Perfect starter set and great for the holidays
I just ordered this set in November 2022. I don't know if I received an older version of the set before the magnetic track or if Lionel updated this set to remove it. Whatever the case is, the set I received came with Lionel's Fastrack system instead of the magnetic track that got a lot of bad reviews and complaints about connectivity. The Fastrack can be a little tricky to line up the rail connectors at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's a snap. I can see how the magnetic track would have much lower reviews, but the Fastrack system seems very robust. The audio effects are not amazing quality, but the kids are entertained by them. The chuffing sound is awful so I turned that off right away. The announcement sounds are okay. The whistle and bells are pretty good - the kids love driving it around the track and blowing the whistle. It's not a very detailed set but that's to be expected for a starter set. The lights are actually pretty amazing for a starter set. The flicker-free lighting is very steady and looks very nice. The directional lighting on the engine is a nice touch. I bought this as a starter set for the kids to see if it would be something they enjoy before investing a ton of money in building a higher quality model railroad. With the ability to use either the controller/bluetooth or DCC, this train will be right at home even using conventional track if we use it for future projects. But, if it turns out the kids get bored with it and don't want to build model railroads, the set is still perfect for setting up around the Christmas tree so it will certainly see use for many years to come! There is no smoke system, which is something I really would have liked to see. Without smoke and with the audio quality, I have a hard time giving it 5 stars. Update: I contacted Lionel and confirmed they are updating this set to include FasTrack and not MagneTrack to ensure there aren't connectivity issues so any newer sets shouldn't have that problem! Second Update: This train has been running all day every day under the tree in our cubicle area at work for the past couple weeks. It's been kicked so many times it's ridiculous. The little metal contact strips on the axles to power the car lights got bent a bit, but the trucks and couplers have really stood up well to the abuse! The axles now squeak a bit sometimes, I think because the contacts got bent so I'll have to try and readjust them again. By the end of the week, the track and wheels get dirty enough that the lights on the cars start to dim slightly in some spots when the momentarily lose power. The flicker-free lighting really helps to diminish that effect though. One thing I found I don't like as much is that the wireless controller has to remain on all the time. If the train doesn't see the controller after a few moments, it stops and starts chiming. I don't like draining the batteries in the controller all day if the train is just going to run constantly around the Christmas tree. The locomotive has an option to be controlled by the tracks though, so maybe switching to a track that allows it to be constantly on without the controller will be better. Still highly recommended!

Great train but track issues!
I really like this train, but it does have track issues with the magnelock. The train looks and runs good plus it has great sound. The remote control is a nice feature compared to others. When I received the train I decided to test it out before Christmas. The train would run a little ways and then stop. The electric flow through the tracks was very spotty. I tested each track section with a multimeter for continuity and found 4 sections that did not have continuity on one of the rails. I attached a wire underneath the track to the little copper strips. This helped a bit but still had 2 unreliable connections between the tracks. I then bought some Atlas brand 100/83 universal rail joiner clips for HO scale Qty = 48 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0006N73KQ?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details. This fixed all the track issues and now runs great. You can cut the little tabs as shown in the lionel manual and better pictures on here. I used a pair of flush cut micro wire cutters which made the job easy - Hakko-chp-170. I went ahead and put the track clips on all the tracks. The magnelock tracks could be a great idea if lionel would improve quality control and make some design tweeks. But all in all this is a great train set that looks and runs great once you make the track repairs. Hope this helps someone who is having similar issues. Lionel's tech support isn't really any help. All they want you to do is send it in for repairs. The HO track clips are the best solution.

Lionel Quality
The set is not a highly detailed set, however, it is of great quality and the magnetic track system is ingenious. The rail sounds are great and loud and clear and the remote makes operation super easy. The one major drawback would be the track system although ingenious additional tack is super expensive with no switches available. These sets are getting hard to find so either Lionel has stopped producing them or there is a shipping problem. However, you can buy Kato, Bachmann, and old school sectional track for super reasonable prices. At 241.00 this set is a great deal as the locomotive itself is 200.00.

Finnicky track
The track is pretty finnicky. In this day and time, trains should run and not glitch like the HO stuff from my childhood, circa early 80’s. Spent a lot of money and saw the disappointment I once had as a child when it cuts on and off. This is even after placing on 3/4” plywood that doesn’t “give.”

Great train!
Would be a 5 if it had a steam option, but otherwise it’s a great train. Love the magnetic tracks!

Train coupling
Train coupling Very Spring comes out very easy and hard to fine once it falls out the track has dead spots sometimes and the train will stop running when it comes to the dead spot

should have researched better
the train is great but the track and lack of available accessories makes it a poor choice.
