Broken lock couldn't be replaced by seller
This jewelry box is very large and attractive. However, the locking mechanism in the lid was smashed when I received it. Because the jewelry box was out-of-stock, this item couldn't be replaced. (I was given the option to return it. I believe that Amazon did what they could for me and have no complaint about Amazon.) I contacted Novica, the seller, directly and asked them to send me a replacement for the broken part of the lock, which they wouldn't do because I had ordered it from Amazon. I can see that they sell jewelry boxes made by the same person with the same lock that is on the one that I bought. I am disappointed that this simple matter couldn't be taken care of by Novica.

Not as nice as you'd expect
For this price, I was expecting better quality craftsmanship. The leather workmanship is cool. However, the box does not sit flat on any table. One corner is higher than the opposite corner by as much as 1/8". So anytime you touch it, it rocks back and forth. The lock is super cheap and difficult to use. You have to look inside the keyhole to line up to get it to work properly. The drawers do fit well so those all seem to be square. The item was well packaged in a very think plain Jane cardboard box. When I took it out I noticed it didn't look nearly as nice as the pictures on the product page. The pictures make the leather look rich and luxurious, but mine looks dull and dried out like it's been sitting in a hot warehouse for a long time. I tried contacting the seller for advice on whether I could apply a leather conditioner to revive it, but the seller has no contact information. There is no way to contact seller as far as I can see on Amazon's website. I did decide to keep it. I'll probably use some felt pads to level the crooked base and I might try a small bit of leather conditioner on a small section on the bottom side corner. It is pretty cool, but for the price I was expecting much better quality and presentation.

Beautiful Work of Art - Minus Shipping Damage
It arrived today and same one as advertised, very beautiful. However, it did get some minor shipping damage. I had them put it into an Amazon box for delivery to be discreet as I live in an apartment building and the original box was allowed to bounce around inside without any additional packaging to hold it in place. The original box was labeled "Fragile" and "This side up", the Amazon box had its usual "nothing", could it have been the Amazon packaging (?) Upon opening, the first thing I noticed was the leather corner on the lid was separated and I was able to glue it back, the second was internal damage to the wood and the lock, the wood I can put a little stain on to blend it in but the lock looks like it needs to be replaced. Since it was the last one, I'll keep it with a little disappointment but overall pleased with this work of art.

Inquire about product description/photos to make sure you are getting what you ordered
We were very excited to get this jewelry box, and it's a huge box for storing jewelry and other trinkets and keepsakes. The build and craftsmanship seems very good and no doubt it took a skilled workman to create it. At first it appears to be all carved in wood--but on closer examination, all the designs are carved in leather (!), and it's expertly shaped and applied to the wood box. The one reason we are not giving it 5 stars, is that the carving designs on the one we received are not at all like the product photos (see attached photos for what we received). The floral/vegetative vines that wind around the box in the product photo are what we expected (or something similar). Instead, the chest top has a leering Incan(?) god that appears to be holding chickens in each hand. It's not the most attractive design--but you don't really notice until you examine it closely. While it's no doubt authentic artwork, we were disappointed to receive a different design than we expected. The other thing is that it was supposed to have a National Geographic certificate of authenticity. Ours did not, and we notified Amazon. I expect both of these issues will get straightened out with corrected product descriptions and photos. The large top compartment is quite deep and can hold smaller jewelry boxes, sunglasses (& cases) and other larger items. The top has a mirror that covers the entire underside of the lid, so is quite large as well. It also has a small jewelry lock and key for the lid. The drawers are also roomy, but don't come with any organizers--so you could arrange or subdivide them with ring holders or other things to keep your jewelry from becoming a jumble. Overall it's a unique jewelry chest, and seems built to last.
