A great addition, but to make it better..........

This is an updated version of Lionel's timeless Gateman which has come in several versions over the decades. You do have to buy a piece of plug and play train track unless you all ready have one. With that piece you can use the included button to make the Gateman come out of his house whenever you want, BUT to make him come out automatically when the train passes you will need to buy the ACTIVATOR TRACK PACK which includes 1 straight with the plug and play piece and 2 half tracks which trigger the Gateman. Also, in some pics, Lionel leads you to believe the Gateman's lantern lights up. It does NOT. But, the gatehouse and Christmas Tree do. Overall, a nice addition to a Christmas set, but does require the purchase of extra items to make it work to its fullest.

2nd important update about this product!!

I received the Polar Express Gateman and like everyone else......could not get it to work. The gateman light would turn on but the gateman initially either stayed outside or inside but he never did what he was supposed to do. I followed the directions of another customer and took out the silver bar and it still did not work even though he was correct in saying this (confirmed by Lionel customer service). I spoke to Lionel today after watching various videos and checking out the train forums because I could not figure out the problem. After confirming I had removed the silver bar, they suggested turning the two 5" side pieces with the break in the track to the opposite side of where you plug in the gatemen to the activator pack (which is opposite what the directions tell you to do). I guess Amazon got a batch of these that the factory put in something opposite of what they should have (a quality control issue for Lionel, not Amazon). After hours of working on this, the gateman works like a charm. The light stays on continuously when the train is running and the gateman appears when the train goes by. As a follow up, I attached a second moving accessory to this set up and it did not work until I turned the 2 five inch side pieces back to the same side as where you plug it in, so the gateman is the only accessory you need to turn these side pieces opposite of what the directions say. The downside to this is that you need an activator set dedicated to this one accessory (there is a plug you can buy that lets you add up to 3 accessories). You can add accessories with lights, but not another moving accessory that relies on the train to trigger the motion.

One hit wonder

Works perfect on the first pass over the activator track. After that the conductor rarely made another appearance and he never stays out for the pass. It’s a quick door open and close…sometimes nothing happens.

Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2020 Verified Purchase I am a long time Lionel fan. My grandfather gave me all his trains before he passed many years ago. Every Christmas we set up the trains the same as we did when I was a child. Every year I buy a couple of things to improve the set up under the tree. This year I bought the Area 51 search tower and a plug and play activator track. The tower ran all the time and was not activated by the train. In the attached photo you can see one of my old activator tracks, below is the new one. As you can see they (China) left the silver tie bar between the outer rails. This makes it a regular straight track. Remove the tie bar and everything works fine. I figured I can't be the only one out there that has this problem. I hope this helps! Happy Trains! review image

Casually Cute

The figure would not come out of the building. I used the proper 6" Fastrack insulated track sections on each side of the connector track. Sometimes the guy would come out and stay out. I tried forcing the guy to come out and that was a waste of time. I ended up keeping the door open to keep the man out to make it look OK and the lights stay ON whle power is on the track. My Lionel all metal Gateman works perfectly with my Lionel O27 track so I thought this would work as good. I am very disappointed since this goes with my Polar Express train running under our family room's Christmas tree. For the quality, the price is way too high!

If You Like A Challenge

Once again Lionel has reminded me why I gave up buying their product. I have/had been a Lionel train collector for over 40 years. Beware when purchasing. This was a 2nd unit as the gateman would not close. Decided I would open to see what was going on. 2 things wrong here, one was the spring they used but also and more importantly was the shaft that projects the man out. For 3/4 of the way the rod moved pretty freely, HOWEVER, the last 1/4' or so it was very difficult to move back in completely. (partially explains why he would not retract in). We lubricated the shaft and it improved somewhat. We still however had retraction issues, went to local hardware store and bought some different springs to test and after trying a few and adjusting those, we were able to get the gateman to work properly. Lionel needs to learn that if they want to encourage people to get into model railroading they need to build a better product, or at least one that works when you get it out of the box. I only bought this because we purchased a Lionel Polar Express set years ago (that had issues oob as well) and thought this would be a nice addition, plus I wanted to give them another chance. They won't get me again, shame on them!

Product stopped working within hours

This product stopped working within a few hours of set-up. I have no luck with Lionel Customer Service, so now I have an expensive static display.
