Luby Extra Large Toaster Oven
UPDATE July 24, 2022. After two years and 3 months my Luby toaster oven died. Within that same time period I had previously gone through two other toaster ovens mostly due to the use of internal plastic holders for the on/off knob. After a period of heat exposure, the ovens simply would not stay off, flipping back on faster than I could turn them off. Except for the fact the temperature apparently hadn't been calibrated (I use a oven thermometer so that worked for me) I loved the Luby oven and used it more than once a day. I even roasted a turkey in it. Some reviewers recently complained about the rack not holding dishes being baked so they fell. Even for the first Luby I inserted both racks into the same slot since I'd probably never need to use them separately and I never had that problem, not even with the heavy turkey. BTW they now pack the crumb tray for the bottom along with the roasting pan and racks since apparently some reviewers missed the place in front to lift the bottom up for cleaning in the first Luby's shipped out. Anyway, when the Luby died, I didn't hesitate to order another one. I always open such large unwieldy items over the bed and guess what? The entire bottom seam was smashed in along the bottom and the back. The deepest spot of the indent was 3" deep. The seam had completely pulled apart in that spot and was sharp. I took photos which I am sending in to Amazon tonight because this oven had to be packed with that extensive damage. A whollop creating that much damage would have wrecked the box into smithereens which was pristine so yes it had to be packed with that damage. The bottom and back are also metal so that brand new Luby oven took quite an impact to sustain damage that extensive. Amazon as usual with their excellent customer service replaced the oven which I've now used successfully for over a week but I've kept the box just in case. Here's the thing though. I read a lot of reviews and more and more often reviewers are complaining about receiving damaged and/or dirty or deceptive items. I've shopped at Amazon since the mid 90's--back when everyone snickered that a book store would never work on-line. I watched fascinated as Jeff Bezos built an empire that is depended on world wide. I along with so many others happily shop here all the time. I mention this history and the reviews because it is time that manufacturers of products and retailers like Amazon that sell those products demand that damaged items like that oven are no longer shipped into the country. Putting a brand new oven of this size into a land fill should never, ever happen. There is no excuse whatsoever for packing an item with the extensive damage that Luby oven had going on. It is wasteful of materials, time, money and creates a great deal of mistrust especially of imported items. That damaged oven broke my heart for a while. Seriously. The new Luby is shiny with new knobs but otherwise works and looks the same. The temps are more accurate than on the previous oven. Hopefully this new oven will give me the good service that the dead one did and if it does, then I'd order another Luby in a nano second. Just please everyone stop packing and shipping into the country damaged items. I took off stars for the damage but the oven itself is a 5-star item. I really love it and enjoy using it! PREVIOUS REVIEW: Since I only use toaster ovens for baking and am of the opinion that most toaster ovens try to do too many things, I was happy to find this Luby. Not only is it especially built to bake, it is huge, easily holding a small turkey. What an asset this oven would be to families cooking over the holidays or wanting to bake a dish in their regular oven and a cake or dish in the Luby. Or, as in my case, to do all their baking in it since toaster ovens are a thousand times cooler to use than a stove oven especially in the summer. They heat up quicker and cool down faster as well. This oven looks nice too and actually looks more expensive than it is. The two doors open independently of each other and mine stay open regardless of position but certainly stay open when pulled totally to the side. Having them open to the side is preferable to having the door drop down which takes up counter space. I found the instruction booklet to be too skimpy since this oven is different from most. It has a knob for both the top burner and the lower burner. So, then, to bake a cake should one place the rack in the center of the oven like one would do in a stove oven and turn on both burners? Not clear in the manual so I set out to experiment. On the Luby using both burners at the same temperature means the oven is 50 degrees hotter than that chosen on both knobs. That is according to the oven temp gauge I've used for years. There is no way to know if it runs hot due to both burners being on or if the oven temp is off. Regardless, continuing my experiment, I've learned where to set the temp knobs to get the desired cooking temp. The temp gauges are marked off every 50 degrees. When I want 425, a popular baking temp, I found that spot and marked it off with a permanent marker. If that wears off, I'll use some acrylic paint! (Yes, this oven is worth the additional effort!) To all those complaining about not getting a crumb tray, indeed there is a tray included. It fits so well that it looks like the bottom of the oven but there is a small lever in the front to lift it up and out of the oven. The roasting pan and the two racks that come with the oven are good quality especially for a toaster oven. At present, rather than storing one rack, I'm using both of them, one on top of the other, in the middle slot. They hold a lot of weight without feeling flimsy. The roasting tray is stored for future use. It is heavy anough to hold that small turkey and is nicely enameled. As to the top and sides getting hot, IMO this oven gets no hotter than any other toaster oven I've owned. In fact, the door to my stove oven gets too hot to touch as well so over the years I've attempted to only touch handles regardless of which oven I'm using (notice I said attempted LOL). I do have it sitting on glass and have glass on top for safety reasons as I have for all my toaster ovens. This oven does not have a light but few I've owned have had lights. Usually toaster ovens are placed on counters where there is sufficient light in the room to look into the oven so personally I do not consider the lack of a light a negative as some might. One probably could toast in this oven while it's preheating but I can't speak to that as I gave up years ago on trying to toast in these ovens as I was spending so much time trying to get toast "just right" that I broke down and bought an old-timey regular toaster! So far I've baked two pizzas, a cake, biscuits twice, a tray of cookies and cornbread in the Luby and all cooked perfecting by checking the temp with my temp gauge before placing the items in the oven. I've baked frozen fries and warmed up left-overs in it, also with great success. I've saved the best for last! There is no stay-on sticker on the oven so most of us assumed we had to use the timer when baking. That was driving me crazy and I was actually considering sending this oven back when I made a remarkable discovery! When turning the timer off one night the knob moved slightly to the left after the ding sounded. Okay. So then why did that happen? I turned the timer knob to the left so that it was pointing at the little stamp that says "timer" and guess what!! The oven stayed on. And on. For over an hour. So folks, we indeed do have a stay-on function on this oven. Thank goodness because I really liked it otherwise. Now I love it I have no idea why the manufacturer removed the stay-on sticker from the oven (some posters say they saw pics of such a sticker) and instead put a timer sticker there because having the oven stay stay on is a real asset. Using the stay-on function means I can set a personal ti

Only lasted 1 year
I love this oven. The only problem is that after 1 year of use the sidewalls inside the oven now bow out and I have a hard time using it with any kind of a heavy dish. The racks won't hold because the sidewalls bow. Of course, I cannot find my warranty info and I am outside of the return window. Not worth the money if you only get 1 year of use from it.

Ok
Works great but it could use some improvements. Their is no light inside the oven and the doors don’t lock when open so you gotta be really extra careful when taking out hot food. Very convenient since my oven doesn’t work. It fits big dishes but it doesnt do well with frozen items. Thawed foods would have best results. Overall I do love my this thing.

A year later and an update. [Wonderful Oven I am so glad I got it.] This is not a convection oven
UPDATE: August 02, 2022 Removed 1 star because of durability I have had this oven about 14 months now. I have used this at least twice a week since we got it. It worked great, I baked everything in it, except it just wouldn't cook baked potatoes in a reasonable amount of time for some reason. Anyway, about the first week in July 2022, I noticed that things weren't cooking properly, so I did the normal, added time and turned up the heat. I have now used an oven thermometer and with the oven set at 475, both top and bottom, the oven is only reaching 350. I still use it because most of what I use it for cooks at 350, but I have made adjustments to what I cook in it. When I found this oven, I was looking for a convection oven. I am so glad I got this instead. This is a great oven. It is large enough to use regular size pans (cookie sheets, cake pans etc.) I bake at the same temp and time as in my regular oven. You can set the timer or set it to stay on. I like the timer feature. I have this in my pantry; that is part of an enclosed porch; so I can use it without heating the whole house. I saw in some of the reviews that the shelves were flimsy and broke, but they are as good as any in the other counter ovens I have used. What seems to be the problem with them is that they are slightly too short for the length of the oven. I was thinking of maybe wrapping the ends with foil and see if that helped, but I haven't done it yet. Because they are short, the racks will sometimes come out and drop when you try to take something out of the oven, so make sure and have a good oven mitt or holder. The right hand door tends to close about half way when you are taking stuff out. I got a short bungee cord and hooked it to a handle on the counter I have and when I open the oven door, I open the right side first and catch it with the bungee, no problem. It is probably big enough to cook a turkey in, but I really don't think I would. With something that big and heavy, I am pretty sure the racks would drop out of the slots when you tried to take the pan out. I have cooked a large roast in it though. Another thing is that not all of temperature settings are marked. It is marked in 100 degree increments, starting at 150. 150, 250. 350 & 450. So when I need 375, I figure about a fourth of the distance between 350 & 450. It has worked so far. If you are really concerned, get an oven thermometer. Reading back over this, this sounds like a negative review, but it isn't really, I just listed the things I have noticed I have had to deal with. On the up side, it seems to cook at the correct temps and for the correct length of time. I didn't have to buy special pans to fit it, it runs on 110 current and doesn't trip my breakers in my old house. The time feature is great, because I don't always hear the ding. When it is done, the oven shuts off if you use the timer. When you set the heat, the oven won't come on until the either the timer is set, or the setting is set to stay on. I think that is suppose to be a safety feature.

Great if you need a large oven
The oven arrived in perfect condition and on time. I've used the oven several times. I use both the top and bottom burner for baking and it cooks exactly like a regular oven. The wire racks are a bit flimsy but I just double them up for baking large casseroles or other heavy dishes. My only real complaint is the right door does not stay open so I have to prop it open when putting food in or out of the oven so I don't burn myself. It easily holds my large cookie sheets and 13x9 baking dish. Very happy. I just hope it lasts.

Great KISS product.
The information on this site for this product, is extremely vague and contradicting. It says both 1800w and 2200w for same product. It also says white, black and silver. And both 16 slices and 18 slices for same product. It's not obvious what come with it since many reviewers mentioned not getting a crumb tray and there is no mention of anything except the photo. So this is what I got. It is black and silver. That's what I wanted, but the order said I was getting white, so I'm happy. It uses 1800w, I tested it a full power up to 450deg both elements and did not trip my 15A circuit breaker. I also inserted a reliable baking thermometer and found the oven temperature very reliable. As mentioned in instructions, the oven smells really bad on first use, as the protective coating on eliments burn off. So I recommend breaking it in at full heat before putting food in. And be prepared to ventalate, as it does smell strong. It comes with 2 racks a baking tray and yes a crumb tray. The doors are strong, fit straight and close properly, seperatly with magnets. And it's size makes it easy to clean, with my big hands. I love the old school mentality,. No useless pre-programmed buttons that don't apply or work. Oh, and the picture, says the top element thermostat is 450 and bottom 350. That's not a misprint both dails are 450deg, but the bottom element alone, may not get the oven to 450. This is not a problem, this oven works great. I am completely satisfied with this large but simple to use product at the moment. Except for 2 small things. The feet are slippery, so it's really easy to push around, so you need to be carefull So I put some rubber pads under the feet, that fixed the problem. And the direction indicators on the knobs, are the same color as the knobs, making them difficult to see. I put very small dabs of white cilicon caulking, as shown in the picture, now I can see them. This oven is a great example of a KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid ) mentality, and I love it. The photos, show the unit with my pizza stone (not included) on bottom rack And a black non stick liner(not included) in the crumb tray.

Bigger is better... but.
I now have the Luby oven since March 2020. With Covid I use it every day, sometimes twice. Because of independent top/bottom controls my bread is never too browned on top while undercooked internally. Oven roasted potatoes come out beautifully . Ditto for cakes. Love the control this oven gives me!. Love its size! I now use it almost exclusively. It does get a lot of use. But there are some issues with mine. 1. The grills are far too weak to hold a casserole. Mine have given way and collapsed. That could have been very dangerous . Please fix that!! 2. The numbers by the control panel came off when I rubbed them lightly just with my finger. That should not be. Therefore a three star. Still, I prefer this oven to any other of its type and I can't complain about the price. As a matter of fact I would be willing to pay a little more for my wish list below. My wish list? Internal light and non stick or a better quality steel inside. (I don't know if it is advised, but I now use Easy off on it), improved racks, stay on feature...

Wow
This is an amazing appliance. It's way more than a simple toaster oven. It's huge inside and works like a regular oven. Heats up to 450 and has a broiler as well. Quality and performance is excellent.

Came dented
I have not used it yet weather's too hot. It came dented yet the box was in perfect condition. Aside from the dent, it looks fantastic. The size is amazing. I'm a bread baker looking forward to see how this oven does. It has a bit of a gap between doors not sure if I should be concerned with this or not. I will repost an update when I use it. It looks like it should be easy too clean racks seem pretty weak. But price and size are great.

Not worth the money
First unit was replaced as damaged badly. Second unit sent was damaged as well. Very poorly made. After 20 minutes on preheat the unit only reached half the desired temperature. The doors would not close properly and heat was escaping. The instructions were vague and hard to understand. I would not recommend.
