Custodia inclusa.

I'm basically reviewing this on behalf of my husband, but honestly I don't get it
He insisted he needed a "garlic peeler" and I'm like...isn't it just a dry skin? How can you not pull that off with your oily fingers in half a second? Not one to argue with the cook, I bite the bullet and get him one of these. I see hundreds of these colored rubber tubes on Amazon (Chinese garbo, yay) ranging in price from overpriced to lolwtfstfu. I figure the production quality variance in these things is practically nonexistent so I buy the cheapest one with a storage container because utensil drawers are notoriously disgusting. He loves it. He acts like I invented the wheel. His life has changed in ways he never could have dreamed, and as much as I want to bring him back to reality with a comment about how he could have taped a rubber pad into a burrito shape for free, ultimately it's not worth the trouble and the starry-eyed dance of a neophyte is one of those joys in life that fends off the development of a crotchety personality. I'll simply file this under "Reasons to be concerned about his problem-solving skills" and enjoy some skin-free garlic.

Witchcraft! (Only explanation)
HOW does this thing work so perfectly in literal seconds?! Witchcraft is clearly the answer. Or some very simple physics, based garlic science. Either way, this thing rocks, and is extremely fun to use!

Unbelievably Effective
I recently started cooking with garlic, but I HATED peeling the cloves by hand because it was so time consuming. Luckily, I found this handy-dandy little rascal. It’s actually fun to use!! I peel a complete head of garlic in a matter of minutes. Once you get a system for peeling the garlic, even cleanup of the discarded peels is easy!! After peeling the garlic, I use a microplane to mince the garlic for whatever dish I’m preparing, including homemade salad dressing. It’s EASY!!

Easy!
Peels garlic so easy. This came with my garlic press and I like it more than the press. Didn't know I needed it until I got to use it!

This Oxo Good Grips Garlic Peeler works well
I am a gadget junkie and I find this Oxo Good Grips Garlic Peeler to be one of the few gadgets I have tried lately that delivers success from what started as a cool idea. I use LOTS of garlic and though I do like dried garlic powder in some applications, there is no substitute for fresh. Sometimes, it was just too much for my lazy soul to deal with the sticky mess of cleaning and dicing garlic cloves and on those days I had to settle for dried. BUT, there are lots of new gadgets to squander my money on and I hit on this one. The other night was the innagural run of the peeler and I was making pasta with garlic sauteed in olive oil. You break the cloves from the bulb, insert 4-5 into the silicone manicotti shaped tool and roll on the counter top with your palms for several seconds. Dump the contents into a bowl to seperate the whole peeled cloves and avoid having the paper fly all over the kitchen. In less than 5 minutes, I had 1 WHOLE BULB of garlic cleaned and ready to run through the new garlic hand press that I ordered in conjunction with the peeler. The new press is the heavy duty variety that is capable of crushing the cloves unpeeled but with this handy device, peeling them first actually saved time and the mess of cleaning the residual paper peels from the press and that was probably 1/4 the time it would have taken to process the garlic using the old smash with a knife blade then chop method. Clean up was relatively easy by using my fingers and a small amount of dish soap to rub the peels of the inside in a jiffy. I am very happy with how this product functions. I also recommend this garlic pressTrudeau Garlic Press as an excellent mix of price/function. ************Update 6/4/10********************************* Last trip to the grocery I found some beautiful garlic with huge cloves (not quite elephant garlic size) and bought 6 bulbs. When I tried to peel these very large flattened cloves (1 clove was a snug fit in the tool), the peeler did not work as well as when peeling "normal" sized cloves. I experimented with it a bit using 1 and 2 cloves and found that it worked much better after cutting the cloves in half lengthwise BEFORE peeling. This also allows the above mentioned press to work better. No kidding, a single clove was a forced fit into the press before cutting and overflowed the press cavity even AFTER cutting the cloves. Im my opinion, this is not a serious negative since this is the first time I have found garlic this size available. I mention it for info purposes only.

Did not work on hardback garlic for me
The product itself was of good quality, but I was incredibly disappointed that it did not remove the skin from my hardneck garlic. The outer paper skin came off, but hardneck garlic has a thicker inner skin that this device wouldn't touch. I didn't say, globally, that it doesn't work on hardneck because I only grow the Music variety, so I don't have data to show it won't work on other varieties of hardneck andI don't have enough expertise to know if the thick, inner skin of Music is a feature of all hardneck garlic. Also I don't know if the time interval between harvest and peeling has any bearing on ease of skin removal; I was peeling mine four months from harvest. If anyone wants a tip, since hardneck doesn't store as long as softneck (the kind that stores sell), I smash the cloves with my knife for easy peeling then pulse the cloves in a big batch in my food processor with salt. After that I use a small cookie scoop and put scoops on a cookie sheet, freeze them, then put the balls in mason jars for my deep freeze. Then when I cook, I just pop however many balls out I want to use-easy! If you're wondering why I don't store them in oil, it is because doing this poses a great risk of making yourself ill from pathogens possibly present on garlic that grow readily in the anaerobic environment of the oil (state extensions have good information for consumers on this type of thing). It's hard to recreate the conditions commercial preparers use to safely pack garlic in oil.

Remember to cut the ends off the garlic
At first i was getting a little frustrated because i didn't realize i was supposed to cut the end off but once you do it comes off super easily with this! You have to be quite vigorous when rolling it on the counter but if you do it well it works pretty great, and its much less of a hassle to rinse this after than to have to deal with skin that won't come off!

Terrific product - go for it!
Go for it! It does the job extremely well! If others are giving it a bad rating, it's because they cant do a simple Job of following instructions.

Actually works!
I was a little dubious about this product, but a colleague introduced me to the item so thought i'd give it a whirl, as many cloves are small you can't be bothered with the hastle of peeling them...but gave it a whirl yesterday - fantastic, peeled the cloves really well, only put in 3 as this is recommended - yet to try more, but how many cloves do you ever need in one go - FAB!!!

Wow!
If you're anything like me, you love garlic but detest peeling it, then this is the product for you. The one thing i dread about peeling garlic is that amount of time it takes, everything it touches becomes a bit sticky and you're forever trying to scrub off the smell of garlic from your hands. I was really skeptical at first, but willing to try anything to simplify my life. I'm all about making things as simple as possible. The peeler comes in a plastic storage box to protect it. This peeler is incredibly easy to use, even my 13 year uses it effortlessly. All you do is put the garlic clove in the tube, place on a hard flat surface, place the palm of your hand on top and apply pressure and just roll back and forth a couple of times. Your garlic comes out peeled and the peeler is really easy to clean. You can even turn it inside out to clean it more thoroughly. If you're a garlic lover, especially one with problems with your hands , this is a must have gadget for your kitchen.
