentioned its like performing CPR. Well, after 2.5 hours, including the 3 times I reopened the cannister to make sure the gaskets were lined up, I had to call time of death. I actually have a blister on the heel of my hand. Was soooo mad I took it and threw it across the yard, shattering it. Lucky I had my 'toy' filter on the tank as well. At least the water had some filtration going until I could get out and buy a different one. Another problem of this one is that it has a sizable gap between the cannister wall and the media baskets where the water will pass through unfiltered. If you insist on using this I would recommend stuffing that gap with something- floss, strips of sponge.

Reviews made nervous ... I am not disappointed!
I was very anxious to order the filter as I was reading reviews and I've seen plenty where people had received broken products. The one I had received was unscathed. I was worried because the box was damaged by the time I received the product. (A shipping sticker was just stuck onto the side of the products box. Set up was really simple. It was set up within minutes. There were reviews that stated how difficult the priming button was. The button was very simple to compress and it primed without issues on the first try. It's been set up in my 110 gallon tank for nearly a month now and the water is crystal clear.

Excellent filter, very sturdy & easy to use
Excellent & powerful filter. Easy to put together and use. I concur with the other review here that said starting it was like performing CPR! But once started, it’s amazing. Ignore the other negative review about their dead fish, that was user error, you never switch filters without running new one in and getting it matured before disengaging the first one. This one has been running here for a few months and the tank is spotlessly clean, constantly perfect water tests & very happy fish! Mine is running down a waterfall before getting to the tank below & it’s plenty powerful enough.
