This is a great product - despite the confusion about packaging and contents.
Seachem Matrix is a great natural medium for colonizing both nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria so important for good water chemistry and the health of one's aquarium inhabitants. I noticed many users have complained about receiving an adulterated product, and frankly I thought I had received one as well. I called Seachem and got the scoop. Here's what I found out: Matrix is a natural, mined product. The mineral has natural variations in size and color. When mined, black Obsidian is sometimes included in the take. The Obsidian is removed by hand before packaging, but some slips into the container from time to time. The packaging does not have a tamper-proof seal beneath the lid. When you open the jar, you immediately see the product. Matrix is sold by volume and not by weight. A minimum weight is listed in the literature (e.g.: 1 liter of Matrix = 400 gram net weight) but this is required by law, and has nothing to do with the actual weight of the product, which can vary greatly due to Matrix absorbing moisture from the air, for example. The 1 liter of Matrix I received weighted 967 grams out of the jar. When you receive Matrix, expect it to vary in color, size, and that there may be a few dark or black rocks in the jar. Now for the actual use. Matrix provides a tremendous amount of surface area. The outer surfaces and crevices provide a very hospitable environment for the aerobic (oxygen consuming) nitrifying bacteria that make up the 'bio filter' so critical to breaking down Ammonia to Nitrite, and Nitrite to Nitrate. It's benefit doesn't stop there. At the end of the aerobic portion of the Nitrogen Cycle, nitrate is left to build up in the water column, and is one of the major pollutants that dictate the frequency and quantity of water changes. Nitrate can be reduced to Nitrogen gas - but this is an anaerobic (oxygen deprived) process requiring another type of bacteria. Nitrate laden water seeps into the core of Matrix after having been stripped of oxygen by the aerobic bacteria on the medium's surface. This oxygen-poor environment is perfect for colonizing anaerobic bacteria that consume Nitrate and release inert Nitrogen gas. This final step in the Nitrogen Cycle helps control the buildup of Nitrate in the aquarium, contributing markedly to the long term health of it's inhabitants.

Gets rid of nitrates!
This review is meant for both Seachem's Stability and Seachem's Matrix. I helped my son set up his 120 gallon African cichlid tank. We went through about 5 or 6 different filters and settled on an Eheim. From what we had learned from our research on tank setups we had understood that the filter media, once properly colonized, will remove ammonia and nitrites from the water but will not remove nitrates (ammonia gets converted by one kind of bacteria in the filter to nitrites and in turn another kid of bacteria will convert the nitrites into nitrates). The only way to reduce the nitrate levels is by either having live plants or even better, periodic water changes. We were also told that if we have a deep enough substrate then after about 6 months or so, if we get lucky, deep in the substrate will develop a bacterial colony that will help reduce the nitrates. As I continued my research I stumbled on to the Seachem web site. I was impressed by the specs of their Matrix product. It claimed to be able to support bacteria that will eliminate nitrates from the water. Great! Now all I have to do is buy this filter media, wait six months and I'm all set. Not only that, but from what I've read on the Internet, it could take up to two whole months for the ammonia and nitrites eating bacteria to properly develop. Well, luck for me, I found the Stability product. I added both the Matrix filter media and Stability to my setup (Stability needs to be added to the water on a daily basis for one week) and tested the water after one week. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the ammonia and nitrites levels had dropped down to 0! My son was telling me not to bother testing for nitrates because it's guaranteed that they'll be there. I tested anyway and guess what? Zero! This works like magic!

Best Filter Media
This is the best filter media out there, gives the largest surface area for bacteria.

authentic product, large container, good price
Its matrix, there are lots of discussions on what is the best product, read forums to decide. If you decide on Matrix this is a good price for the product in quantity. I set up a 60gal corner tank with a sump and wanted mass amount of biological. This fit the bill. I will put it in a drainage pipe filter sleeve (HomeDepot 7$) with the ends band tied. There have been a couple of posts about this being authentic because there was not seal. Mine was also that way and contained volcanic glass, and other rocks in addition to the Matrix. I contacted the manufacture. Here it their response for the seal on the container: "It is possible to have either style depending on the container and lid style used for that batch of product as we do have both options for packaging." Regarding the other rocks including volcanic glass:"It is fine to use the Matrix you received. Your pictures do look like our product. Matrix is a mined, natural stone so there will commonly be some variation in the stones within a jar. The obsidian you found in your container is commonly mixed in when we receive it; we remove it before packaging, so it is unusual but not unheard of for some to slip through and end up in the container." & "here will always be a few different stones mixed in with the lighter matrix, but these don't present a problem. Matrix is packaged to contain extra media so even if a portion is denser stones, it shouldn't affect how it functions in the filter or these can be removed if you prefer.' I hope this helps others wondering if you have the real deal.

Really cannot fathom the cost of random rocks and dust...
Firstly it is a pricey product. Tub was not sealed when bought so could've been refilled. After over an hour of constant rinsing and cleaning, it was still dirty and caused a huge dust storm when adding only a handful to sump chamber. Rocks are not designed at all but seem to be random stones mixed with some low quality pomace. There were lumps of hard rock (non porous), slate, some rust and even shards of glass/jet that would be dangerous for fish to cut on or breathe in (see pic). Size is inconsistent and soberly requires media bag as there is a LOT of tiny pieces and dust. All in all the most disappointing purchase I've ever made from a big marine brand.

Check the contents!
Firstly, I've had great success with genuine Seachem Matrix and only have good things to say about it. The latest batch that I received however was not the genuine product I've used previously. The container came unsealed, which is normal for the Seachem Matrix bought from either Amazon or my local fish shop. Unfortunately, this had allowed the replacement of a significant proportion of the actual product with small dense rocks of equal size by a very naughty person who I imagine had then returned to Amazon before it was shipped to me. I've seen other reviews where this has happened so would recommend emptying out the container and checking all is as it should be before adding to your aquarium.

Fantastic product
It works, and works well. I put only mechanical filtration and the rest 2 out of 3 trays on my x2 canister filters filled with matrix. Was able to see result same day.
