Does what it's supposed to
Install was easy. Needed to tension 2 "notches" to get it to close our 8' tall wooden gate. The tension technique of turning a bolt head and wedging into place with a small metal bar is kinda goofy. Tensioning is also a bit dangerous and you can pinch your fingers if not careful, so hold the little bar with needle nose pliers when inserting. I am not confident the tension bar won't fall out with repeated use because there is no retaining mechanism other than friction, but if it does, I'll 3d print a proper clip that can't fall out.

Good product - easy to install
I used this to make the gate to my backyard self-closing. It was easy to install and to adjust. When installing make sure the end marked "Top" is at the upper position of the spring. The spring works by spiral rotation and pushes the gate closed. The adjustment needs the small bar provided with the spring. Its purpose is to go between the wood and the flat of the adjusting screw. It must be inserted when you reach the desired positon of the adjusting screw or the spring will revert to its initial value. You may need to insert the tip of the bar to hold the screw while you reposition your wrench so you can continue turning the screw. The maximum turns of the screw is three flats. If you need to reduce the tension, remove the small bar (difficult sometimes) and the spring will go back to its original value.

Sturdy, well-made, easy to install, powerful closer
Well-made product from a trusted name — Stanley tools. Don’t believe negative reviews. People have time to write negative reviews but not to read the very clear, well-illustrated instructions. No, the bolt won’t fall out if you install it right side up (marked “top”). No, the spring won’t stretch out because it installs on the inside of the gate and pushes the gate closed. If someone says the spring stretched out, they obviously installed it on the outside, contrary to instructions. Oh well. My gate was metal so I needed to drill 9/64” holes for the screws. It seems very powerful. When first installed, it did nothing. I tightened the bolt one third of a turn and it now slams the gate shut with authority. The garbage men often left the gate open which could allow the dog out. No more.

Works well, but engineering flaw.
The 14” spring worked well for about a week. Then the bolt head pins popped out, both of them. Each at a different time. As indicated in previous reviews, there is no mechanical means of attachment to the spring. They are press fit. The engineers who designed this missed the mark. If this problem were addressed this could be a great product. I ended up drilling a small hole through the pin. Once pounded back into the spring I inserted SS pins through the small holes to prevent the bolt pin from popping out of the spring. Don’t need a design engineering degree to solve problem. I used a drill press and slow speed. Would probably be quite difficult to drill with an electric hand held drill. Will update and comment on durability in a few months.

Install Properly
This may be a good gate closure, yet was a complete fail for me. I can't entirely blame the product as my installation was not perfect. Granted there were no good instructions. I would use as a very light gate closure and watch a YouTube on installation to figure out what way to torque the tension. I installed doors for over 25 years , so I figured this was a piece of cake. I just slammed it on, broke it and moved on. Since I am not certain it was the product or my own error take my review with a grain of salt.

Easy for the most part.
Little confusing to set up. Also, dont lose your little black pin like thing. You will need an adjustable wrench and a drill preferably, screwdriver just takes longer. Make sure the part that is labeled top is on the right hand side of the door and the bottom is to the left attaching to the lower part of the fence post. If your fence post is on the right make sure the top is on the fence post and the lower part of spring is attached to lower part of door. Tighten well and watch your face. It is a spring after all.

Works well
Definitely works well, but only for a normal sized (~3' wide) wood gate. Due to the weight of my gate (over sidewalk, closer to 4' wide) it had to be tightened more than usual and still doesn't work great. I'm probably going to have to add a second spring and a bumper so the door doesn't slam closed if I can't fine tune it enough. Other than heavier gates, this works very well and is extremely simple to install and set up. Much better deal than spring loaded hinges, really doesn't look bad either.
