A nearly obsolete way to use this

It works for mounting my old home phone on the wall box that is a little too close to the Formica counter in the kitchen. The review by JustinBuyer on September 16, 2020 has better pictures of the extension ring. The description at the top is wrong and misleading (at least it is now, maybe it will be corrected) "Legrand-Pass & Seymour 1594TPAW L520Cgcm Heavy-Duty Ground Continuity Monitoring (Gcm) Connector" It should be "Legrand-Pass & Seymour 1594TPAW 7.0 cu. in. Extension Ring, White" The "L520Cgcm Heavy-Duty Ground Continuity Monitoring (Gcm) Connector" is for a twist-lock plug - very different.

Take It Or Leave IT

It’s amazing when sometimes things work out when you are backed into a corner. I needed a box extender ASAP to replace a single light switch with a double switch for a new ceiling fan install and control the fan and light with separate switches. The new switch takes up more room than the standard switch and I will need to pigtail the ground and hot wires. For safety I don’t want to overcrowd the box. I was looking for a white Leviton 6197-W box extender which I used at a past residence. Leviton white is not available on Amazon and the orange big box store as of the review date. Strange since white is a very common color for switches and receptacles. The reason I never gave this Legrand 1594-TPAW a second thought in the past was for lack of photos available other than a single photo showing the front which is useless. The single photo shown on Amazon appears to be the same one shown on the Legrand Pass & Seymour website. The is the same on most other online retailers. I really had to Google to find a photo of the side. I went ahead and rolled the dice and placed my order for the Legrand. I’m posting photos with this review to show why I am happy with the purchase and they may help another Amazon shopper. Overall IMHO the Legrand is better than the Leviton. Now for a couple of technical bits. The Legrand is about one inch deep. The double switch shown in my photos is about one inch deep. For my application I will be able to use just about all of the wall box for wiring without forcing the switch and into the box. The alternative would be to remove the current box, install a deeper box (if it will fit), patch drywall and paint. The box extender comes with long mounting screws (not shown in my photos). The box extender uses a standard sized will plate so if an oversized will plate is needed to hide some imperfections outside of the standard dimensions the Legrand will not do it and you will need to do some cosmetic repairs. Since the Legrand is hard plastic a nylon wall plate or plastic plate will mount just the same and there is no danger of cracking a plastic wall plate such as mounting directly on uneven drywall. Now for the color shade. Most manufacture make their wall plates, receptacles, switches to match. If you mix and match manufactures there is no guarantee the color shade will match exactly. Not easy to tell by my posted photos, but the switch and wall plate is made by Leviton (the color shade matches). The Legrand extender is a slightly brighter shade of white than Leviton. I prefer the Leviton double switch over the Legrand double switch. This is my just personal preference. I confirmed a Legrand switch is the same shade of white as the Legrand box extender.

If you need this, it's a lifesaver

Installing power outlets with usb-c connectors on my kitchen island, and the outlet boxes are super shallow, to clear the drawer slides. These extend out the wall plate to give more clearance for the larger outlets. I had to modify them, trimming off some of the plastic to clear the trim, but it trims easily enough with a sharp box cutter and some patience.

Great for GFCI's

I bought several of these to use in my bus conversion. The thin walls mean low profile handy boxes, and GFCIs don't fit very well in those. These make GFCI mounting possible and they look pretty good as well.

Perfect for Shallow switch boxes when you want a dimmer

I had a shallow switchbox, and no depth allowance to install a deeper one, but I wanted a dimmer switch, which is significantly larger (in depth) than a standard switch. This was the perfect solution! Installed in seconds. I bought two, so I have one as a back-up, but plan on buying a few more just so I have them. My fear was it would look too extended like an exterior outlet that's mounted to the wall, but truly it doesn't. You barely notice the minor extension from the wall surface.

Great Solution for Various Offset Applications

Half of my garage is dry walled and painted. The other half is insulted and covered with OSB for a workshop. I could have offset the entire 4x8 foot sheet of OSB but that would have either been a PIA or structurally unsound after hanging tools and a large shelving unit from it. I had never heard of a product like this but I also hated how the switch was seated 1/2” deep compared to the corner of the wall. There is no independent mounting hardware for this piece. Instead, you take the provided screws and screw in the switch or outlet while mounting this spacer. The spacer matches the wall plate and looks clean. The wall plate does hang over the edge of the product slightly but it’s not a problem and aesthetically it looks pleasing.

this is perfect when to many wires behind a plug

this is really a great product, saved me re-wiring a 3 entry gang box - with GFI plug ( big square backing taking up a lot of room) - its built tuff, extra long screws came with really extended box but sealed it in outdoor location with a SealProof cover. Wow, thank you who ever thought to bring this to market, would of had to re-wire and put large hole which in the location would of been a lot of work. Product is well built, I would use it over and over if had needed more uses for it. thank you

Must have for installing smart switches

If you are replacing an SPDT light switch most likely it will have a shallow box that will not be able to accommodate wiring for the smart switch that needs a neutral wire attached. This extender is the answer, the depth of the extender is 7/8" and comes with 2 1 1/2" long screws

Had a protruding outlet I purchased this and it closed in the box saved me from having to pull panelling and move the electrical outlet box

Smart switches and dimmers don't always fit back in the box. These things slide overtop so you don't have them hanging out of the wall
